Rare Earth - Tobacco Road Lyrics
I was born in a dump
Mother died and my daddy got drunk
He left me here to die or grow
In the middle of tobacco road
And all I had own was hangin' on my back
The lord knows how I loathe
This place called tobacco road
But its home, it's really my home
The only life I've ever known
But the lord, the lord knows I loathe
Tobacco road
I'm gonna leave and get a job
I save my money, get rich I know
Bring it back to tobacco road
I gonna get me some dynamite
Gonna bring me a crane
Got to blow you up, got to tear you down
And start all over again
Well I'll build a town, I'll be proud to show
Keep the name tobacco road
'Cause it's home
The only life I've ever known
I despise you 'cause you filthy
But I love ya, 'cause it's home
Tobacco road
Tobacco road
You dirty and filthy
Tobacco road
Gonna get me some dynamite
Gonna bring me a crane
Got to blow you up, got to tear you down
And start all over again
Tobacco road
Tobacco road
I despise you, I despise you 'cause you filthy
But I love ya, 'cause it's home
Tobacco road

My first concert early 70s
Rare Earth is one of those bad ass bands who never got the total recognition they deserve. Not sure of their whole touring and time history, but damn these guys were awesome with everything they did.
Super album !
Absolutely the best version of Tobacco Road.
I was a big Rare Earth fan back in the day, but I missed this one completely. Really. Good. Shit!
Great organ in the beginning!
Thanks very much🌷
very different, very nice.
Rare Earth ..........I just want to celebrate

great rendition of the classic blues song!

This whole Album is nice.

I grew up in a rusty shack.....Tobacco Road jazz at its best
one of the best...Burden did a nice cover as well
frank christy yeah Frank...still in Germany?
Still have this on a workin 8 track !!!!!!
Another Great Version of this song.....Excellent Musicians.....Great 70's Keyboards, Guitars, Bass, Sax, Drums, Vocals....Good Stuff....
fantastil
One of my all-time favories!
Of all the versions of this song, including the original, the one by Eric Burdon and the War, Lou Raul, et al, this version by RARE EARTH is undoubtedly the best. Lots of Emotional Content, you know what I mean! No other band or artist comes near Peter Rivera. True blues...!! Long live Rare Earth (with Peter Rivera being the lead singer).
Reminds me of the good old hash days
Listen to Peter Rivera's vocals today. Same GREAT voice! Thank God for You Tube!
I have this album, I love it.
I have them all
the best version.
Youse need to listen to Johnny and Edgar Winter's version from their "Together" album...
2017 ? Br's ?
Tobacco Road, get ready, ma, etc. where can I find them in this album?
Great lyrics, fantastic performance I happen to own this album but this song always surprises me. Thanks Psidericko !
It's good!! but Spooky Tooth's cover is the best.
Best version ever
the best version of all time
I was born in a dump
by far the best.. can't get it on itunes...
best white funk band of its era, bar none! got a chance to meet them personally at a NEW YEAR GIG .Sanducky ,Ohio (Cedar point)
just shows u like good music 👍👍👍👍
just shows u like good music 👍👍👍👍
Fantastic!
Some of the Best Guitar and Organ Riffs ever done in this song, and the only version I ever listen to...dragon randy
The only popular version I ever liked. The others that were popular had a feel that never fit the lyrics.....this one sounds like a guy who had it tough while the others sound like dance numbers and you get the feeling the people singing it are all happy and giddy about being born dirt poor!!! Just never made sense that this version wasn't easily the most popular.
Rose Grizzle . . . u are way mature beyond yer age!!!
IIRC Rare Earth were the first white band to be signed up to Tamla Motown records.
RIP: John D. Loudermilk
I love this. I have the vinyl and every song on it is awesome. In Bed is another favorite. I always wondered how the guitar had so much sustain for that era. Great stuff.
Possibly one of the best jams
Best version indeed. Cheers for posting
I just love Rare Earth. This is a great song. Turn it up loud (very loud). Has so much savvy blues.
I JUST LOVE THE WAY THIS IS DONE
This makes me blow undigested chunks out my ass.
see a doctor
Found the tape in my dad's stuff in 80'. Wore it out growing up.
The Rickest Rick
The were NOT the first white band signed to Motown. There were several others before them. The only ones who were hit makers were Rare Earth. They had their own separate label, even though they were a Motown signed act. I used to think they were the first white band signed to Motown too.
the musician work is spot on
I have many versions I love
some very different than this
and all wonderful :)
A band ahead of the time it was....kickbutt
Nah,this group was on time perfect for the Era"
The Animals did a couple of versions., Spooky Tooth did one similar to this.
My best 8 trac
One of my favorite song!
who's singing this song
Pete Rivera
Toto's version was the best but it was taken down a few years ago and I haven't seen it since
YES THE BEST VERSION HANDS DOWN
Is this song about the famous yet now defunct Tobacco Road dive bar back in downtown Miami?
+Jose Schmoe I've been there,when i was working on a cruise ship,1987. I still have the shirt...."The Road is open 'till 5 AM"....Good memories!
+alfio alberelli Yes Tobacco Road, downtown Miami. I first set foot there when I first moved to Miami for my job in 1992. Just happened to chance upon it. Loved it. It was so ..UN Miami at the time. Felt like I was back home sweet Chicago. I remember on Friday nites(?) they used to have a full T bone steak dinner for like $5 bucks after midnite or something like. I met some people there. Like this guy who worked for the Coast Guard catching drug runners. Also on Fri's it wuz a hot spot for happy hour. hot Miami babes there. Tobacco Road - RIP.
Lou Rawls version was my favorite, but this one is not bad.
10,001 ! and rise !!!
I saw them play this live, a few years back in Vegas. Absolutley the best version of this classic I have ever heard!
Saw them in Chicago in the earlt 70's
I was there too.
Damn. Good. Version. of a damn good song!
ESTE TEMA ES DE JOHN D. LOUDERMILK LA ESCRIBIO EN 1960 Y HA SIDO VERSIONADA POR VARIOS GRUPOS Y SOLISTAS DEL MUNDO DEL ROCK PERO PARA MI GUSTO ESTA ES LA MEJOR VERSION DE ESTE TEMA ,GRANDES RARE EARTH.
i bought the vinyl from some old guy a few months ago, I wasn t much into blues before but this one is worth every penny
Fantastic version . Thanks.
Is it weird that I'm 13 year old girl and I listen to the blues and led Zeppelin and stuff like that?
Lisa Darnell 👍🏻
Nope, Not Weird At All! You Must' ve Been A Hippie Chick In Your Previous Life! Rock On!
Actually no it's not wierd, even if your young school friends don't get it. Later you will see, you are more cool for not following the herd.
Never let others make your choices. Standing on your own for your self makes you better and stronger.
No rosegrizzle, I loved it when I was 11 or 12 years old. I'm 61 now. Just means you have good taste in music.
So far this is the best version of this song i have heard. There are a ton of great cover songs out there. Cream do the best Crossroads.Hendrix owns All Along The Watchtower. Both versions of Blinded By The Light are great. Rare Earth seem to capture the mood and spirit of the song the best.
@gerardcornelis Fuckin right they are and i just ordered the 2010 remaster of Get Ready/Ecology on one cd. Their two best albums. I wish they didnt cut the song Nice Place To Visit from the cd.
+Rocky B Edgar Winter's version is pretty good ,too....
+Rocky B, not bad, Listen to Lou Rawls version and tell me what you think.
Divad Rrek Eric Burton and War's version is nothing that sneeze at either.
Absolutely...
great *
eat version of a great old tune!
+Space Lord de acuerdo,muy perceptivo...
yannis place paleochora crete
Triple awesome !
tgis is the better verison of Tobacco road with another of Edgar Winter.
Back When They Made Good Music...
Great sound :)
laserman8359 & MetalBere : Rare Earth weren't the only, nor first, White act on Motown.. They were the most successful White band with Berry Gordy. For The Record : The first White group on Motown were The Valadiers. Other White artistes of renown have shared the spotlight with Rare Earth on Motown. The most notable are : Stoney & Meatloaf (Yes, THAT Meatloaf whose 'Bat Out Of Hell' earned him a ton of bread in the late 1970's), Charlene, The Lost Nation, Fresh, Kathe Green, Puzzle (Motown's answer to CBS's Chicago), Paul Petersen (From The Donna Reed Show), Severin Browne (Jackson Browne's brother), Tommy Good, Bobby Darin (Who served with Motown when he died in 1973), Soupy Sales, The Friendly Enemies, and R. Dean Taylor
Try The Rustix!
@Louis Ricigliano The Rustix put out 2 STELLAR albums & a few singles (also STELLAR) when on Motown
Don't forget Kiki Dee
Love it.
