Randy Newman - I Think It's Going To Rain Today Lyrics

Broken windows and empty hallways
A pale dead moon in the sky streaked with gray
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it's going to rain today

Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles
With frozen smiles to chase love away
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it's going to rain today

Lonely, lonely
Tin can at my feet
Think I'll kick it down the street
That's the way to treat a friend

Bright before me the signs implore me
To help the needy and show them the way
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it's going to rain today

Randy Newman I Think It's Going To Rain Today Comments

Mr Mercedes Season 2 episode 1. Thanks to that show for offering options, since I would not normally gravitate towards this genre. Didn't know that I would like it until I heard this.
Also it's timeless. It doesn't sound like it's from the late 60s. When I think of that era, I'm expected to hear Motown, The Beatles or The Stones 👍

  2. W.... S....

    Is een muzikale man, professioneel

Randy has always been one of my favorite lyricists. ER brought me here again to listen. Viet Vet Jolly Greens ARRS 37th and 40th '67 - '68.

This is so beautiful. I had to listen more than once and I still have the feeling of wanting more.

  13. R.... C....

I completely fell in love with this song a few months back, and it bothers me so much that in every cover version (even the ones by the late great Nina Simone) they miss that beautiful "overflowing - going"- rhyme, by making it "gonna rain" instead of pronouncing the entire word. It may seem like a minor complaint to some, but to me that rhyme right there elevates the song, and makes the title line stand out and sound so damn profound. Goose bumps every time. Anyway, fantastic tune

  14. M.... ....

Churchy piano and trenchant lyrics. Bravo!

  15. G.... ....

I was in a really happy mood, then I listened to this. Anybody got any spare razor blades?

  24. R.... W....

Magic track. God bless you Randy Newman. Forget Buzzlightyear!

  25. T.... A....

from a 16 year old French guy, I think this is the most beautiful song I ever hear

  26. H.... Y....

Hi. I'm Harlan Case Yarin, and I'm 13 years old. Here's a funny story. One day, my mom and I were driving my grandma back to her home in Maryland, and we stayed there a little while. I bought the Randy Newman "Greatest Hits" CD. We listened to this song, on the way there in the car. At first it was cloudy. Then it rained, before too long! I guess if you listen to this song it literally rains!

  27. H.... t....

For my dead brother, I am pissed off Andy.
    You cunt.

  28. J.... T....

Randy Newman might just be one of the musicians of the past few decades who has been most misquoted. Joe Cocker made a very good Job of "Leave your hat on", but it's not his, for example. There's worse though. Many times I've seen "Sweet home Chicago" attributed to the Blues Brothers. Shit, Robert Johnson recorded that in 1928 and well before him we have "Sweet home Kokomo". Much music has been attributedto the first who recorded it, but do we really know how old, for example, the Saint Louis Blues is?

  29. J.... T....

Holey horse... Since when has human kindness been overflowing? When you see all this refusal of immigration, one wonders...
I've been living in France for nearly 33 years but am an immigrant as I'm of dutch birth and raising. I've grown up with about a quarter of our primary school classes consisting of "immigrants", mostly from Surinam and Indonesia. Heritage from our colonial past and one hell of a way to learn things different from what we were used to...

    J.... T....

Human kindness most regularly appears on a person to person level

    J.... T....

Quite true, considering another person is firstly and foremostly as being "not like us" rather hampers the proceedings. Time to realise that all our forebears were most likely black, including those (Homo erectus) of our eurasian co-ancestor Neandertal and certainly the most ancient british inhabitant whose DNA has so far been decoded, the famous Cheddar Man, also called "Britain's blue-eyed boy".

  30. s.... m....

This guy has written so many beautiful melodies, a true American treasure.

  31. l.... a....

Great track by a great artist. UB40 really did this song justice they recorded it at time when It seemed some how appropriate for the time.

  32. K.... R....

    President Kirkman brought me here

  33. G.... G....

Thank you for reminding me of the sweet sadness of life.

  34. J.... T....

This. It hurts my heart. And, yeah, other singers sing it. Newman embodies it. Oh, that sad voice. it always hurts my heart.

  35. L.... D....

    The Christian song of songs

    L.... D....

Maybe you mean religious? I think Randy was born Jewish...

  36. A.... R....

This is very very nice... However I know this song from UB40's amazing debut album and their version is kind of how I know this song...

  37. W.... J....

    Man apart goed muziek ******

  38. K.... ....

Is that not always the case that the original must always be the best as that is what the songwriter intended. A gloss production by a top artist more often than not loses the sincerity of an original appeal. Randy Newman and Jimmy Webb are two cases in point.

    K.... ....

True, as when we've hosted Jimmy Webb at our concert series (3 times!), I ALWAYS loved and appreciated HIS OWN versions of HIS songs MUCH MUCH better than Glen Campbell's covers.
ESPECIALLY his own reading of his own "Galveston", as his slowed down version is MUCH more 'soulful', and captured the psyche of that soldier he was singing about much more emotionally than Glen's speedier, 'bouncier' version did . ;) )

  39. W.... S....

    Goed muziek top

  40. P.... S....

I love the Manning especially the verse that says scarecrows dressed in the latest style Frozen smiles to chase them away people can dress up all they want but in reality there's no hiding there true self's

  41. a.... a....

Esta buena canción la compuso RANDY NEWMAN quien la canto y la publico en el año 1968

  46. G.... E....

This song will forever be a part of the soundtrack to my life. It is perfection.

  47. M.... M....

What's with all the deleted videos? Censorship??? The fuck you song?????

  48. M.... M....

Was it a Randy Newman song where each verse or chorus
ended with "fuck you"? What was that??? Anybody know?

  49. P.... M....

"Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles
With frozen smiles to chase love away
    Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it's going to rain today"

This make me think of "Cottaging".

  50. J.... D....

Randy's rendition close second to Nina Simone

    J.... D....

I only disagree because I'm pretty sure that Ms. Simone would, as well.

  57. M.... K....

What does "I think it's gonna rain today" means?

    M.... K....

Michael Kylow "human kindness" is overflowing, and I think it's going to rain today. The heavens cry and wash it all away.

    M.... K....

Angelsfury, I think it is OVER FLOWING, not OVERFLOWING; nevertheless, what he is trying to say with it is going to rain today. Do you know if he ever explained this lyrics? I wish I knew its meaning.

    M.... K....

@Michael Kylow figure it out for yourself. Come up with your own meaning ... geez

  58. e.... ....

Anyone else remember this song from We Bought A Zoo?

  59. E.... B....

This is one of the very few songs that can bring me close to tears. I'm just an old fart who has been around longer than most of you kids. And I've seen things I never wanted to see and have memories of the 60s I don't want to recall. THIS is how I felt then. And, with our country today, it's how I'm starting to feel again.

    E.... B....

    Yes...yes.

    E.... B....

I agree! He makes me cry.

    E.... B....

From one old timer to another thanks Ed. We were proud to serve.

  62. V.... H....

I loved this song before but I mean... Broken... anyone?

    V.... H....

    I know same

    V.... H....

Broken version is by Nina Simone x

    V.... H....

Debbie Stickles no it's not I just found it it's by a man called Ray Davis, look it up for the full song.

    V.... H....

The Song 'Broken' at the end of the show is by Ray Davis but the cover of this Randy Newman song is by Nina Simone

    V.... H....

ignorantpom I figured this out a few days ago but never got around to changing my comment but still thanks for the correction for someone else's sake rather than my own.

  63. J.... B....

it's so freaking sad that I could swim on my own tears

  64. D.... P....

This song pulls feelings and frustration out of me every time I listen to it, powerful stuff. Reminds me of a great Bukowski quote: "We're all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn't. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing."

    D.... P....

Love is not driven by death. How cheap

  65. P.... B....

Could do without the nutty zooms.

  66. c.... b....

With what's happening in the USA these days, all should listen to these words. Compassion is being lost in REAL LIFE.(3-18-17)as our gov't seems to not remember or worse not care~

    c.... b....

    ...human kindness is over-flowing...

    c.... b....

What are you talking about? How did you manage to get your politics into this song? Can't it just be about feelings?

    c.... b....

worry about your 3rd world shit hole creep! The usa is just fine! The freaks have been told it's not there's to destroy!

  67. C.... ....

"Human kindness is overflowing . . ."  Hold that thought, for the rest of your life.

    C.... ....

Clamchucker i do not suppose this is meant as an encouragement. Randy Newman is being sarcastic, to be clear

  68. J.... S....

I enjoy Newman, Waits and Marin Mull

  69. W.... S....

    goed he

  70. W.... S....

    goed he

  71. S.... G....

One of the most beautiful songs I've heard in recent years.

  72. C.... ....

The most played of all his songs - for good reason.

  73. B.... M....

Thank you ,Nothing beats a sad old song to lift my spirits and Randy does it so good.

  74. j.... ....

My best friends Dad lost his wife to cancer when we were 13 at school. His Dad used to play this song and i never really understood it till i became a man. Truly beautiful song.

  76. T.... T....

    the perfect song

  77. .... ....

  78. P.... F....

    P.... F....

This song definitely made one of the better Wonder Years moments for me.

    P.... F....

    Holy poop! Holy, holy poop!

  79. S.... B....

I heard this on the three episode series of childhoods end and right when it started I went onto Google and found it. I was really shocked at how much emotion was in it not only sadness but a feeling of relief that the rain might wash the sadness away. it truly is a great song and when I found out that it was Randy Newman I was thinking wait isn't that the guy that south park was bashing during the honey booboo episode. they have clearly never heard this song this great song

    S.... B....

South Park takes the mick for fun, doesnt mean they dont know how good Randy Newman is.

  80. .... S....

"we bought a zoo" brought me here...great film!

  81. T.... P....

This is why I defend guys like Kristofferson and Mr. Newman. You don't need to have a " golden throat" to be a great singer. Like a Kris, Randy sings from and about the heart, and it always works. Cash turned "Sunday Morning COMING Down" into a hit but like this song, Kris's version is an emotional powerhouse. Midler, Streisand, and others do great versions of this but they are almost too perfect, and emotion is never perfect.

    T.... P....

I feel that Joni Mitchell did good by the spirit of Randys song, she not being one for conventional performance.

    T.... P....

Nina Simone is the only other person who I feel equals Newman on this song.

    T.... P....

You are absolutely right... and i dare say that maybe her version is better...

    T.... P....

I'm seriously tempted to agree lol

    T.... P....

You're right Mr. T. I've heard really good voices wasted on lousy singing.
like a Stradivarius in a 4 year old's hands........ but give Eric Clapton a 20 dollar junk guitar...and sit back in wonder!

  82. H.... R....

childhood's end makes you unforgettable Sir Randy Newman

  83. J.... J....

    Childhood's End brought me here!

    J.... J....

    "Childhood''s End" was a miniseries.

    J.... J....

    +PunguinYoga yes. drunk yet?

    J.... J....

Never drink. Grew up around an alcoholic, Intoxication doesn't interest me a bit.

    J.... J....

Childhood's End is a 1953 science fiction novel by the British author Arthur C. Clarke. The story follows the peaceful alien invasion[1] of Earth by the mysterious Overlords, whose arrival begins decades of apparent utopia under indirect alien rule, at the cost of human identity and culture, - Wikipedia.

  84. M.... R....

This is the definitive version. Some of the covers are good but the original will always be the best.

  85. S.... ....

If TCM hasn't yet picked this song for their "end of year list of people we've lost" shorts, then they're missing a bet.

  86. C.... J....

    childhoods end and beaches!

  87. R.... T....

dusty springfield does a killer version.

  88. N.... L....

Heard this song on the soundtrack of "Scandle" last night!

  89. j.... s....

I'm disappointed the piano drops out after the first verse.  The song begins as if I were just listening to Randy doodle on the keys and finding words to go along with the notes.Sitting in a room while he put together pieces of songs and lyrics would be fantastic.

    j.... s....

    john shugrue that's the beauty.

  90. M.... H....

I know Bette Midler, Judy Collins, and (more recent) Norah Jones do this song justice, but there's something about Newman doing it.  Yes, yes, yes - I know he wrote the song.  But the way he does it breaks me.  It's the voice of man who fights with loneliness, a creeping sadness he can never truly shake off but dares not sing too loud lest anyone else find out his secret.  Heartbreaking.

    M.... H....

    Beautifully said!

    M.... H....

Neil Diamond does a very good interpretation of this song...

    M.... H....

    Nina Simone version :)

    M.... H....

I think the NINA SIMONE version is stunning.

    M.... H....

Newman always spoke the truth in the most lyrical and poetic of ways with lots of sarcasm sprinkles on top. A genius and a real mensch.

  91. B.... M....

This man sings about the human experience. How much can you get into a song?

  92. L.... M....

Tom Odell did a great job singing this song !

    L.... M....

    I absolutely agree! :D

    L.... M....

    Yes, I love his version!

    L.... M....

    Lian Maqousi Joe Cocker

  93. S.... G....

I first heard this song sung by Judy Collins, who did a great job, but nobody else sounds anything like Randy Newman, and he did write it. He's definitely underappreciated in popular culture, but that's probably why I have little interest in popular culture.

    S.... G....

    +Steve Goldfield And justifiably so.

  94. D.... ....

Wow, so pieceful comment section :)

  95. R.... C....

First heard this song in Vietnam.  I had written to Randy for an autographed photograph.  It came back quickly from Los Angeles with a couple of nice signed 8x10's, a letter and the the album this song was on - and I played is right away.  I got it onto AFVN (Armed Forces Vietnam Radio).  It really made people thinkabout what he is saying.  And, the string arrangement is just awesome.  The song is GREAT !!!

    R.... C....

@Kianu Collis You have been reported, sir. I hope this comment comes down, and with it, your account.

    R.... C....

@Kianu Collis Oh shut up, Kianu Collis

    R.... C....

Aw, what a beautiful experience. Thanks for sharing 💚

    R.... C....

Roger C. Thank you for your service sir! I wish I could shake your hand face to face and tell you how much it means to us that you gave the ultimate sacrifice. Some people are idiots and have no respect for soldiers but I do.

My grandfather was in Vietnam as well. Once he was in New York, in his uniform and a hippie man ran up and spit in his face. My grandfather smashed him in the mouth for it. Just then another man came running up, my grandfather thought he was gonna have a fight on his hands. Instead the man shook my grandfather's hand, told him he was actually coming over to kick the man's ass for treating my grandfather like that, but told him it looks like he had it covered haha. He told him thank you for his service.

My grandfather's passed now, but I'll never forget him telling me about that. And all always have an appreciation for those who risk it all so that we can have an easy life here. God bless you sir!

    R.... C....

Kianu Collis I know you're not reading replies because, well, you're a troll... But (while there were terrible atrocities in Vietnam, and while I think we all pray for peace in our time) I do want to point out that the draft didn't end until the 1970's... So in fact, contrary to the end of your inflammatory paragraph, no. He could not have just "said no".
No soldier wanted to be in Vietnam, just as no soldier wants to overseas today. They want what we all want: to be home with family and loved ones. I hate war, but soldiers die so that the rest of us can be home with our loved ones, so put your admirably passionate tongue back in your ignorant mouth and exercise your right to remain silent.

  96. E.... ....

i am here for the wonder years!

  97. a.... l....

yes, nothing like the original. 1st time I heard this song it was on a Neil Diamond record. Neil always does some lovely orchestration but he didn't stray much from the original,,and that says something. Nice song Mr. Newman.

  98. S.... G....

Gorgeous song. Love Randy singing his own beautiful song. Dusty Springfield also did a chilling, beautiful cover.
