Public Image Ltd. - Memories Lyrics

You make me feel ashamed
At acting attitudes
Remember ridicule
It should be clear by now
Clear by now
Your words are useless
Full of excuses
False confidence
Someone has used you well
Used you well
I could be wrong
It could be hate
As far as I can see
Clinging desperately
Imagining pretending
No personality
Dragging on and on and on and on
And on and on and on and on
I think you're slightly late
Slightly late
This person's had enough of useless memories
Always remember
Twisted amenities
Could be wrong
This person's had enough
Of useless memories
Always remember
Twisted amenities
Out of order
Out of order
It could be worse
You're losing all the time
I could be wrong
Could be worse
You're losing all the time
I let you stay too long
I could be wrong
Could be wrong
Whatever pass
Could never last
All in your mind
Where it all began
You're doing wrong
It's not the movies
And you're old

A candid and half apologetic rejoinder. Addressed to Malcolm McLalren. No holds barred. Epic.

  15. M.... S....

If I was asked to do a cover version of a Sex Pistols song, this is the one I would do....

    M.... S....

...Memories? You would do this on what instrument? I play drums.

  17. R.... G....

am i the only one who thinks this track influenced radiohead's idioteque? thom's vocal performance

    R.... G....

I've seen thom wear a pil shirt before and know he cited them as an influence

  18. .... ....

    genious song! great art!

  19. m.... ....

    Sublime ♡

  20. S.... K....

Alien-music and JL's bleating anti-singing voice. Its unique.

  21. g.... ....

Hardly "ahead of its time." I was 16 when this toe tapper came out. Pioneering, okay. Has aged tremendously well, for sure. More like it came along at just the right time.

    g.... ....

    something

    g.... ....

It was a little ahead of it's time. About ten years later the style of music PIL played became extremely popular. It doesn't exactly sound like an album of it's time, or at least, the popular opinion of what songs of that era sounded like.

    g.... ....

XoxeroThePoet You're right. Ahead of its time means it was already sounding like music that no one else had even contemplated at that time. Post punk took a while to catch up to this and by the time it did, PiL had moved on.

    g.... ....

it just means it sounds like nothing else out at that time, so much so that PIL style of music didn't gain appreciation or stylistic elements didn't become trendy until years later on. thats basically it. for example, people say john carpenter did vaporwave music before vaporwave even existed as a genre.

    g.... ....

and yeah, PIL is pioneering for sure.

  22. P.... J....

    so fresh

  23. i.... ....

This will be the album we will be dancing to when the apocalypse comes.

    i.... ....

agree .. providing theres still an electric supply :-)

    i.... ....

    KJ's Fire Dances too !

  24. s.... h....

    brilliant

    like we didn`t know it

  25. R.... A....

Sublime poetry. This song is about fake people.

    R.... A....

    +Richard Ames It's about memories

    R.... A....

+Tampa Bay Free Press no. its about fake people. listen to the lyrics.

    R.... A....

+Richard Ames you listen it personifies memories as a fake person

    R.... A....

its about that disease he had as a kid that made him forget everything

    R.... A....

I think it's about "nostalgia" and living in the past.

  26. T.... L....

Such a ground breaking album. pre house and Jah Wobbles Dub influence a 12 year olds music trip in his bedroom on the old Garrard stereo

  27. C.... G....

Over three decades old, but still 50 years ahead of it's time.

  28. K.... C....

It was heavily influenced by disco. John Lydon does not deny this at all; it was the only music he was listening to at the time.

  29. g.... ....

At the time all the bandwagon jumpers made disco suck which gave rise to punk. JL, ever the subversive, brought a disco (and ska) influence into PIL after all the punk wannabes made punk 'suck'. Fast forward to 2013, and Lydon's still a legend and Chic's Nile Rogers is topping the charts with er, Daft Punk. Circle of life continues for the originators..

  30. C.... ....

    Tell that to the Beegees.

  31. D.... R....

    disco isn't a genre....

  32. i.... ....

This will be the dance record to the apocalypse. Watch and see.

  33. C.... ....

I am just saying it doesn't sound like Disco in the slightest. At least the disco I have heard.

  34. G.... I....

Just like other @jcjordie21 said, i'm not being troll, just pointing out that the song, like others from metal box, it's influenced by disco, and it's shown especially in the drums and partially in the bass. Lydon admitted that he inspired on disco during the composition of metal box.
Finally, this songs and other of metal box prove that disco itself isn't bad, just needs a right twist to be something amazing.

  35. C.... ....

But it doesn't sound disco AT ALL!

  36. j.... c....

He's not being a troll it's genuinely considered a disco tune

  37. C.... ....

    Troll.

  38. G.... I....

one of the best disco tunes

  39. m.... ....

Never in the mood of the alzheimer disease.

  40. P.... D....

Always in the mood for this!

  41. o.... ....

30 years almost for me as well, wrecked my hearing on a tape walkman with this on auto reverse while being put to work on the ranch at a far too tender age.

  42. i.... ....

Easily one of PiL's greatest songs, up there with Public Image, Religion and Warrior. Rise and Low Life are both fucking awesome as well.

  43. K.... K....

They (Keith and Wobble) played their own reunion of sorts, it's actually kinda neat.

  44. a.... ....

    so dark so beautiful

  45. R.... ....

Agree 100% ... been that way for 30 years for me - amazing production choice and makes this one of my top 3 PIL tracks.

  46. s.... s....

The week this came out in the UK I asked a nice lady who was going there for a holiday to bring me a copy. She did. I have the first copy to touch north American shores. Now thats a memory!
However useless. But , having played it twice before I got the second edition it is in near perfect condition . Sonically , you cant believe the bass . nothing like a cd .

  47. B.... ....

@kildare97 BaseX, which used to be on Bachelor's Walk, if memory serves me. Back then I'd spend a few hours most Saturdays there, and up the stairs in Freebird on Grafton Street. Great little record shops with the dimmest light bulbs in Dublin.

  48. k.... ....

@Beelzebubbbbles Did u buy it up in dublin? If so whereabouts?

  49. L.... D....

    @Beelzebubbbbles ---:(, so bad!!

  50. B.... ....

anthony WILSON if you listen carefully to the track, the first part is recorded with a flat eq, then then whole thing is overdriven deliberately.
