Randy Newman - Marie Lyrics
You looked like a princess the night we met
With your hair piled up high
I will never forget
I'm drunk right now baby
But I've got to be
What you meant to me
I loved you the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie
I loved you the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie
You're the song that the trees sing when the wind blows
You're a flower, you're a river, you're a rainbow
Sometimes I'm crazy
And I'm weak and I'm lazy
And I've hurt you so
And I don't listen to a word you say
When you're in trouble I just turn away
But I love you and I loved you the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie
I loved you the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie

Jesus, what a beautiful, beautiful song. Whenever I hear this song, the tears just flow.
I always read this song like this:
The guy can only tell her he loves her when he's drunk. Meaning he doesn't really love her. Its just convenient for him sometimes, when inebriated. Normally he's a weak and lazy man who really can't and doesn't want to commit to the girl. But when he's drunk he's prepared to declare himself, feel sentimental, yet he really is a sort of prick with a girl who maybe wanted him but really just can't trust him at all.
I don't know why, but I just had this in my mind. And listening to it now after many years, it makes me feel the emotions again of the first time I heard this in 1974. So much has gone by, so many family & friends who have left this plane of existence and the emotions are held so dearly in song.
Uno dei più grandi compositori del mondo pochi lo sanno
Genius.
Revisionist history brought me here :)

Anybody here from Revisionist History?
Yesss!!
An apex of popular music.
An amazing song writer

"I don't even like loves songs." Said as tears streak down my face.
I'm young, but this really speaks to me. I really loved a girl named Maddie and long story short, this song. I always will love her.
I loved you the minute I heard this song, Randy!
I love you alana maree our good night song
One of the most beautiful love songs ever. My personal favorite!
I would have loved hearing Willie Nelson or Ray Charles sing this song. It is my all time favorite
Paulie sent me .🥰
Randy is 75 today-the ladies in the south had a saying;the higher the hair, the closer to God.
I'm changing my name to "Marie."
I remember when Paul Simon was on SNL he did this song and said he was jealous, that he wished he'd wrote it.. high praise to Randy
I always liked Good Old Boys - every song on it. But now, after all the years of love won and love lost, I can appreciate Marie. It makes me weep for the ones I've hurt. Randy Newman is sheer brilliant genius for how he can see into our hearts and pull it out for all to see and appreciate.
I love that number so much
Christine van der Wilden nob t
i can never hear this without crying. damn u newman. <3
Randy is famous not only because of his compositions but he made the
arrangements himself. And on this wonderful masterpiece you can hear
what words and arrangements mean. I love Randy for that.
A perfect song about imperfect love
My favorite. My husband Tom, sang it to me all the time. I miss him so now, he's in Heaven. ❤️😔
I wonder why...
Kewpiemom he still sings it to you. Late at night have a listen, I bet he is there. X

I love this song for a long time, it's so great. This music arrangements and sensible words. And the text is often so true. Love you Randy, you still are great.
Love Joe Cocker's version too
in case anyone wants to try another voice singing this beautiful song, with less orchestration and more voice, Try Curtis Stigers' version !
@Wim D. Love the orchestration.
Of course this is one of my favorites. First of all, it's a pretty and emotional, whimsical little love song, and second, Marie is my first name :)
Golly almighty, what a song. Lyric poetry, lush string section, piano arrangement and Randy's earnest voice -- all to the poignant tempo of a slow waltz. Chokes me up for being so beautiful and for surviving so sweetly over the years.
I believe with all my heart that the man singing this song loves a woman.
This is such a emotionally raw love song, just beautiful.
full confession. I basically can't listen to this without bursting into tears. Or, really even thinking about it without bursting into tears. The sense of remorse is just so intense.

Just goes to show you that even us rotten selfish bastards aren't immune to love even though we pretty much fail at returning it.
I could write a book...
I'm feeling the same way right now buddy. Like WTH happened?!?! Oh what could've been with my girl...😔😣
Agreed. It's a very powerful song and has great meaning to me.
The best album ever for me
and nothing compares with it
I wish I could go back and revisit that time when I was beautiful and never acknowledged it.Thru away
all that love...remember that young one's.I thought my intellect was all that was needed.
"Good old boys", the best album ever!
It's one of my favorites.
OMG, this has got to be one of the most GENUINE love songs ever!
Some folks might think its narrator is an alcoholic spouse abuser.
But after listening to it a thousand times, I think it's sung by a man
who is exactly what he says he is: weak, a little crazy, lazy and a
poor listener...and then some. Nothing here to indicate he
is an alcoholic; LOTS of folks cannot bring themselves to really
speak from their heart when they're sober. Nor that he actually beats
his wife. There are many more ways that you can hurt the person you love
than merely beating on them...and many of those ways are far worse.
What he's trying to say is that he is fully aware of ALL his faults and
knows that his beautiful wife deserves better. But despite how
it may appear at times, he genuinely loves her with ALL his heart...
and he knows that she feels the same way. It reminds me of a great
Robert Smith line in the Cure song "Love Song":
"However far away, I will always love you
However long I stay, I will always love you
Whatever words I say, I will always love you
I will ALWAYS love you."
If this isn't a REAL love song, then damned if I know what a love
song really sounds like. :')
I disagree with your opinion somewhat. I do think the narrator in the song is entirely genuine. However, even though he "loves her" - his love is ultimately worthless, which is what makes the song so painful, as many people have experienced a similar kind of worthless love.
Yep, you nail it. Newman's songs are never one dimensional and this one has that 'double bottom' too.
Aren't we all like the narrator some of the time towards those we love? I don't know about you,but I'm not perfect.
We all agree that it is a real love song . Simplicity!
Love has no pride.
A beautiful song by a really underrated artist.
yo this dude has three emmys, six grammys, and 20 oscar nominations
Still not enough.
Who underrates him? Only the musically ignorant...
Not underrated by me, but what the hell would I know?
simply a stunning song.....
A Classic Randy Newman Formula- a beautiful song about a terrible subject. This time, it's a Love song from an alcoholic spouse abuser....listen to it again...
@Terry Corcoran Yes! I can only assume the people who call this 'a beautiful love song' have never really listened to Randy Newman, king of irony. I suppose they must think that he really does hate Short People.
+roscoe jones I keep getting the notion that Marie is dead, don't ask me why, just stuck in there somewhere.
+Nithingr
His job is to write em.
Your job is finding a meaning to em that works for ya.
This just might be the most perfect song ever in the history of music.
I always loved Randy Newman. "Marie" is such a beautiful song
