Rafferty, Gerry - A Dangerous Age Lyrics

Night was fallin', the horizon was callin', as we drove into the setting sun
Goin' back to that country that we still call home
Said good bye to the capital city, yeah this town has got me on the run
I need to spend some time out in the great unknown.

I'm lookin' for sweet inspiration, every morning noon and night
But these days it just keeps on passing me by,

I know you don't feel like making this journey, but you know that time is on my side
I can't go on living like a refugee
Way down south where the living is easy, we can look across the great divide
But all we've got is a pocketful of memories.

We stood on the motorway shoulder as the sun rose over the lowland hills
And my heart broke down, when I looked at you
Don't tell me you're leavin' me now, when you know how hard I've been tryin'
Darling you're my world, don't bring it all tumbling down
It's only the code of the road, and the sound of a motor wheel cryin'
Don't renege my love, don't bring it all tumbling down.

One more morning, yes another day dawning, and I'm looking at a bird that sings
Wish I could change my whole life, and just fly away
Over the mountains down through the valleys, through the homeland of the Celtic kings
Now it's just the frontline for the U.S.A..

We live in a time when the spirit of love and devotion is breakin' down
And my heart broke down when I looked at you
Don't tell me you're leavin' me now, when you know how hard I've been tryin'
Darling you're my world, don't bring it all tumbling down
It's only the code of the road, and the sound of a motor wheel cryin'
Don't renege my love, don't bring it all tumbling down.

I still can't believe it - Gerry is dead. Such incredible sense for music and his uncomparable voice. This song still sends me shivers. Great song, great voice. Plus his "wall of sound". I feel wrapped in music hearing most of his songs. Gerry, my favourite all time hero!

If I was to be left alone on an island and I have to choose only one artist to take his music with me, it would be Gerry's, I never get tired of hearing his work, so sad he passed away too early... I absolutely love this song... North & South is definitely a musical peak in his career....

    G.... C....

I've said the same thing repeatedly

    Great Album!

I think only Shipyard Town was lifted as a single from the album (in the UK anyway to the best of my knowledge). Regardless this song is great from an artist who had major talent. Caught him in concert in Glasgow back in 1993.
    David.

    D.... C....

i bet he was incredible live as his vocals were just pure; i cant think of any male vocalist that had that gift, to this day

    D.... C....

His voice was one in a million. He was such a brilliant songwriter (at his best up there with Lennon and McCartney imo). I've just bought his new 2cd reissue "Who Knows What The Day Will Bring - The Complete Transatlantic Recordings 1969-1971". Has his Humblebums stuff and his first solo album as well as a host of demos and outtakes. Wonderfully packaged with a nice booklet with extensive sleevenotes and superb remastered sound.

Gerry Rafferty was an unfairly underrated artist!

    l.... ....

And still is.... Not even 100 thumbs up for such a masterpiece

  17. M.... S....

this music was my inspiration in the late eightees and tomorrow

  18. l.... ....

The dangerous age for Gerry Rafferty was 63 years old. Another great lost talent.

  19. D.... H....

@joevs21001 Couldn"t agree with you more-Gerry was truly gifted, but never fully appreciated by the masses.

  20. j.... ....

This is one of Gerry's all time best. I'm surprised it did not chart in the top ten on the US Billboard hits back in it's day. Truly an incredible song by a man with a gifted talent for writing, producing, arranging, playing, and singing songs that are second to none. Gerry should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as other honor's of music, even if posthumously do to his incredible contributions to music in his almost 50 year career.

  21. j.... ....

One of my very favorites from Gerry Rafferty. Gerry was a true musical genius and died far too young. There are very few in the musical "genre" so to speak that are as talented as Gerry Rafferty. Gerry had not only an incredible voice, but he also had a talent for writing, producing, and arranging music. If people looked into his music, I think they would find out that his music is something you come across once in a lifetime. Truly incredible...............

    j.... ....

Well said, a truly great songwriter

  22. m.... ....

beautifull harmonies he really sings as jimmy webb said of one of his earlier efforts on one of his albums its rare.

  23. J.... C....

My lab partner in college just introduced me to Gerry Rafferty today. Absolutely amazing!

  24. v.... ....

Thanks for posting one of Gerrys' very best. I could listen to this on a continuous loop. The voice, the words, the sax, WOW. I too wish I could change my whole life and just fly away....

    v.... ....

just a fantastic album, try to pick a weak track, no, so inspirational

  25. w.... ....

RIP, gerry, so sad that you lost your battle.

    w.... ....

Yes! I'd like to say "here's to you, Gerry" and raise my glas, but ... alcohol :/
