Public Image Ltd. - Happy? Lyrics

All those oh! so trendy in their flapper and flair
Delinquent derelict, four walls and a square
Never should you worry about society
The best things in this life are never free
Treat this whole world to a cavalry rout
And when you've had enough of go, go, go and get out

Is everybody happy? Well are you happy?

Get a live-in lover, never leave her alone
The lifestyle is impressive, and you've moved up a tone
Circulate in circles, leave the center at home
And happy is this hero, never needing a throne

We're having a party-and everyone's welcome
And if you've got no friends-I'm sure we'll invent some
It's things and then it's places
Not people and their faces
It's things and then it's places
Not people and their faces. And are you happy?

Don't go near the water till you learn how to swim
The parodies and prophecies, cataclysm
Probably a proverb, like blood from a stone
And happy is this hero, never needing a throne

It's things and then it's places
Not people and their faces

  2. i.... ....

    Wowed. I'd missed this one.

  3. M.... B....

Honestly, This was probly the only other 80's album of their I liked besides Flowers of Romance, as far as a whole album of material. pretty underrated imo

  4. B.... B....

Is this the planned Parenthood anthem?

My girlfriend in college intrroduced me to this album...still love it to this day. John Lydon is and remains ahead of his time. I couldn't believe this was him at the time...then I dug into the PIL discography and discovered they worked with Steve Vai and took all kinds of chances. Johnny...if you're reading this...you're NOT rotten. You're something else, man. And I love it. I don't always understand it, but I always love it.

  13. P.... L....

Too pop and polished.. just revolted me vs first few albums of sparse repetitious dirges. The writing was not bad if stripped but too over produced and noisy to tell.

  14. M.... C....

Forgot how good this record is. ('Seattle' still reminds me of the I-5 Olive Street Offramp, tho)

  15. s.... ....

this was my first PIL album, I bought it used from a slummy flea market when I was still in high school around '91 or '92. this album just blew my mind. I already know johnny rotten from the sex pistol but that time I didnt know 'bout Pil. I was sooo Amazed how his music changed from pistol to Pil. I realized that he actually the first artist who started the beginning of all Alternative rock or Modern rock or the beginning of New wave or what so ever category shits people called

  16. S.... K....

This music sound so weird to my untrained ears in 1987. It's almost a genre on its own, and then with Lydons unconventional voice. It's forever great.

  17. i.... ....

John for president of the universe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was in 9th grade and my father drove us from south jersey to Canada to fish. We played this pulling a bass boat in a Ford F-150. W3rd.

  21. J.... R....

Love this album. Sounds so good loud. Perfect PIL. Stands up great to the test of time too (one of the best marks of worthwhile music). This one goes back a ways we me, to the late 80s. It brings back great times, into the present. Timeless fucking cool shit.

it seems dianne abbott along with her shrunken head on an expanding corpulence...has a deep unconscious bias against lydon owing to her inability to verbally deliver in parliament and elsewhere... watch her wig shift when shes in dialogue with john.... especially with this album the vocals on songs like 'angry' really have the impact most major party political wrecks can only fantasise about, nocturnally... eternally...

This attitude of learning, all the books you read , pretty parrot fashion , there s nothing in your head ,.,there are no easy answers , to elongated questions , try to keep an eye out , keep open to suggestions , now your understanding , don t be vegetating , all the doors are open , better off removing this educated stance , be brilliant , observing , while your young and got the chance , all the doors are open , open and revolving, ..

  43. w.... t....

  50. d.... o....

    some p.i.l. fans may say "metal box is the only good thing they ever did", but i love this version of the band just as much as the earlier band's shit;
john mcgeoch & lu edmonds were a fucking great guitar team, & the rhythm section were as funky as shit!
    & then, there is lydon;
i love this album, as well as "9"...

    d.... o....

    I just love them all!

  51. D.... D....

oh REALLY GOOGLE,POODLE PUDDLE,ISN'T IT ENOUGH THAT YOU HAVE TO PUT YOUR GODDAM LOUSY ADS ON EVERY PIECE OF MUSIC HERE,BUT IF IT'S A ALBUM,OOHH GEEE,WE GOTTA PUT EVEN MORE ADS IN ,GREED AND STUPIDITY

  57. L.... S....

    my Fav album

  58. T.... N....

I only like what I like but I couldn't stop listening to this. "Happy" released in 1987 somehow doesn't sound dated like a lot of stuff from the 80s. "Open and Revolving" and "Angry" - brilliant, and the rest of it well done.

  59. D.... X....

Saw this tour back in the day , they opened up for "New Order" it was a great show, I'll will never forget it, Ole Johnny rocked it.

    D.... X....

You are so Lucky to have seen that, I'm a HUGE Fan of both bands :)

    D.... X....

Oh trhe irony , The Sex Pistols were the ones who prompted Joy Division to for themselves ... some years later PIL opens for New Order , wth , I lived those times and didn´t even notice New Order get THAT big.

    D.... X....

Saw them 3 times, once on this tour it was odd seeing Johnny Rotten flailing around like a rock star in that pseudo-jester outfit (and looking like he was enjoying it) but it was a great show. And when they played at Coachella in 2010 they hadn't lost a step.

    D.... X....

How was the new order show?

  60. B.... R....

    Love Fat Chance Hotel

  61. w.... t....

also got to add thiss forgot all about this apparently lyden had operatic singing lessons for this LP to project his voice ... youj can reaaly hear the results too ... Great Stuff ..

  62. w.... t....

... Also ...the vinyl LP comes with inner sleeve lyrics ... which shows the poetic genious of john lyden ...love reading it as im listening to it

  63. w.... t....

saw em at manchester appollo on this tour visually one of best stage sets i ve ever seen ... anyone got footage of this albums tour please upload it ... not even many photos available really strange as it really was visually staggering ... really is an under played an unfotunatley overlooked album this and the previous years ALBUM album are BOTH terrific volumes of PiL ,,,

    John McGeoch @ 7:07

    J.... L....

    J.... L....

PIL had some really great musicians cant decide for the best line up

  68. c.... ....

great story victor PIl is the only band I like sober< I loved them since I was 12 And PIL gets better and better the older I get!!!

  69. d.... ....

think its not great as an american pop and think its ok thanx JL of PIL

  70. C.... F....

    Great album. Love it!

  71. h.... ....

the two singles from this album are just so good... great band of musicians here (tho the 12" version of The Body really takes it to another level)

  72. D.... 6....

    We want more!!!!!

  73. P.... ....

My fave PIL line-up. Although not as experimental as earlier incarnations - Alan Dias' bass playing was sublime, McGeochs guitar sound is brilliant and the songs are strong and well produced.

  74. P.... D....

    love it from magnog

  75. A.... C....

So good. Fresh as the day it was released.

  76. K.... T....

Where's the song "Happy"? It isn't on here. Maybe it's called differently. When I listened to it, it was called "Happy" though. I'll say again it's on here.

    K.... T....

@***** Thanks, I forgot :) Long time since I listened to it :)

    K.... T....

@***** o love like the 1st one minute of this song. Almost more than any punk rock.

    K.... T....

It's the first track on the next record "Nine".

  77. m.... m....

as a 80 s punk from SLC Utah i fucking love it

    m.... m....

    Perry and this dude? Yeah?

  78. m.... ....

Such an awesome album.. i bought it second hand at a fair back in the early 90's..it's kick-ass soundatmosphere makes it sound unique even in 2014...  genius musicians at work! now i only wish for a new P.I.L release :)

  79. V.... M....

When I was a Junkie....I fond a cassette of this album,..in an alley on a third night up and no cash.....I took it home and played it 3 weeks straight until I kicked,....and began my road to recovery./.something in the sonics and lyrics saved and sooth'd me....Thank you Forevermore Johnny Lydon and PIL

    V.... M....

    BEAUTIFUL

    V.... M....

    amazing

    V.... M....

Brilliant story, bruv. Best wishes to you.

    V.... M....

    @Allan Dias nice, mate....thank you

  80. p.... ....

I do believe that in hind sight, John McGeoch was the greatest guitarist of the punk era, from hearing and seeing him live with first Magazine in 78 to work with the Banshees in about 81, his body of work was inventive and quite astounding, the material with PIL was equally astounding.
Such a shame that talent stopped in 04 through his like of the bottle. John McGeoch 25/8/55 - 4/3/04 age just 48, RIP, sadly missed.

    p.... ....

@Vermillion 303 No need to be so touchy. My comment was in answer to your statement "I'd be interested to see any links to articles about John being an alcoholic". That's why I'm saying it to you. Really, you should try and chill out a bit. I wasn't being mean or nasty to you.

    p.... ....

Funny enough- I loved Pil as a lad and now as an "old man" I love them even more- but for vastly different reasons. Speaks a lot for the content of the music! I would have to agree about John McGeoch though -a  highly underrated musician.

    p.... ....

did you know him? freak...fuck,people are fucking weird.....sorry for your loss parasite....im sure hes up there in disnyland appreciating your concern for his battle with the bottle....celebrity cruising faggot.

    p.... ....

will relisten to his career - a PIL / banshees crossing of paths instantly made my ears prick up!

    p.... ....

@pervameg You're absolutely right. I love Johnny Marr & all the rest, but I think McGeoch was the best "post-punk" guitarist of all time. His work on the 3 Banshees albums alone was revolutionary. Especially "Juju". Really too bad that alcohol abuse took such a toll on him & cut his career short. R.I.P.

  81. b.... s....

HEY!!  I was looking at John's interviews done since his new bio came out  AND HE IS GOING TO TOUR AGAIN!!!
He tours all over, right?  I am in Nevada, USA, and I have to see him live!!

    b.... s....

It's not the same as it used to be. But still, you have to see him live to say that you have. This album is terrible compared to early PiL. He became a parody of himself unfortunately. And I am a big fan up to 1985...then it all went horribly wrong..Good luck and I hope you enjoy seeing him, if you haven't already done so...This is PiL Pop rubbish.

    b.... s....

Surely USA have Pil's back catalogue? 'This is PiL' was the last album. above par I guess but nothing major. Go to 'Flowers of Romance' for real PiL, and of course Metal Box. :)

    b.... s....

Badlands with P.I.L. would be be cool, yeah?

    b.... s....

+beth shadowen I'm going to see him next week!

    b.... s....

+beth shadowen PiL will be in Las Vegas, NV on November 25th.

  82. 6.... ....

Such a great album I discovered in High School back in the 80s, ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! I never bothered with any of their other albums.

    6.... ....

@Cap'n Buzz the first two minutes I'm sorry they catch me more than green day and a tread carefully sex pistols and Ramones.

    6.... ....

@61pwcc You should have "bothered"!!! But hey check them out!!! Great stuff!!!

    6.... ....

@61pwcc they're pretty consistent with john mcgeoch on guitar. they sounded a bit different before that so i recommend at least the stuff with john on guitar. you'll most likely love it.

    6.... ....

+61pwcc 9 is like a follow on from this. Worth checking out

    6.... ....

    Thanks...WILL DO!!

  83. C.... H....

why did i ever stop listening to this?!!   gonna have to go into my box of old CDs and dig this one up again.

    C.... H....

I did because they stopped making electronics that play cassette tapes...

    C.... H....

@Eva Terry - Try flea markets and eBay. You'll find plenty of good cassette hardware.

  84. R.... K....

Definitely firing on all cylinders on this one! This and PIL ALBUM my two favorites.

    R.... K....

    Dead on!

  85. B.... S....

    Poster?  Hmmm
As always PIL  and John are the best.  I agree that really good music is not promoted.  Only pop stars with no talent make it these days (And it helps to have big boobs)

    B.... S....

    Do you?

    B.... S....

+Beth Shadowen  Beth, I couldn't agree more! I am just getting into this PIL band for the 1st time. And reading JL new bio, after reading the 1st bio. I was so into Frank Zappa growing up, and he was always honest. JL is the same way, he isn't afraid to be himself.

    B.... S....

In the case of these names doesn't arrive to you, I recommand you Peter Hammill/Van Der Graaf Generator. Peter Hammill is genuise - not promoted. I've read that John Lydon have said that he loves all the stuff of Peter Hammill and considered his album "Nadir's Big Chance" as the fondation of punk in Europe. Peter Hammill is an extremly open-minded artist and all his albums are very differents. His most famous is "Pawn Hearts" that he did with his group Van Der Graaf Generator.

  86. R.... M....

I was lucky enouhg to live in London at the time it came out. I remember the very day I was comming up the stairs from a tube station and on the wall there it was, the question. I hate, The poster promoting this album, with one fucking question, ofcourse I knew it was them, the PIL, made me going on for the next 10 years! It's rediculous, but I felt as if only a few of us were asked. Others were simply unable to see the poster.

    R.... M....

    interesting story

  87. E.... ....

    my favorite PIL album.
