Ray Charles - You Are My Sunshine Lyrics

The other night
As I lay sleeping
Whoah, I dreamed I held you
Held you in my arms
Well, but when I woke up this morning
I found out I was mistaken
Do you know that I hung my
I hung my head and cried
Whoah you are my sunshine
(you are my sunshine)
Ohh, my only sunshine
(my only sunshine)
Well, little girl you make me happy sometimes
(you make me happy)
When my skies are grey
(when skies are grey)
Umm, you'll never never never know dear
(you'll never know, dear)
How much I love you
(how much I love you)
Whoa, and I don't want you to take
(don't take my sunshine)
My sunshine away
(shine away)

[Instrumental Interlude]

You told me once, dear,
That you really loved me
And no one else
Could ever come between, yeah
But now you left me and you love another, yeah
And you have shattered, oh yeah
All of my dreams
Whoah you are my sunshine
(you are my sunshine)
Ohh, my only sunshine
(my only sunshine)
Ohh, you make me happy sometimes
(you make me happy)
When my skies are grey
(when skies are grey)
Whoa, you'll never never never know dear
(you'll never know, dear)
How much I love you
(how much I love you)
Whoa, and I don't want you to take
(don't take my sunshine)
Whoa, if you love me
(don't take my sunshine)
Umm-hmm, if you need me
(don't take my sunshine)
Uh-huh if you want me
(don't take my sunshine)
Waaaahh! Listen
(don't take my sunshine)
(don't take my sunshine)
I don't want you to take
(don't take my sunshine)
Waaaahh! Listen
(don't take my sunshine)
(don't take my sunshine)
I don't want you to take
(don't take my sunshine)
Whoah, my sunshine away
(shine away)

I don't recall ever hearing this rendition until last week on I believe it was the 60's Satellite survey on SiriusXM. It's now one of my faves. AWESOME!

I selected this as my Mom and Son dance song when my oldest married; I sang it to him all the time when he was a baby. We smiled every step of the way and got the party started for the reception. The band really got into it too as they had never been asked to do his version and performed it perfectly with their 70s style horn section. It is a treasured memory of dancing the night away.

Found this song in an antique mall on a 45 and it was wore slap out so I had to see what it sounded like. Well worth it to find and look up

  5. T.... B....

To the idiot who said this is a cornball song, I am pretty jaded when it comes to corny songs, but this one has piercingly haunting lyrics. Any song can become a trite, commodified tune for a commercial, but only a great song can go from a twangy hillbilly melody (with earplugs as a necessary accessory) to the rocking rat-pack style of your daddio to a children's choir on stage in a lunchroom of your local elementary, all with equal success. Did the talking heads do a cover? Maybe they went with Stairway to Heaven instead of this corny song.

How can any punk ass bitch thumbs down this song? Must have been deprived of love or something.

in 1962, when I heard this song the first time, I loved everything about it.  At 15 years old, I was a little different than my buddies and classmates..........   I like a lot of different type stuff.  "Water Boy" , one of my all time favorites, and now just seeing the movie!!! Amazing.   The commercial with the sunshine song, is wonderful, although my wife , a few years younger does not remember this song.  For years I could not find this album , and now I can listen to anything at my computer.  At 72, it still is one of my favorites.

    You are my sunshine,
    My only sunshine.
    You make me happy
    When skies are gray.
    You'll never know dear
    How much I love you.
    Please don't take
    My sunshine away.

"You Are My Sunshine" is popularly known as the state song of Louisiana, but the song has a murky history. It was made popular by Jimmie Davis, a country music singer who used it frequently in his campaign for governor of Louisiana, and it has long been claimed that he and his friend and fellow songwriter Charlie Mitchell wrote the song in 1939.

In Georgia, however, the children of mandolin player and songwriter Oliver Hood insist that their father penned the song on the back of a brown paper bag and performed it at a VFW convention in LaGrange, Georgia, in 1933. Hood regularly played with fellow musicians Riley Puckett and Paul Rice, and many people claim to have heard Puckett perform the piece in the early 1930s. There were supposedly more than 20 verses to the song, but the most popular ones are all that remain. After the original, best-known verse, the song continues:

    The other night dear,
    As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
    When I awoke, dear,
    I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried

    I'll always love you
    And make you happy
If you will only say the same
    But if you leave me
    To love another
You'll regret it all some day

    You told me once, dear
    You really loved me
And no one else could come between
    But now you've left me
    And love another
You have shattered all my dreams

Unfortunately, Hood never copyrighted his song, and in 1937 Paul Rice claimed authorship. Rice sold the rights to the song to Charlie Mitchell and Jimmie Davis in late 1939, and Davis recorded the song on February 5, 1940. His version included the lines that catapulted him to the governor's seat and made the song a Louisiana legend, as he sang it at rallies and even performed it on horseback (his horse was aptly named Sunshine):

    Louisiana, my Louisiana
the place where I was borne.
    White fields of cotton
    green fields clover,
    the best fishing
    and long tall corn

The authorship of the piece may always be in dispute, but the song's lyrics are now known by children across the nation -- despite the less-than-sunny picture it paints after the first upbeat verse. "You Are My Sunshine" received renewed attention when it was featured prominently on the popular Grammy Award-winning soundtrack to the 2000 movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? The song is typical of what is now called traditional country music, with its predictable rhyming patterns, a repeating chorus, and a hit-and-miss meter that requires words to be dragged out over several notes

50 years ago we heard good new music on shitty AM radios. Today we hear shitty new music on fantastic sound systems.

    y.... b....

quite the shame, really. I remember istening to zeppelin, Chicago, cream on crappy music-room headphones, record players. but hey, you know what man? it all sounded good. hell, listening to my pop's radio parted in the driveway late at night (10:00), lowest volume. cc rider by the animals would come on. I was instructed by my big brother to run and get him, no matter where/what he was doing. got the system now, but I haven't listened to new music since the late 90's, so i'm stuck in the timewarp. but then there's jazz, a whole new universe to listen to.

    y.... b....

    j.... d....

    alertha franklin

    j.... d....

It is indeed Margie singing. Ray and Aretha were working for two different recording companies at the time...Aretha with Columbia, Ray with ABC-Paramount. No studio would have allowed any intermingling of stars unless both studios got either a cut of profit or future recording arrangements.

    j.... d....

    It's Margie Hendrix.

    j.... d....

LOL! Margie Hendricks! i saw her do it with him in 1963. One of the Raelets!

    j.... d....

There was nothing " common" about Margie Hendrix or her great voice. She died at a young age of 37 or 38. She was a great vocalist in her own right.

    Margie Hendricks
Margie Hendricks had started out in the ‘50s all-girl backup band known as The Cookies, but soon added a magic touch to Ray’s 1960s recordings, counter-pointing Ray’s mischievous baritone with her own evocative, belted voice.

“There’s very little written about Margie Hendricks,” notes King, “which is pretty amazing because she had one of the most unique voices ever in American music. I think in many ways she was Ray’s Muse. He heard in her voice that church-like sound that inspired him to mix his own Blues into it and create something new. When I read the script and remembered her voice, I knew I wanted to play her because there is something very powerful and real about her.”

Margie Hendricks' attraction to Ray, and Ray’s attraction to Margie, had everything to do with the music, says King.

“Their passion for the music is what brought them together and kept them together as long as they were, but they were both reckless people back then, and when she started to drink their relationship burnt out. Yet I think he really loved her—he was a human being like the rest of us, brilliant as he was—and she was an important part of his life.”

Taylor Hackford was impressed with how King brought the role of a woman few really know so richly to life.

My dad has called me Sunshine since the moment I was born. This song is the one he dedicated to me.

Wow how sweet thanks for sharing great to know there are still good guys around Many Blessings to you and your dad

  78. L.... ....

This song was first recorded in 1939 by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell. While Davis and Mitchell are the credited songwriters of "You Are My Sunshine", Davis was never known to actually claim authorship, as he bought the song and rights from Paul Rice and put his own name on it, a practice not uncommon in the pre-World War II music business.

The song is a state song of Louisiana because of Jimmy Davis (a governor of Lousianna) is associated with it.

  88. R.... J....

For all the musicians out there as well as just pure bred music lovers.
This song is probably the best example ever recorded of what happens when
a true musical genius gets his hands on one of the corniest ballads known to man
and filters it through his deep abiding soul. A devout learning experience for
    all who listen.

    R.... J....

@Doug Fontenot always trying to flip things you knew EXACTLY WHAT the comment meant..and u had to write a book trying to downplay the compliment..You know that song was. Nothing until Ray. Charles did it ..

    R.... J....

@1goldbaby the song has a genuine emotion behind it especially rays rendition along with the man in blacks version no need to shit on the song because without it ray wouldn't have made this groovy song

    R.... J....

@Crude Wildfire Like I said Ray and the raelettes MADE this song ..DIDNT shit on anything ,just expressed my opinion..

    R.... J....

@1goldbaby "you know that song was nothing" sounds like the song wasn't jack shit i might've interpreted it the wrong way my bad bro

    R.... J....

This song was definitely SOMETHING before Ray Charles resuscitated it with the gift of life. It's a simple song with several layers of meaning, morphing into a new tune with each novel interpretation.
