Protest The Hero - Plato's Tripartite Lyrics

I forgot to thank you for the blood you shed, and your obligatory
contribution to the community. Are you just dense or so fuckin’ inbred
you think that all is forgiven and all is forgotten? But forgive them of
nothing, despite their impunity. Oh how the system fails you completely
when monstrous children get treated so sweetly. The violence is praised,
the decision cemented (they seem like nice kids). Crimes go committed,
but never lamented (that doesn’t change what they did). That’s when
they lock up an innocent victim. The only thing that’s more broken
than her spirit is the system. They lock up femininity, infected with the
illusion that choice is free. You made your bed when you were born
in your bones, so lay back, sweetheart, in a body you only sometimes
own. Lay back upon cold concrete floors and rest your drunken soul.
What more could a lady ask for than to be treated like a hole? Oh how
the system fails you completely when monstrous children get treated
so sweetly. Standing before you in suit and tie, don’t they just look so
nice? Well-practiced tears come to their eyes, “I guess their remorse will
suffice.” That’s when they lock up your bones, and femininity infected
with the illusion that choice is free. Freedom is delicate, cracking under
abject catastrophe. Stronger than his prison bars are the bars around
her memory. It’s irrelevant, her relation to me. No one is innocent if they
go free. When we hand raise the beast, and the beast runs wild, we must
speak of our own involvement in the r ape of a child.

Protest The Hero Plato's Tripartite Comments
  1. T.... ....

I came here for Plato... where is the philosophy? *confused*

  2. A.... R....

Protest the hero is a badass band

  3. M.... Z....

Brutal!! de las mejores canciones que he escuchado hasta el momento, del panorama del metal moderno.

  4. P.... ....

"These are the sorts of things we'll say, I think, and in general that it's confusion of these elements in the soul, and straying from their proper roles, that constitute not only injustice but lack of restraint, cowardice, ignorance--in brief every sort of badness."

    -Plato, Republic: 444b

  5. J.... S....

Honestly one of my favorite PTH tracks. Everything about it shows the band at the top of their game. Being a guitarist, I greatly appreciate the guitar work and how everything was arranged musically. And those lyrics. God, just perfect.

  6. A.... B....

Then I read comments. .. lol

  7. A.... B....

Then I read comments. .. lol

  8. A.... B....

Best song on the album. This reminds me of the kezia days... but not unlike turn soonest to the sea... I can't seem too figure out the lyrics... I know the words... but what the hell is this song about?

    A.... B....

Turning a blind eye to shitty behavior and even rewarding it. And then complaining about all the 'children' that grow up to be monsters (shitty people) when we 'hand raise the beast, and the beast goes wild'. Blame yourself.

  9. T.... R....

    My new favorite band....!

  10. M.... P....

Few words about this particular part in the song. It's amazing what Rody's doing with his voice, that many musicians would've previously believed to be cliched, and slightly edgy whilst singing. He really nails the clenching his teeth whilst singing.

Just wanted to commend him even more than I currently am.

    D.... ....

    I couldn't agree more!

    D.... ....

One of my fav parts of the song

    D.... ....

Dot I absolutely love that part. Some people may not like it, but it reminds a bit of The Rev from A7X.

    D.... ....

probably the best part in the whole song

  17. L.... ....

One of their best songs so far imo

  19. c.... ....

I like Protest the Hero better when Rody isn't reciting SJW tumblrina bullshit in the whiniest, cringey tone possible.

    c.... ....

"Let’s talk about rights. Let’s talk about sexual orientation. Let’s
talk about you and an entire homophobic nation. Will you follow me
down? Can we not separate ourselves from such hate? Let’s sever the head
of the beast with the crown, let’s no longer participate. Will you
follow me down? Why won’t anyone stand up?
    "
Fear and Loathing in Laramie, from their debut EP. 2003, half a decade before Fortress

    c.... ....

"On a bed bound and gagged with culture, language, myth and law
from a wounded womb where flesh is scarred and raw
Our goddess gave birth to your god"

    Wretch from Fortress

    c.... ....

That you choose this song as the one to say this on is sad as well, given this is about a legitimately disgusting thing that really did happen. There is nothing preachy SJW about condemning the pardoning of rapists

    c.... ....

chibhatt24 if there is a better way to advertise that you're a bad person, I don't know it.

    c.... ....

You're not left at all. You use "tumblrina" to describe real concerns. You're a cypto facist.

  20. B.... C....

Pretty sure this song is about rape

    B.... C....

+Mooworks More specifically, it's about the case of Daisy Coleman

  21. G.... ....

It's taken me a few hundred times listening to this song to actually sit back and listen to what they're saying. On the composition side I think that this is one of the best songs on the album, but from a lyrical perspective the messages are so one-sided and not in any way representative of reality. It's as if they've just blindly accepted 3rd wave feminism's bullshit rhetoric and decided to nicely package all of it into a (albeit very good) song.

    G.... ....

+Auron530 My problem is not with whatever story they're telling. My problem is the language they're using.

    G.... ....

+Kaelan Rasputin "Yet there is a rape culture in some ways in terms of powerful people."
    Care to explain?

    G.... ....

Sorry that statement worded in such a stupid way my apologies. I didn't know what I was talking about. It was just that in this one specific example because the football players were respected they were allowed to go free after an apology. I'll delete that now actually I don't have enough evidence to claim such a thing. But yeah this case was bullshit and so their use of language is justified because it is about the specific example. I don't see it as a commentary on rape culture in general just on the specific story and specific system in the town where it occurred. Which is why I still enjoy the lyrics with the same knowledge you have.

    G.... ....

I don't disagree with you.  I think that songwriters such as Rody are so gifted in their ability to express things poetically it makes every song sound as though it's some giant prophetic commentary on society.  Prime example: remember how the music video for "Clarity" was originally received by fans?  Some people lost their minds ("I used to like this song until the video came out and I realized how stupid the lyrics were!").

Maybe the same pitfalls apply to my original comment.  I didn't really bother looking into what the song was actually about before taking what was really a simple and straightforward message and trying to extrapolate it to something larger and more complex.

    G.... ....

Though yet he football story is fucked up, it still seems they're taking it bigger and talking more about society, especially in the lines about locking up femininity, which as the op said, is total bullshit. But who really cares the song is fucking awesome

  22. R.... G....

Mojo mother just put every aspect of understanding this song into one comment.. If you cant put two and two together you may have not been made to do so lol... That being said there is an unlimited amount of analogies you can derive from there songs even with there being just one derived explanation...
That's just what happens when you mix a poetic lyrical genius like rody with the poetic intrumental genius of arif luke tim and well cant really account for the original drummer with this because of that whole percussion mix up that was happening with this album but moe is still a beast and i don't think they will ever find a better drummer...

    Long live protest...

    R.... G....

At rich. arjif isn't on this album

  23. S.... G....

    Yay for feminst metal

    S.... G....

    +Sadie Gallant just for metal...

    S.... G....

You don't have to be a feminist to find rape (especially the rape of a child) to be utterly abhorrent

  24. s.... a....

No matter how many times I look at the lyrics, I have no idea what they're trying to get across. Still awesome song though

    s.... a....

+Sadie Gallant You're so wrong, go back to tumblr.

    s.... a....

It's about the one story where football players were given drinks and drunken underage girls to do whatever they wanted to because in that city football players were praised as innocent

    s.... a....

I always feel like they're talking about the justice system.

    s.... a....

He's explaining the fucking song, you autist.

    s.... a....

Lmao no. It's not "female privilege" that people care if you're victim to a horrendous crime. You''re talking nothing but sexist drivel and skeptic MRA youtube talking points. Care about victims. False accusation is incredibly rare. Women aren't demons that just want to ruin men's lives with false accusations fuck off.

  25. k.... ....

Remembered this song after reading about Sam Ukwuachu. Piece of shit society.

  26. -.... ....

    I'm getting so many Eargasms.

  27. I.... ....

    ??@* hhuebuehu

  28. P.... R....

Saw them play this live last night. They fucking killed it.

  29. A.... U....

the ending to this song holy fucking shit it's so fucking beautiful
    (the acoustic bit)

    Canada wins!

    M.... ....

@Jay Lee Other way around. Hail the Villain(2003) got their name from Protest the Hero(1999) and fuck Hail the Villain.

    M.... ....

@Jay Lee Just throwing in my 2 cents.

    M.... ....

@zifee mayne pth started as happy go lucky

    M.... ....

Well their name was changed to Protest the Hero in 2002, Hail the Villain was in 2003 anyway so my point still proven i guess.

    M.... ....

Justin Bieber and Deadmau5. Now I'm about to get killed by fans of both, but it was worth it.

Hey, we're MY BREATHING HARMONY, an italian metalcore band!
Check out our latest video "These days are mine", and don't forget to leave a comment! I hope you w... http://youtu.be/G8vYyeeiMNs

  32. S.... ....

Rody Walker is honestly just as good as Danny Worsnop if not better!

    S.... ....

@McCorpsegrinder Actually almost all if not all of AA's early music is produced magic. Worsnop is a much better vocalist now, but back when the band started, he couldnt hit half the notes that were on record. If you listen hard, every vocal piece in AA's first two albums has hints or even blatant autotuning.

Still comparing the two is kinda stupid, as Worsnop still growls and screams, while Rody hasnt screamed since Fortress.

    S.... ....

    He has too.
A life embossed and Tilting against windmills are perfect examples of screaming post-fortress.

But good point about early AA

    S.... ....

Did you genuinely compare this band to AA?

    S.... ....

Thats not a comparison people make. You messed up xD

    S.... ....

to be honest hes way better than danny now danny is washed up and left asking for a shitty rock-ish band

  33. A.... ....

This is like Rush crossed with Yngwie...very cool!!!!

  34. d.... ....

Man, these lyrics. . . wow. Just wow.

    d.... ....

+Mojo Mother which is sad considering how horseshite "rape culture" actually is. rape is an abhorred crime and just randomly accusing a man of rape will ruin their lives. by no means do i justify the actions of that football team or anyone involved but to say we in this first wold live in a rape culture is blatantly incorrect.

    d.... ....

The culture part of it isn't accusing you of causing the rape, the song is addressing how many rape cases end with the culprits getting tiny sentences and the victim getting ostracised from her community because "she was probably asking for it". That's the culture of many places in our society.

    d.... ....

You're more statistically likely to be struck by lighting than falsely accused of rape, just throwin' that out there for all the folks who've got their fedoras on a little too tightly.

    d.... ....

have actually been accused of such and one of the following charges was first degree burglary. (which is a common charge for rape cases) That holds a life sentence here in California. I'm free today because it was false accusation. But you are right, its super rare. Rape culture is disgusting

    d.... ....

Deirdre Sullivan i just have to say this made me spit my drink. ty

  35. N.... ....

    2:07
I'll never stop loving the aggression and agony in his voice there

    N.... ....

    EXACTLY
That little throat catch there is just... guhhhhh
I may be extraordinarily straight, but Rody could have me any time he wanted, not gonna lie

    N.... ....

I still get fucking chills every time I listen to it, man!

    N.... ....

@NatiDreddd straight from the book of dave mustaine

    N.... ....

He sang that part through his teeth :p

    N.... ....

I just saw them in Edinburgh last night, guys, and they played Plato! I'll be uploading the live video so we can hear the beautiful aggressive tone live. AW YEAH.

    L.... C....

@Taylor Johnson i heard this song for the first time a year ago, and I am still going through tissues by the box.

    L.... C....

+Luca Cerbara Hell no, it's all about the energy and emotion he explodes with at 2:06.

  41. D.... ....

Definitely my favorite song on their new album, I can't get the lyrics out of my head!

  42. T.... R....

That's when they LOOOOOOCK UUUUUUUP, that's when they lock up your booones!

  43. J.... B....

I never imagined they're Canadian, they don't even apologize in this song. Not even once!

    J.... B....

,,you think that all is forgiven" sounds like pissed of canadian :D

    J.... B....

    You want forgiveness? Get religion.

    J.... B....

Joe BH lol sorry about that

  44. M.... L....

Best song ever written in 3/4. Hell, one of the best songs ever written period!

    M.... L....

@David Bluhm You can look at time signatuers in different ways, and most of the time change them around between various numbers and it will still fit. However, in the official tab book for Volition that i own, the majority of this song is tabbed out in 3/4. Yes, there are a few parts that are in 4/4, and that crazy shit in the middle varies alot between 5/4, 7/8 2/4 etc.

    M.... L....

    @Mattias Lundgren
    no, just no.

    M.... L....

@Chris Howard OK i give in, i guess Tim and Luke are wrong and this song is not in 3/4. But take a second and look at what happens if you double that shiet, and you get 6/8. But i guess one could argue the signatures have different "feels" or "grooves" i dunno, i think this is a pretty ridicilous discussion to have. I think that the song is in 3/4, and it's a fucking epic song regardless, so who cares.

    M.... L....

@Mattias Lundgren Doubling 3/4 does not give you 6/8 it gives you 6/4.... Quarter notes are still receiving the beat

    M.... L....

@Mattias Lundgren Yes sir i'm feeling a lot of 3/4 or 6/4 (however you want to perceive it) as well as some 4/4 throughout the song.

  45. B.... A....

You are* dunno what happened there

  46. B.... A....

@ periphery fanboy... Why do I think you're rody telling another joke?

  47. P.... F....

I can't believe they are from 15 minutes away from where I live.
There's a teacher at my high school who knew Rody (the vocalist) in high school, haha.

    P.... F....

whitby locals ayyy, i was i sinclair kid

  48. J.... C....

This song is freaking sick! Definetly top 3 of the album

  49. J.... d....

    I tripled that <3

  50. J.... M....

Man, I just could not get into A Life Embossed. I think it's the ONLY Protest song that I haven't liked. So much in fact, I deleted it off my itunes. Plato's Tpt however, genius.

  51. H.... D....

"When we hand raise the beast and the beast runs wild,
We should speak of our own involvement in the rape of a child" - Damn, son.

  52. M.... 1....

Thumbs down should be banned in this video. It's impossible to dislike this one.

  53. m.... ....

i dont know how to express myself but ......... OEIRNJE:KJLCSDJFCZNX: LCKJE I LOVE PROTEST

  54. F.... ....

That's when they LOCK UP. Lock up your bones.

    Second listen : Mist
Third listen : A Life Embossed

Just to let you know how this album is versatile, and awesome.

  57. J.... ....

i've changed my mind this is my new favourite song on volition it was mist.

  58. J.... L....

I've listened to this song like 4 times today <3
