Rafferty, Gerry - Baker Street Lyrics

Winding your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well, another crazy day
You'll drink the night away
And forget about everything
This city desert makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people, but it's got no soul
And it's taken you so long
To find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything

You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're trying, you're trying now
Another year and then you'd be happy
Just one more year and then you'd be happy
But you're crying, you're crying now

Way down the street there's a light in his place
He opens the door, he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen
And you talk about anything
He's got this dream about buying some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one-night stands
And then he'll settle down
In some quiet little town
And forget about everything

But you know he'll always keep moving
You know he's never gonna stop moving
'Cause he's rolling, he's the rolling stone
And when you wake up, it's a new morning
The sun is shining, it's a new morning
And you're going, you're going home

While I appreciate it now, this song was so overplayed on AM radio that I cursed Gerry Rafferty. I haven’t heard anything from him in a while. I wonder what he’s doing.

Have always hated this song. Don't know what it is about it, but the whole saxophone intro just really gets under my skin. Weird really, cause I typically like a good saxophone.

When I hear this song I think about milk.... My sister and I had a great time in London in the 80s. We go home around four-five in the morning after lots of dancing at the Tiffanys disco, close to Piccadilly Circus. Just in time for the milk-man to arrive and leave two bottles of milk at the door. He says: "Hello!" and I reply "Hi there!". What wonderful times it was. I had to walk from Blackpool something to my home in West Ealing, London. A long walk and then I always thought about the lyrics "The sun is shining and you´re going, you´re going home"...

When I was five we moved from Winnipeg to Atlanta in 1978 and lived there for two and a half years. I always associate this song with Atlanta, with rafting down the Chattahoochee with my family and our neighbors on lazy weekends, with the smell of honeysuckle, with kudzu enveloping everything. Even then this song seemed to have a sadness about it that I couldn't understand, and it's never changed or gotten old ever since. Thanks for writing it, Gerry.
