  5. C.... ....

  6. K.... ....

One of the few covers that matches the original. Not better, but even

  7. J.... g....

One of the best covers EVER. Thank you Josh Homme for doing justice for this song

  8. j.... ....

Just would like to say i enjoy all the versions of this song and i love QOTSA. Josh has good taste in music as Elliott was a genius and such a great song writer.

  9. s.... ....

I'm a huge Josh/QOTSA fan, but do yourself a favor and listen to the Heatmiser version. Blows this one away.

  10. a.... ....

listen to the osi cover just great

  11. j.... ....

I love Elliott so much and I love QOTSA. Think Josh's voice is great for any Elliott song.

  12. I.... L....

I hate this interpretation. These voicings are very lazy and inaccurate and miss the whole mood of the song. The original voicings are what makes the song so good, imo.

  13. S.... A....

I love how they put their twist but kept it true
Thank you QOTSA not only to help spread the word of Elliott but keeping his legacy alive.

  14. O.... F....

No bad dream fucker's going to boss me around
Christian Brothers gonna take him down
But it can't help me get over
    Don't be cross, it's sick I want
I've seen the boss blink on and off

Fake concerns is what's the matter, man
And you think I ought to shake
    Your motherfucking hand
Well, I know how much you care
    Don't be cross, it's sick I want
I've seen the boss blink on and off

Come here by me, I want you here
Nightmares become me, it's so fucking clear

    Don't be cross, it's sick I want
I've seen the boss blink on and off
Come here by me, I want you here
Nightmares become me, it's so fucking clear
Nightmares become me, it's so fucking clear

  15. D.... C....

Homme has good taste in music.

  21. S.... V....

We are a group of music snobs nerding out over our favorite songs that fall under a new theme each day. Come show us what you got! Today’s theme is “Christians”.

  22. e.... w....

Might be my favorite song of all time, such power. Gotten me through some shit man, long live Queens and Elliott's legacy..

  23. U.... ....

As a fan of both, this is fucking heaven.

  24. j.... j....

i really want this song for download, someone knows a site for this ?

  25. P.... B....

Guys both this version and the Elliot smith version are incredible, now calm down

  26. h.... m....

i only have one word for this song. magnificent

  27. D.... ....

God, I love the harmony vocals on this.

    D.... ....

    Daniel • it's perfect

  28. s.... s....

Nice cover, good actually. Still I have to say that I prefer the original.

  29. A.... L....

I love so much Elliott Smith and this is the best cover from a great band too! love it ❤

  30. K.... ....

I know Elliot Smith wrote this about alcoholism, but I can't think some of the lyrics aren't totally relevant to how many of us are feeling this week.

    K.... ....

KingThrillgore Did you write this about getting triggered over Trump winning the election? ROFL. Incredible!!

    K.... ....

    Astronomy Fan Hehehehehe.

    K.... ....

    why alcoholism?

  31. N.... ....

Isn't it something how certain songs can have so much meaning? Even if it's not the same meaning as the artist intended. I first came across this song while one of my life long friends was battling cancer. He lost the fight shortly after. Since then I've never been able to listen to this song without tears. But I keep coming back to it.
I'll never forget you bud. If there is an after life, I can't wait to meet you there.

    N.... ....

    That's fucked man

    N.... ....

I'm sorry. You will collide at some point

  32. J.... V....

    Excelente cover

  33. K.... ....

epic cover. haven't heard this in years and it still sounds as good as the original.

  34. n.... s....

from what i have heard the song is about people trying to get him to go to rehab the when he say ive seen the boss he his referring
     to his addictions

    n.... s....

@nick stephens Not that you are wrong but you could say the same thing about MANY Elliott Smith songs. A really transparent example comes from when a formal intervention was organized by some friends and his management in the late 90s, which yielded "Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands" on the album XO.

Also these silly Youtube comment flame wars about who is a better vocalist or player or writer or whatever are obviously silly (and appear on basically every music related video on Youtube). Come on, young'uns, it's music. Just enjoy it. Don't take a picture, don't write a dissertation, don't hector someone at a party, just connect with it. As Elliott said once (paraphrasing) "If you like it, there must be something good about it because...well, you like it." QOTSA and Elliott Smith and Heatmiser, etc. are apples and pineapples and beautiful oranges.

    n.... s....

true most of his songs are about addiction but the lines of this song like fake concerns are whats are a matter man and you think i ought shake your mother fucking hand i know i'm paraphraing but they really reminding me of they atmosphere of rehabs and meeting or at least what i felt being in those places at least i might be reading to much into it

    n.... s....

@nick stephens He wasn't even addicted to drugs when he wrote this song. He said himself numerous times that his songs weren't "about" specifically what he was writing about. He enjoyed using symbols for bigger pictures, bigger ideas. You people just want to write every song off as being about drugs, even ones written when he wasn't using.

    n.... s....

You people? Who? Did you ever meet Elliott Smith? Have you ever had an addiction problem?

Sure, no art is strictly "about" one thing but honestly there's a difference between being open to wider intepretation and being utterly naive. Drugs and addiction are suffused into his songs because they were a part of his life. To suggest otherwise is naive.

  35. B.... W....

I just BTB'd this and the original....  I like Elliots take, but qotsa takes it to the next level IMO...  The original lacks the punch Hutch and Goss dialed into the production,to me anyway......  carry on....

  36. B.... F....

Pretty good cover, but it could never replace Elliott's Heatmiser and acoustic versions. Only my opinion- but I think Elliott Smith was simply on another level compared to any other artist. Only the Beatles come close... haha.

    B.... F....

    @HesperianHorsePower
    Frank Black

    B.... F....

I totally agree. Elliott Smith and The Beatles are at the very top of the mountain. But you should check out Nick Drake. He was a huge influence on Elliott, and his music is ridiculously good

    B.... F....

+HesperianHorsePower Jack White r in Homme's level for sure.

    B.... F....

There sure are as many opinions as there are people. I think saying that Homme is the best in rock in the last 50+ years is an exaggeration and to OP's comment - I also think the beatles are the most overrated band in history. Agree to disagree.

    B.... F....

@Daniel • Overrated by whom? Most people think they just wrote bubble gum pop (I want to hold your hand, etc.). Musicians can appreciate them as creative geniuses, true musical innovators, and masters of songwriting (of all genres). They were also highly skilled musicians, regardless of what you've heard. Paul McCartney was a near virtuosic bassist

  37. e.... s....

Saying that Homme is a better vocalist than Smith is like an opinion. Technically Smith had way more range.

    e.... s....

Disagree but thats ok. It's an opinion.

    e.... s....

Axel Rose has a massive range. He can still fuck off though.

    e.... s....

    The dude.

    e.... s....

    bull ya

    e.... s....

Like an opinion lol no shit derp

  38. r.... ....

i am sooo happy that i found this song some days ago...just can't get it out of my mind and i like this version even more than the original.

  39. c.... ....

I love Smith and Qotsa. This means the world to be.

  40. S.... S....

@SpunkySkunk347 Elliott Smith used 'the boss', 'the man', etc, as metaphors for addiction a lot in his music. That's all. This song was him saying "I don't want help, I know what I'm doing to myself". That's what makes his music so haunting in retrospect. His entire catalog is a diary of his struggle to choose life and the fact that the story ends with his death, the nature of his songs, his vocal style... for a hard core Elliott fan it's the sensation that it's like recordings by a ghost who hadn't left the Earth yet

    S.... S....

Stephen Wik I really like it, and I think the other guys a good musician but I prefer this version. It could just be that I love Josh so much that personal bias is blinding me.

    S.... S....

@Nicklaus Kindelberger that makes sense. You prolly like music with a lot of songs with a lot of repetition. Not a diss, that's what Queens does a lot. Little Sister, Song For The Dead, Feel Good Hit Of The Summer, all and more have basically the same thing note-wise. For example, Song for the Dead has two notes for the intro (if you wanna count a harmonic as a note then you get one, which isn't musically correct because it's still a frequentey of a note, maybe higher in pitch or flat)

Elliott is the opposite, you need to take time and understand the song, because he usually doesn't repeat a lot. I mean he had the verse, chorus, verse structure, but he always added or excluded notes. Josh loves that (No One Knows), so that's why I'm guessing he likes Elliott. Elliott though of chords as puzzle pieces and that's why he ends up with chords that are like make you wonder what the fuck he's doing, and he will just go to the next one, and so on. He made me quit drugs and to play guitar again. Yeah I would shoot up a Mexican 8 Ball of Smack and listen, but it gave me hope and it's awesome.

    S.... S....

@Behind The Lenses Oddly enough Qotsa is one of the only "repetitive" bands that I love. I'm usually REALLY impatient. (Stoner metal in general is a nightmare for me. There's a song by a band called Sleep that's 2 hours UGHHHHHH. Kills me)

    S.... S....

@Nicklaus Kindelberger try his other stuff. Speed Trials, Ballad of Big Nothing, honestly Either/Or is my favorite record of all time. It's Elliott at his prime I think, he hit another high point during the first few tours for Figure 8. XO is great too, and so is Figure 8 (Wouldn't Mama Be Proud an Everything Means Nothing to Me are songs that helped me through a lot. I remember when that snare hits and then after all that chaos, the song ends with some piano and just fades away. Everything Means Nothing to Me is his haunting vibes dialed up to 11. It catch's you by surprise and makes me cry. For XO Baby Britain and Bottle Up an Explode! Are highlights) if you really wanna push yourself and try something odd (I'm gonna warn you though, it's a rough listen since the record was released after he passed, and considering the circumstances in which he passed makes the record way more difficult to take in, but some amazing songs) listen to From a Basement On A Hill. Kings Crossing to me is the most dark and just chilling songs ever (just thinking of the lyrics gives me chills) you need to look up the lyrics cause for some odd reason the chorus that has way too much distortion that it drowns out his voice, but Elliott wasn't alive to mix it. A Fond Farewell is tissue worthy for sure, it's just a really heavy record.

If you can't tell I'm a huge Elliott fan and I love all his records. Try the songs I mentioned. If it's not for you, cool. Taste cannot be changed

    S.... S....

Hmm I'm gonna call sorta BS. He wasn't facing addiction at this point and was at most drinking and smoking weed maybe, but during the release of the film many people said he wasn't a full blown addict yet. Elliott claims he started to remember being molested sexual and abused sexually and physical by his step dad(?) Or someone like close to him, that would make way more sense because how does addiction blink? Lol. Anyway I'm sure maybe later he did that but logically while writing this, it's not possible. Also No Confidence Man uses the same thing and that was a REALLY early song by him, and it's obviously referring to who ever did him harm. I can see where you got the idea from, but it's a stretch. A lot about Elliott's addiction and life in general has always been over exaggerated and just somethings that people say are simply not true when it comes to Elliott. Inside he may have been depressed, but he has times where he was just fine. He's made me laugh in interviews, people say he was always joking, and some videos online (Strange Parralel?) Are just really funny "Can I see Your Tattoo?" "No" part made me spit my drink all over the screen and of course dat robot hand... Omg when he's walking down the street with it I lost my shit.
Instead of remembering only the dark stuff let's not forget Elliott's real personality. He sure made me laugh a lot.

  41. C.... A....

dudaextreme, Yeah man, the legit version of how it is supposed to be played is much more difficult than this version. I had to learn 2 new chords to play it the legit way and the other ways I have seen people play it are chords I learned as a kid. Josh Hommes is a better vocalist than Elliott, but Elliott was a great guitarist and multi instrumentalist and just untouchable when it came to composing and orchestrating haunting music.

    C.... A....

    Well said

    C.... A....

@Carl Andrews Homme plays just as many instruments btw

    C.... A....

@CuentosBifurcados they're both great in their own right. Who cares? It's all subjective

  42. Z.... A....

Queens are Elliot smith fans! Had no clue

  43. R.... ....

I actually prefer this to Elliott Smith's.

    R.... ....

Rum&Coke Ehhhh. Couldn't even force myself to say that

    R.... ....

Rum&Coke listen to the Heatmeiser version. Elliott Smith will win you back guaranteed

    R.... ....

LOL I just posted the same thing in the post above before seeing yours!

    R.... ....

    Heatmiser's version blew me away!!

    R.... ....

    yeah, no.

  44. s.... ....

Well that's just like your opinion man.

  45. K.... x....

    I love this song,so bad!

  46. a.... b....

I do like this song, and QOTSA are my favourite band, but Homme and his music carry too much confidence to pull off a song as vulnerable and cutting as this. I mean, they did a bang-up job, fuckin' A, but... it's not classic coke, if you get me.

  47. S.... ....

It's a great cover, but it is a cover. Substance wise it doesn't come close to Elliott's original; simply because you can feel the emotion in his, as you should considering it's his song.

  48. B.... H....

This is a pretty lifeless cover though im comparison to ES to me that makes the biggest difference

  49. l.... ....

It may be that They had a good studio to record in. Elliott Smith did his on a 4 track

  50. t.... ....

    I love Elliott smith

  51. m.... ....

so? he or she just stated her opinion. if you think, that Troy and Joshua are the two best guitarists in the world right now, well that's ok, too. I never get why people want to convince someone else, that their opinion is shit. Other than that, Elliott truly was an amazing guitarist and had some complex shit going on in his songs. Look at the tabs/chords of the original version. Doesn't mean that Troy and Joshua are shitty guitarists. Just saying...

  52. C.... ....

what a completely moronic comment. sounds like you don't know the first thing about playing guitar. they're both fine versions, and the emphasis in either version is not guitar virtuosity. to pick it apart in that regard is to miss the point completely.

  53. f.... ....

Bitch you take that back! Joshua and Troy are a couple of the best guitarists in the world at the minute!

  54. S.... ....

    your both fucking retards.

    Elliott Smith was awesome.
    Qotsa is awesome.

Nobody likes you or your shitty opinions.

  55. S.... ....

well I don't know, there are two possibilities in my mind: either he's talking about the brand of brandy or the the lyrics are just overly-cryptic nonsense

  56. K.... B....

My interpretation of that lyric is as follows: Elliott Smith had a abusive stepfather of whom he lived with from age 3 to 14... the boss is him, and the blinking on and off is the change of his personality when around others. He seemingly was only abusive to Elliott, and it's said that he molested him... while his half siblings weren't subjected to that. But I really don't know... it's just my interpretation.

  57. R.... ....

Ahh interesting info, I guess it was influence by booze but with Queens' you never know. On a side note one of my favourite Kyuss songs is Conan Trautman. It got it's name from the movie characters Conan the Barbarian and Colonel Sam Trautman in the first Rambo movie. But yet the lyrics have almost absolutely nothing to do with either of those movies.

  58. S.... ....

"Christian Brothers" is a brand of brandy. "No bad dream f***er's gonna boss me around, Christian Brothers gonna take him down" means he's going to drink to deal with other people. I guess the song isn't just about drinking, it's more about being the outcast in a close-minded society.

  59. R.... ....

What? How does this have to do with drinking? Shaking hands and fake concerns have to do with booze? I don't think so my friend.

  60. J.... K....

ty qtsa for opening my mind. been following you for awhile thanks to that drummer we all know. thanks to dave, josh and now elliot. you 3 people have shaped my life in ways i can not describe in a post.

  61. S.... ....

It's clearly a song about drinking, but there's still some lines that are hard to make sense of: "I've seen the boss blink on and off", anyone know what it means?

    S.... ....

The boss is god. You'd have to be sick, sick, sick to understand. Blink on and off....god is never reliable (our view of it).

  62. T.... O....

Me too man, where I do get that album??!

  63. H.... ....

@Hologramization a Jordanian Fan here yes he reached the middle east

  64. H.... ....

@OmertaGuitarist Elliot is for those who got a taste in music

  65. n.... d....

    they always sound like audiosex...

  66. A.... ....

    @OmertaGuitarist
    amen to that

  67. A.... ....

    THIS IS A GREAT HOMM(AGE)

  68. A.... ....

    @RushAnthem69
or just show how good the original is

  69. R.... ....

@xtremeskillz510 While I do enjoy all QotSA covers, in my humble opinion that is my least favorite.

  70. D.... ....

I guess I'm the only one who's heard the OSI cover? Heard that first, it's pretty damn good.

    D.... ....

That's where I heard it first just tonight. Can't get this song out of my head now.

  71. A.... V....

Im a huge Elliott fan and I love this cover.

  72. C.... ....

Argh! I want these b sides on CD or on a mp3 file.

  73. b.... b....

This is one of the best songs i've ever heard.
    Easily, best cover.

  74. D.... P....

love the queens, and this is the reason i've been listening to elliott smith recently. but gotta say the original is better.

  75. l.... ....

    what means vijayjay ???

  76. L.... S....

the 2 seconds afetr they came out of their moms vijayjay

  77. L.... c....

    elliott RIP

  78. E.... P....

This sounds almost like David Bowie covering Elliott Smith, I like it and I am a huge Elliott Smith fan.

  79. c.... ....

@dudaextreme i dont understand your need to deem something better than something else. without the original this wouldnt exist. its not like its a reimagining either its a cover; a tribute

  80. c.... ....

@9th bear your comment is fucking infuriating

  81. e.... ....

Oh yea, I can see this song going on in my iPod, somehow...

  82. R.... ....

Indeed my friend, Queens of the Stone Age covers are the best. They either take an awesome song and make it better or show they can pull off their own version and show they are just as good.

  83. R.... ....

    5th grade son! Lol

  84. u.... ....

    love this song!
    that's all i can say! :)

  85. R.... ....

I almost forgot to mention Never Say Never too, which is also better than the original.

  86. R.... ....

White Wedding is a really good one too.

  87. R.... ....

Ok you got me there.... but Nickleback has been around for a while, atleast they're not like The Used or some garbage... you could atleast say Nickleback was good in their early days.

  88. R.... ....

In my opinion QotSA is possibly the best band that I've ever seen do covers... I like all of their cover songs just as much or more than the originals... and I usually cannot stand cover songs.

  89. R.... ....

I don't actually care about your opinion, just don't ever call me out and not expect a response. Lol wow you consider ranting a 6 word post? trust me if I wanted to rant I would have tried. but yes give up becuase you don't know how to argue anyways.

  90. G.... ....

Never actually whined anywhere. Just said I like the other version more and you started off on your rant on how they're more popular. And yeah, but I was obviously right about the e-peen crap because that's exactly what you did. Now I'm moving on, suggesting you do the same.

  91. R.... ....

I think you're the one riding the assumption train chump. You're the one that said "silly e-peen argument" yeah that wasen't insulting. Learn to back your shit up moron. All I was doing was telling you my opinion and you had to cry.

  92. G.... ....

    ^ your opinion*

  93. G.... ....

    That's you're opinion, I won't be drawn into a silly e-peen argument on youtube.

  94. R.... ....

you're right he sounds even better.

  95. G.... ....

I'm a fan of both, but even Josh's voice can't make the song sound the same way Elliott's does.

  96. a.... ....

    so good, damn!

  97. s.... ....

I'm a fan of ES and QotSA, and I have to say I love this cover much more than the original. In fact, it goes back and makes the original that much better.
