Rage Against The Machine - Darkness Lyrics

Greed!
Causing innocent blood to flow
Entire culture, lost in the overthrow
They came to seize and take whatever they please
Then all they gave back was death and disease
My people were left with no choice but to decide
To conform to a system, responsible for genocide
Responsible for genocide
Responsible for genocide...

[Spoken:]
'AIDS is killing the entire African nation
And a vaccine is still supposedly under preparation
But these governments they don't mind the procrastination
They say "We'll kill them off, take their land and go there for vaction.'

My people's culture was strong, it was pure
And if not for that white greed
It would've endured
My people were left with no choice but to decide
To conform to a system
Their minds enslaved
Their souls encaged
I feel the rage
It's brutality can never be undone
But the sun is not yet set
The bass and drums and microphones a threat
That's when ya investigate the crimes from the inside
And see that they're responsible for genocide
Responsible for genocide
Responsible for genocide...

Ya cram ya culture down my throat
Say I'm inferior when I find that I choke
Ya fill my mind with a false sense of history
And then you wonder why I have no identity?
Well I'll strike a match and it'll catch and
Spread the insight we need
A tiny fire, burning bright
Shedding light on the darkness of greed

A yes yes y'all
And ya don't stop
Shedding light on the darkness of greed

A yes yes y'all
And ya don't stop
Shedding light on the darkness of greed.

Yeah!

When I found this song on Napster after I was re-introduced to RATM in 1999, I felt like I uncovered goddamn buried treasure. I didn’t realize it was on The Crow soundtrack until after...incredible collection of songs.

    b.... ....

lol right? like, how unconventional of a guitar solo could you get? possibly my favorite one

  25. J.... K....

The fact that this wasn't in the movie hardly makes it a soundtrack.
I would've _LOVED_ to have this song playing during the scene when Brandon/Eric purposely falls onto the garbage mound.

    J.... K....

Atleast the guitar solo would've been nice

  26. C.... M....

    Chupa meu pinmnmnto então

  35. h.... ....

Got to see them do this in '97, powerful performance.

  36. D.... W....

This is the only Rage song where I am not a big fan of Morello's guitar scratching or whatever you want to call it. It seems to fit in a lot of Rage's songs, but this one, maybe because of the awesome mellow jazzy feel and the powerful lyric part, the guitar scratching just didn't seem to fit here.

  37. S.... ....

The Crow was the soundtrack, the soundtrack was the Crow.

  38. S.... P....

Man, awesome lyrics. I just found this demo album of RATM.

  39. S.... K....

Let them remake reboot this beautiful tragic story, I’ll watch it, but nothing will match the original tragic The Crow with the matching music, reboot remake all they want, nothing will match this ..... Brandon Lee The Crow

    S.... K....

Stephanie Kay Apparently they put the reboot on pause because Momoa and a director backed out. It may never happen

  40. I.... K....

    Boring but no bad

  41. D.... R....

I love the first 30 seconds, is how Jazz Nu Metal

  42. D.... Z....

    Such a powerful song.

  43. D.... R....

    SADNESS OF GREED :C

  44. Y.... V....

What scene is this song playing in? It sounds familiar but I can't pin down what scene it's in specifically.

    Y.... V....

Yiorgios Vazouras i don’t think it was used. Maybe a scene that was cut from the final edit.

    Y.... V....

    When they’re eating hot dogs

  45. A.... M....

    I'm in awe......

  46. M.... D....

settle for nothing + fistfull of steel = darkness

  47. N.... S....

This song is in my top 5 favorite songs of all time

  48. V.... ....

The music is ruined by the ridiculous SJW message.

    V.... ....

aka Rage Against The Machine's entire discography in 10 words or less.

    V.... ....

Vazcular I don’t agree with the message either, but the music is great!

    V.... ....

Ah yes, those stupid anti genocide libtards!!!!!!

  49. R.... K....

Another awesome song from the crow soundtrack! Best soundtrack of all time!

  50. C.... L....

I use to listen to these types of bands religiously, when i was a rebel. Now i just laugh at their stupid messages

    Still a good song tho

    C.... L....

Most of these bands had stupid messages but RATM wasn't BS'ing about their messages. These things came from a real place, especially in the lyrics of De La Rocha. The man is a true poet and he truly hoped this music would open people's eyes to the injustices of the world. For these guys, it wasn't a gimmick.

  51. D.... Z....

wish I had seen this band.

  52. A.... S....

They made the vaccine, theme park cancelled.

  53. t.... ....

reminds me of the way we lie and pretend to love animals i think humane meat should be used as a very very very very short term plan to transition towards total abstinence.

  54. D.... L....

Probably in my top 3 favorite Rage songs!!! Too bad it's not on any of their albums.

    D.... L....

Dennis Leavitt RATM went the way of Plasmatics. who devolved into the Wendy O show. it became what's that crazy mfr gonna say next?

    D.... L....

    It's on their live album

    D.... L....

It's on "Live & Rare" as Darkness of Greed as well as on Disc 2 of RATM XX

  55. F.... S....

I fucking love this. It`s how it goes.

  56. S.... S....

Is Timmy C playing a fretless bass in this song?

    S.... S....

    Obviously

  57. B.... B....

    Boom!!!

  58. K.... A....

Fear? Fear is for the enemy. Fear and bullets.

  59. R.... ....

Deja entendu for a profile pic? Myyyyyyy man

  60. j.... ....

Tom Morello is the Hendrix of the 90's

    j.... ....

You wouldn't have had a Morello or a Fruscante if not for Hendrix. He was a big influence on both of their careers.

They are ALL AMAZING in their own ways people!!!

    j.... ....

Woah woah woah, I’ll admit that Tom is a pretty good player, but I seriously don’t think he’s on Hendrix levels of good.

    j.... ....

Hello World it blows my mind how people like you like to hate on hendrix. I have a clear biased tho I am a hendrixhead. Have 70 percent of his live catalog. Some of the bootlegs I have where hendrix jams riffs that are decades ahead of his time. Sometimes it sounds like more modern rock riffs, grunge style (shows where he plays half step down) I’ve found myself even getting hints of early metal with the use of his soloing with feedback and wammy. Stuff that I hear and I have to do a double take to realize I’m listening to hendrix. Some shows he played heavier, melodically, and some shows were straight balls out fucking heavy shredding into psychedelic oblivion. Some night he was shit. Some shows were slow and tired. Some were just off from his equipment or depending on how high he was and off what. Some of his best shows were off Owsley Acid (Grateful Dead Sound Engineer who happens to be one of the worlds biggest LSD suppliers at the time) but I digress, the use of the techniques he learned inspired SO many artists. You cannot deny the talent and most importantly the impact hendrix had on any who picked up a guitar. He is probably your favorite artist, favorite artist. It’s funny it’s always young people who like to hate hendrix and just say he sucks or is overrated. Some one who loves and respect music can recognize the magnitude of his sound at the time. And he had a fraction of the time playing for the experience before he passed away. Other bands that are huge names from that era had more years and more albums to solidify their legacy. Hendrix did it in way less time. He was an explosion when he took off but unfortunately his fuse was short. He died in 71’ and he is still impacting generations today. You don’t sound experienced.

For some reason this song especially the guitar solo reminds me 90s arcade video game.

  64. M.... S....

    Rage against the Cabal machine!!!!

  65. N.... F....

I loved this song since I was 12 years old. I'm going to be 32 soon and I still love this song. RATM fucking rocks. This song should've been on their first album. It fucking rules. Have they ever played this song live? And if so how did the crowd react?

  66. T.... G....

I remember hearing this in the crow, Brandon lee was a great actor

  67. J.... B....

This could very well be Rage's crown jewel of a track because the collective sigh of disappointment with issues like war and disease rings loud with most of humanity today. The sound of the song makes me imagine it was thrown down in one of those poetry/jazz clubs where people step up to an open mic to soliloquize, complimented by a background of smooth tunes flowing from behind them. But the fact of the matter is this, its not enough to recognize the problem. You got to be a part of the solution if you want to do more than just get by. We all see the disintegration of society on different levels, but what are YOU doing to fight against the hectic situation that is life itself?
Jesus Christ's whole career on earth was centered around bringing a mindset of patience and piece of mind to the people he interacted with. And he commanded his followers to study the Bible preach the truths they learn to their fellow man. (Matthew 28:19,20) But why did he command that? Because there is a promise of such a better life to come... but only to those who make a determination to live a morally clean life and do the will of his father Jehovah God. (1 John 2:17)
Now who on this earth do you see going door to door free of charge teaching people about the Bible and Jehovah God's promise to faithful mankind? There is only one group of people doing this. Jehovah's Witnesses. Be courageous and talk to them the next time you see them. They will use the Bible to answer any and every question you have about life and why we are still mired in the social struggles and pains that we see each and every day.
Jehovah God and his son Jesus Christ love you. They want you to succeed. But you need to reach out them first if you want help.

Much love to all the goodhearted people out there.
    Sincerely,
A kid from Los Angeles Los Angeles land

The crow was a amazing movie with a great soundtrack
    RIP Brandon lee

    d.... t....

can someone explain Brandon Lee's death to me

    d.... t....

    Joshua Steagall yeap last month

    d.... t....

Joshua Steagall He was shooting a scene were the crow was being... shot. And someone in the props department confused real rounds with fake ones. So, Brandon was shot in the abdomen and rushed to the hospital. He died shortly after.

    d.... t....

Darkness Is all The Queen of the Damned had a great soundtrack too😭

    d.... t....

Jorge Ramirez the worst part is that the handler who was firing the gun was Brandon's friend. He felt so guilty about it that he quit directly following the end of the movie

  71. K.... ....

"It started in Bushwick, defacing the community......"

  72. B.... ....

One of Rage's most powerful songs, and that's saying something. But that sweet jazz flavor Morello provides, it gives the song this great ambience that suites not only this song but the whole tone of this film and its soundtrack (if that makes sense).

    B.... ....

    BoingTarash1960s and funk

    B.... ....

BoingTarash1960s all the bands blew this out of the park mate from a 50 year old . Just beat cancer cardiac arrest same time and just starting on YouTube and found this mate . Stoked

    B.... ....

Max Zatlin Yes of course, but Rage are known for their strong funk sound in general. Bluesy Jazz elements, though? This is one of, if not the only song of theirs that flows like this (everything from the guitars to drums are jazzy).

  73. D.... M....

    damn this takes me back

Wakeup pal. This is not what the government of our world want. And you maybe a victim of the truth I speak of.

  81. T.... I....

I just realized this version is different than the Demo from the remastered album

    T.... I....

theres also Darkness Of Greed by Zach's straight edge band Inside Out.

    T.... I....

Take It Easy - I'm Easily Offended To be honest, I prefer this version over the demo.

  82. J.... M....

Zack's lyrics are always so deep....

  83. g.... ....

Back in high school, this was huge, as it made us all feel angsty and angry. What was lost on us at the time was the fact that, due to $100 ticket prices, only rich white people could afford to ever see RATM in concert. I don't know if Zack and the boys donated 100% of their proceeds to migrant farm workers or not, but they sure liked singing about taking money to do so.

    g.... ....

That's BS. I went to the rage & wu tang show and it was $35 at the most. That probably included parking.

    g.... ....

What the hell does being white have to do with being rich? Black and others have just as much opportunity to become rich too. Sick of the whingers. Anyone of any colour with hard work can succeed in life.  Even ghetto slum have choice to get out of the vicious cycle, instead of being victims.

    g.... ....

Helpmeihavenolife SOOOO easy to say when coming from a white man's mouth.

    g.... ....

It wasn't lost on nearly everyone. I remember reading about a person who won RATM's young activist of the month and having mixed feelings about it since they found it a bit hypocritical that RATM was signed onto a major corporate label.

    g.... ....

This is about the time I graduate high school and I never paid more than $50 for a concert back in them days I don't know where you would have paid $100 to see you Rage Against the Machine in 1994 but nowhere where I live in Kansas City Missouri would that have happened!!!

  84. B.... L....

whites have been subjected to poor treatment by the united states. "no Irish need apply" "no dagos, no wops" ect ect. this is for any group oppressed by the darkness of greed.

    B.... L....

Joe Smith I think he his being subversive man. It’s the response to the systematic mistreatment of minorities in this country. He is a leader and decided “Whites” would be a good way to get the attention of low minded people who identify themselves “white” instead of a human being.

    B.... L....

Ben Lawless oh you mean whites from the South?? Yea everybody hates them that’s why their so sour

    B.... L....

TightSqueeze Jam at FB well lots of women are just jealous of pretty women(not saying their ugly) but yea the singer was Hispanic I think

    B.... L....

@Winds of March Journey/Perry tribute band non whites got it worse than the female.

    B.... L....

Denny Cochran There is no systemic oppression of these groups, they use this as an excuse as to why they can’t get ahead in life instead of actually working and becoming the best possible version of themselves they can be

  85. S.... K....

what an amazing song to not even end up on one of their albums

  86. W.... S....

Brilliant album top to bottom. The last song makes me cry everyone every time

    W.... S....

    +William Rescigno Freedom?

    W.... S....

It can't rain all the time

  87. G.... ....

This song is just timeless... Makes me wonder why rage REALLY broke up... "The bass and drums and microphone a threat". The government will neutralize any "threat" without hesitation

    G.... ....

They wouldve been even bigger in the 2000s since there were alot more issues they couldve wrote more songs about

    G.... ....

They broke up because Zach wanted to pursue action on his beliefs rather than sing about them and do little. The remaining band members teamed up with Chris Cornell of sound garden and formed audio slave.

    G.... ....

iirc, it was Zack. story was he was always a bit of a dick, like Axl Rose from GnR (though nowhere near as much) or Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin. it didn't sit with the rest of the band and they were always fighting over dumb crap.

i don't recall activism having much to do with it, though that could be the "straw that broke the camel's back".

(small irony: Chris Cornell had a drinking problem and it didn't end until at least after the first Audioslave album, judging by the abrupt change in lyrics and style. it had sullied his time with Kim Thayil and his old Soundgarden buddies and couldn't have been any better with Audioslave until it passed. lol)

    G.... ....

Imagine thinking RATM were a threat to anything.

    G.... ....

    They're back next year

  88. D.... ....

    T.... D....

    Tony D yeeeah jjhjhhhhhhj jerks

  96. b.... ....

I've heard some retarded conspiracy theories in my time, but Zach's rant about the West attempting to use AIDS to wipe out everyone in Africa so we can go there for a holiday (?) is near the top of the stupidity scale.
I like RATM, but I'm glad I don't take political cues from them.

    b.... ....

Again, Zach is talking about those in power.  why would you say "we?"  you obviously believe some convuluted truth that you yourself are part of the "we."  In all comes down to those in Power.  If you ever here Zach talk, "not his hyperbole induced stage presence,"  he VERY MUCH advocates peace and war as a last resort.  yes....I believe this is an exaggerated song, but......at the core of RATM's message is finding the truth, not just the one sided stories "they" want you to hear.  he's trying to educate and open your mind to the fact that our leaders need to be help accountable for their actions, and they are not above the law!!!

    b.... ....

@Dennis Leavitt Plus who are we to say AIDS wasn't some kind of chemical warfare? Used to wipe out nations whilst keeping its infrastructure...It really would not surprise me what lengths these greedy people would go to.

    b.... ....

yeah using biological warfare for mass decimation is completely unheard of and unfathomable...

    b.... ....

Woah...man this is way over your head. Not a literal word-for-word "theory" put forth. More of a way to get ppl thinkung differently.
