Ray Davies - The Deal Lyrics
I'm saying the people in this town have to be locked up, all of 'em
We have to leave and these people have to be locked up
D'ya know what I mean?
I'm going to L.A.
Get myself a tan by the sleepy pool
Meet a pretty girl, walk her down the strip
And chill out in the bar
Then I will rent a car
An open-top Mustang
To cruise around the beach
And I'll check out all the babes
While the sun goes down
By then I will be ready
When I'm emotionally refreshed
Relaxed and confident
I'll hit Rodeo Drive
And drink a cappuccino
And depending how I feel
I'll grab a piece of action
At the Beverly Hills
And get myself a deal
Isn't it wonderful, marvelous
Utterly surreal
Totally fabulous, fraudulent
Bogus and unreal
This is my lucky day
I'll travel to L.A.
And get myself a deal
Today I'm a bullshit millionaire
As good as anyone, better than I was
In dreary Angleterre
Real but disillusioned
Traveling on the tube, riding on the bus
Now I'm full of self-belief
Pretend to be somebody while the credit's good
I will rent a mansion somewhere in Bel Air
Confidence abounding, looking really awesome
Truly debonair
It'll be wonderful, marvelous
Feeling really fake
Feeling so fabulous, fraudulent
A counterfeit on the make
Today I'm gonna get my break
Go to L.A., strike myself a deal
And be part of the American Dream
It'll be wonderful, marvelous (wonderful, marvelous)
Hey Ray, what's the haps?
What's the deal, Ray?
What's the deal?
It's been a while
I haven't seen you for at least a year or more
Or is it less? I can't be sure
But anyway
You must've heard about the troubles that I had
Still I got through, I always manage to
And by the way, how are you?
(Marvelous)
How is your life? How is it goin'?
I still have to sign a contract
People in this town have to be locked up
All of 'em
Hey Ray, what's the deal?
Yeah, what's the deal, Ray?
The deal is...

I am still waiting for the reunion album of the KInks.
I am still waiting for the reunion album of the KInks.
The deal is...
That's got to be the voice of Howard Kaylan from the Turtles/Flo & Eddie talking at the beginning (and end ) of the track. You can even hear what sounds like Mark Volman's voice yelling "Jim!" in the background.
Ray Davies has never lost his gift for lyrics married up to memorable music. OK it's not The Kinks as a band but this is the Kinks voice -- and it's 2018 and it sounds as fresh as the first time we heard him. Ray Davies -- a true rock legend -- singer and songwriter. As important a rock voice as Jagger, Daltry, Presley, Lennon, Dylan, Neil Young, and whoever you can add to it.
What an album he has produced here -- I loved his many solo albums but this is exceptional.
Isn't this song w o n d e r f u l , m a r v e l l o u s ? - Seal the deal .

Nobody does socially observant snark like Davies.
The Master songwriter. Still creating great sing-a-long songs. One of the very few who can still do it.

"Tired of Waiting" and "How Are You" citations here.
Love the callback to "How Are You" from 1986!
Yep, Think Visual was a flop but looking at those tunes now — wow, they are really high quality, not a single miss, wonderful album.
Nah, it was bad. His great 80s track was not released then: Million-Dollar-Semi-Detached.
It was intended for UK Jive album, which really was just bland. That track would have made it much much better. As for Think Visual album, well, just gave it another spin. The only tracked I skipped was Welcome To Sleazy Town. The rest grew on me even more.
Сергей Жилкин Жилкин I love both those albums - and "million pound semi."
.. very fresh, cool yet familiar.. hear Lou Reed tones at times .. what a guy ..
top man !
Amazing... the master...
Just about perfect :)
Love him so much.
Beautiful.
Ray Davies at his best.
