Randy Travis - A Horse Called Music Lyrics

High on a mountain in western Montana
A silhouette moves 'cross a cinnamon sky
Riding alone on a horse he called Music
With a song on his lips, and a tear in his eye

He dreams of a time, and a lady that loved him
And how he would sing her sweet lullabies
But we don't ever ask him
And he never talks about her
Guess it is better to just let it slide

But sang "ooh" to the ladies
And ooh, he made some sigh
Now he rides away on a horse he called Music
With a pain in his heart and a tear in his eye

He rode the Music from Boston to Bozeman
For not too much money, but way to much ride
But those were the days when a horse he called Music
Could jump through the moon and sail across the sky

Now all that's left is a time-old worn cowboy
With nothin' more than the sweet by-and-by
And trailing behind, is a horse with no rider
A horse he calls memories that she used to ride

And he sang "ooh" to the ladies
And ooh, he damn near made some fall right down and die
Now he rides away on a horse he called Music
With a pain in his heart and a tear in his eye

High on a mountain in western Montana
Two crosses cut, through a cinnamon sky
Marking the place where a horse he called Music
Lays with a cowboy in the sweet by-and-by...

To me, maybe not to anyone else, but Randy Travis has the voice that is the most genuist and pure sound for someone singing country music. There's artists out there who seem to have to try to sound "country" and add that twang but it sounds fake, insincere and frankly, anyone can put a spin on their voice to sound like something else but you can tell it's contrived. With Randy, that voice was born to sing and not only sing the songs but you believe wholeheartedly that he's telling you his personal stories but just sings 'em and it's effortless. You don't see him straining his mouth or face to sing in his natural voice. I've heard many country/western singers (past and present) but no one can even touch what Randy Travis has naturally and was born with. No one tops him in my book. He's the best for me and the one who's 100% pure believable quality. That's it.

Most of todays supposed country acts wouldn't have a career.Or sell a single record, if they didn't have autotunes for producers to alter and clean up their vocals. Randy's friend and long time producer Kyle Lehning, once commented that he always recorded Randy's voice in an analog settin. So that they captured the pure, genuine , quality and fiber of his voice.

One of the things that always touched me about Randy's voice, is the believability and warmth, that comes through as he sings a lyrics. That ability comes through so starkly in this type of song.

I also have Willies album with that song title. Though I liked it, Willie always had a nasally sound to his voice imo. Randy's is as smooth as a good shot of Jack Daniels. There is no other like him. No one will ever fill his shoes.

I heard Willie's version first as a kid about 30 years ago. I was looking for nostalgia and I came across my favorite country singer of all. I had no idea that Randy had covered this as well. Damn good old school country. Does anyone remember Randy's role as a juror in ”Runaway Jury?” It was raw and perfect!

@GailChasin I didn't know Randy lived next to Wayne at that time. Hi Gail. I read your post, smiled, and said I know her. Hope things are well. Dee Provance

  68. D.... P....

Wayne Carson wrote this. When I was a kid he would sing songs to Cristian and I that were even better. The last one I remember was A Horse called music. He wanted Willie to name his next album this. If you ever saw him play guitar and sing to you in a living room you would swear this is the greatest singer songwriter that I have ever seen

  69. J.... P....

How could you dislike this how?

  70. s.... ....

One thing on my bucket list is to get a chance to hang out with Randy for a few minutes. doubtful that it'll happen, but is on my list if given the opportunity.

  73. t.... ....

What an awesome song and I'm going to dare to say that Randy Travis does it the best. Wonderfully done.

  74. v.... ....

I saw him play this song in a casino in late summer. It was so beautiful. Reminded me of my younger years when I used rope and ride and chase around them steers in Texas.

  75. L.... ....

Takes me back to late this summer when i seen him in concert with some of my closest friends. We must of had 12-pack for each of us during the concert. There was beer bottles all over hell under our seats. We were sitting front row and it was like he was giving us a concert in my living room. Man that was a good time. Afterwards we met Randy's band at a bar and started to throw them back with them. Colorado Kool-Aid never tasted so good. The bar band played and I danced with every lady.

  76. c.... ....

He is one in a million...

  77. j.... ....

God I love his voice, and he's so polite. <3

  81. n.... ....

    a great man and singer

  82. m.... ....

    Love you dude!

  83. t.... ....

I loved this song the first time I heard it on his album, You and You Alone. I finally saw it in concert and almost cried, he did it so wonderfully. Thanks for putting this up, it lets others see the great work that isn't always known to everyone!

  84. b.... ....

his smile remindes me of the joker

  85. T.... ....

Randy Travis is good, but I think Willie's performance has the edge. Honestly, though, I think our favorite cover is the version of the song as we first heard it. Regardless.
    Imagine Willie singin' Surfin USA.
    See my point?
Even the Beach Boys couldn't play their own song as good as it first came out.
I think that rule applies to every artist.
Reasons are.. recordings are carefully controlled and first impressions are lasting.

  86. r.... ....

Awesome this should have been played far and wide
