Rainbow - Black Sheep Of The Family Lyrics

I've got nothing in my head
Got a floor for a bed
The future's at the bottom of a tea cup

I got a half a pair of shoes
And no time to lose
I'm wondering when I'm going to wise up

So, fortune shine your light on me and my clothes
Cause we need some security
You get a little bad luck
And it grows and it grows
I'm the black sheep of the family

I've got half a pound of rice
A beard full of lice
A mission called retrogression

I've got pocket full of dust
And eating is a must
You want to make a good impression

So, fortune shine your light on me and my dog
Cause we need some security
While all the folks are living high up the hill
I'm the black sheep of the family

Don't talk to me about society
You got to pay the rules
Or pay the penalty

Because there's nothing to choose
Between a handful of blues
Double indemnity

The hour was wrong
And my shadow's getting long
My real life's a song, don't need much
But I've got an ache in my head
I wanna go to bed
Tomorrow I don't have to wake up, no

So wisdom shine your light on me and my knees
Cause it's true what they say about familiarity
There's nothing good this way
And it's true they say
I'm the black sheep of the family

Oh, my wisdom shine your light on me and my knees
It's true what they say about familiarity
There's nothing good this way
And it's true they say
I'm the black sheep of the family
Yeah, yeah

I'm the black sheep of the family
Just me and my dog, yeah, yeah
I'm the black sheep of the family
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'm the black sheep of the family
You've got me on my knees
I'm the black sheep of the family
Yeah, yeah, yeah

  3. Paulo Valentini

This song is biggest part of me . Perfect album! The best work of Ritchie Blackmore.

  4. Adrian Cooke

Not far from where I live there is a field which for some reason has a flock of black sheep in it and every time I see them I am reminded of this song lol

  5. GreenerHill

Have only just noticed that some of the verse melody went into Tarot Woman a year later. "(I got) nothin' in my head, Straw for a bed, Future at the bottom of a teacup..." and "Something in the air tells me to beware - my, my, my..." are very alike. Just goes to show that even a genius like Dio has influences.

  6. Adrian Cooke

This is an underrated album and one of my favourites

    Troy Evitt

It's really Blackmore stepping into Elf. The guitarist wasn't just unceremoniously sacked, there was a few quid in it for him. He retired four hours from my home in South Carolina, US.

  7. Garett Bauer

Why is the tone off? Sounds a tad slowed down.

  8. Rik Nel

    Thee real Rainbow.

  9. Μανωλης Φιολακης

    Defendly my song!

  10. Jim Sullivan

I love Ritchie Blackmore he is a superior super Sensational phenomenal of the Fender Stratocaster and when he hooked up with Ronnie James Dio they wowed all of their Witnesses

  11. Bryan Allison

Damn what a hidden gem! No live tracks or covers anywhere 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Kevin Renforth

This is a cover version of a Quatermass song.

    Grilledcheesus 83

@Kevin Renforth and a new cover just came out

  12. The Lady In Red

Alright... I'm the black sheep of the family... but I can live with it!!

  13. Katie White

Even at a young I knew i was different from the others still won't expect me as i am but yet my mom still makes exuses

    Janet Bass

Different how? I.'ll bet you are wonderful though-look what YouTube video/band you are commenting under too. 🎈💕

    Thomass Blaquelourde

When I was 18 months old my parents took me to Baptist church. When the sermon began, I stood up on the pew and began yelling "BAH-BA BLACK SHEEP " wouldn't stop and to be taken to the car

  14. THE CLARENCES

    Love this song!
    xoxo The Clarences

  15. B T

This version has nothing over the Quatermass version!

  16. M Grmn

    wrong pitch/tone. go away.

  17. Steve Bogna

Those lyrics have so many errors it's a joke

    fred kyle

YOUR RIGHT SOUNDED GOOD BACK IN THE DAY BUT I WAS HIGH ALL THE TIME THANK GOD I WOKE UP NOW I'M PART OF MY FAMILY AGAIN ONLY TOOK 30 YEARS WHAT A WAST OF YOUTH

  18. Floyd Spencer

The Quatermass version is much better. Particularly the bass and the vocals - so very superior.

    Graham Franklin

The original version of this song was by The Hill featuring Chris Farlowe and is pretty good if you like this version check out Chris singing it is quite different

    Gunvald M Killi

    Yes,i agree,it`s way better!

  19. Walter Evans

ABSOLUTE HOOT OF A RENDITION.......BLOWS THE ORIGINAL QUATERMASS VERSION OFF THE EARTH..........LOVE THE WAY RONNIE'S VOICE GOES WITH BLACKMORES SHEER COMIC BOTTLENECK PLAYING............'Don't talk to me about society'....When I escaped from this awful SOCIOLOGY A LEVEL COURSE as a teen...I went back to this FE (Fuck All) College with a GUITAR in my hand singing 'DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT SOCIETY' !!!!!! With this tune coming out of my hands , guitar & portable Amplifier.........That fucking place got DEMOLISHED to make way for a bloody car park with all the fuckwit conformists with it.........BUT I'M STILL HERE !!!!........Lololololol

    Walter Evans

And I'm STILL the BLACK SHEEP OF THE FAMILY......lol.....Anyway I digress.....'Tomorrow I don't have to wake up'........God bless Ronnie and Mr. Blackmore

    Walter Evans

Listen to the melody counterpoints of bassist CRAIG GRUBER'S playing.......That guy had it down.....DAMN good Bass player.

  20. stefano tracanelli

    Very good version, great Ronnie

  21. Aden Sudrajat

best vocalist EVER, how could he sing so powerfull but still comfort to my ear..magnificient.

    Greatkingrat88

He's my second favourite after Freddie Mercury, Dio was just an amazing singer.

    Arghya Chatterjee

    Feel you bruh

  22. Mbrode041795

Come Taste the Band.  A brilliant recollection.  I believe that was Coverdale? Bolin's TEASER was also beast.

Pure PURPLE still hard to surpass.  RB a guitar freak. Classic stuff like Truckin, Highway, Hush, etc of course....but my 2 faves are Rat Bat Blue and Knockin at Your Back Door and ALL of Burn,  :-)

    Lay Down, Stay Down.

  23. ronnie yo

don't blame DP for not wanting to record this. This retro late 60's. when i recently read an interview of Blackmore dissing SRV and Hendrix I lost all respect for him as a musician. what an ass!

    Andy R

He gave Hendrix praise in things I've seen...Where's that reference from? There never was a contest? There was 'many great guitarists back then'...We as fans can have our 'favorites' however...It never was/is about pitting 1 guitar player against another.I have seen Blackmore say some things about 'guitarists' in general by saying he was much better than most but he never singled anyone out that he was 'better',at least I've never seen such...

    Andy R

'Accomplished' has several synonyms which could fall under what Blackmore said...I'd bet it wasnt in the form of an insult...

    Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow 1977

ronnie yo lol Hendrix and srv are 2 little fellas compared to Ritchie.

    metal warrior

Neuro Demonio Rainbow Rising is better than any Deep Purple album!!

    MrYobo0

RB loved Hendrix with Experience. He hated what he was doing when he was Band of Gypsies. He said that by that time drugs were taking over his talent.

  24. JON MILLER

Ritchie wanted to record this song with Deep Purple, but they wouldn't do it,so he asked Ronnie to help-just as a side project. He was so pleased with it,and the B side-Sixteenth century Greensleeves-he decided to record a whole album-And Rainbow was born.

    Clive Bindley

Actually..Jon Miller was correct regarding this particular song.
Purple weren't interested because it was not a Purple original and they didn't want to record a cover.

    Idrol

Clive Bindley is it cover? I didnt know

    Greg Tudor

DP didn't want to record a cover?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyEOYJDjGGM

    apollomemories73

@Greg Tudor This was 1974, and not when they just started in 1968. This was their 9th album, so why would they want to do a cover?

    Greg Tudor

I believe I understand now; I initially misunderstood the comment to which I replied to.

It seems that the initial nucleus of 1968 was not quite the songwriting power that they would eventually become...and by this point in their career they were purposely avoiding cover songs (except the occasional live cover).

  25. Anders Lindberg

This song could have been about me. Every one else in my family and cousins made it big, with grat jobs and great money, but not me. Ive always been poor, lonely and mostly out of work. Notjing at all works for me.

    majk2006

    You are not alone.

    Keiron Thomson

HA ha ha ha ha. For fucks sake take a look around. WE are all well and truly fucked... HA ha ha. Be happy your alive...

    Alison Hawkins

I feel ya friend, me too! Hey, at least we got good taste in music!

    lucalone

you are not the only one^

    V Lashing

The song is black sheep not loser of the family

  26. siskokidd

Rainbow, at the time, and this song in particular, came nowhere close to the lofty heights of DP Mk2, or Mk3 for that matter. DP and RB dropped off my radar at this point. Just an opinion of a music fan.

    Terminal Passage

Pretty sure only wankers state their opinions as fact and judge people by their names. Nice try asshat.

    siskokidd

    Sorry, snowflake.

    Clive Bindley

    Hi sisko...bye piss ko.

    Terminal Passage

siskokidd Don't worry I don't think anyone cares what is and isn't on your musical radar. Don't spout your opinions as fact though.

    siskokidd

Check your reading glasses, man. I actually say the words "just an opinion." lol

  27. Cornelio Africano

  29. mls300154

Was originally recorded by Quatermass.Check it out if you don't believe me. Jhonny Gustafsson on bass, went on yo Roxy Music

    KtK

yes!!! but both sound great !!!!!rainbow plays it a bit faster

    Lazy Guy

mls300154 i listenned to both versions, couldn't bare the quartermass version, just couldn't... this is much better imo

  30. Colin Hackman

tomorrow I don't have to WAKE UP!

  31. toppop100

It's a real shame DP Mark III didn't record this song - they would have done it much better!

    petrafied

@PopeShaitan There's nothing wrong with the song - listen to the Quatermass version. They do it right!

    xXshadowtailzXx

    @PopeShaitan shut the fuck up.

    Aaron Moran

    @PopeShaitan shut the fuck up.

    Lazy Guy

PopeShaitan eh, songs are songs, happy songs exist and end up fine, this song is just fine as it is right now imo
