Propagandhi - ...And We Thought That Nation-States Were A Bad Idea Lyrics

"Publicly subsidized! Privately profitable!"
The anthem of the upper-tier, puppeteer untouchable.
Focus a moment, nod in approval,
Bury our heads in the bar-codes of these neo-colonials.

Our former nemesis, the romance of the nation state,
Now plays fundraiser for a new brand power-concentrate.
Try again, but now we're confused; what is "class war"?
Is this class war? Yes, this is class war.

And I'm just a kid.
I can't believe I gotta worry about this kind of shit.
What a stupid world.

And it's beautiful,
No regard for principle.
What a stupid world.

Born, hired, disposed.
Where that job lands, everybody knows.
You can tell by the smile on the CEO,
Environmental restraints are about to go.

You can bet laws will be set
To ensure the benefit
Of unrestricted labour laws,
Kept in place by displaced government death squads.

They own us.
They own us.
Produce us.
Consume us.

They own us.
They own us.
Produce us.
Consume us.

Can you fucking believe?
What a stupid world.

Fuck this bullshit display of class-loyalties.
The media and "our" leaders wrap it all up in a flag, shit-rag, hooray.

Can't believe I was ever even mildly interested in this band. Music is traditionally and should be apolitical. The only time you see these cookie cutter liberal ideas inserted into music is in the punk genre (Propagandhi, Dead Kennedys, etc.") and rap. There's a difference between social commentary in music and political commentary. The Strokes have a song with a lyric "top 10 ideas for top 10 shows/Who's culture is this and does anybody know?" A great lyric, social commentary on America's declining and degenerate entertainment standards. Compare that to Propagandhi's "Fuck the Border" or some obscure rapper "Fuck Donald".

But here's the clincher. The #1 rule for music should be if it doesn't sound good, it isn't good. A lot of these political punk bands are forced into singing in this hardcore punk delivery, monotone, no discernible melody, just to fit their multisyllabic political words into so many bars. They have no regard for meter and flow. They essentially use music as a political platform at the cost of THE ACTUAL MUSIC.

I think the only time a band or artist has managed to juggle political commentary with good, melodious music, is NOFX on "War on Errorism". Keep the bullshit politics out of music. Shut up and sing, in other words.

    thijs verkest

Music is and has always been political. Just because you somehow only recently found out doesn't mean it traditionally wasn't political. It always has been. You either used to be oblivious about it or well listened to music that aligned more with your personal political view point.

    Frédérick Germain

You probably never heard about the anti-Vietnam war era rock. Political AND social criticism was very strong there.

Even litterature has been used as a mean of protest several times in history. Take for example, Molière in France. His writing contained subtle criticism against monarchy and religious influence.

Art (music included) will never stop having people that has something to say against politics and society and history has proven it several times.

Nation States are the culture of the Corporations and Neo-Liberalism, just as Theology and religious books are the culture of the Church. If you believe in your nation, then you believe that the biggest threat to you is workers in other lands and that your best friend is the most powerful person in your homeland, your boss. So, no, Nation States won't solve Capitalism.

  47. 2resist36

    "less talk more rock"

  57. Carlos Costa

This is a simplist way of thinking. The State and private corporations mostly work together to profit.

  58. Awake Today

You do not have to read the discussion, frankly, it is pretty civilized and well thought out for a youtube comment section. Do not know what else to tell you. The band obviously wants you to think about what they are saying.

  59. Awake Today

Also, I cannot understand how you can think that the US economy is not deregulated. There is some regulation, but it is very minimal, thanks to conservatives and blue dog democrats. However, after the last election, it appears that people are starting to demand this change.

As for the banks "owning us", they are a piece of the entire puzzle. The Federal Reserve is not the major problem. Things like Citizen's United, Shadow PACs and the mass media have a much large role.

  60. Awake Today

Well history shows otherwise, "Libertarianism" and the "Free Market" just simply do not work (or at least has not yet).

Fact of the matter is, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. It is absurd and unenthical that the US has the largest income disparity gap in the industrial world. Europe attempted to cut their way out of the global recession and now very well might "double dip".

The Fed is a whole other issue. It is an independent entity that must respond to congress.

  61. MrStevemur

@GeoffTube, corporations don't have any mandate to represent you. You may feel that your government isn't representing the will of its citizens well; that it's failing to fulfill its democratic mandate. I'd agree. But if you think you'd be better off in a system where all power is in private hands, and wealth makes right, then you're one of those people whose political philosophy makes no sense to me

  62. peopleshit144

    Propagandhi have the better messages.

  63. General chAOS

I Heartily disagree, and humbly advise that you should fuck off and die if you need someone to ask you nicely to listen to punk.

  64. Awake Today

The US technically does not have taxation without representation, and furthermore, we do have some "socialist" programs, but our economy is very deregulated. We are a Keynesian system that leans very much towards "free enterprise" and "capitalism". Most of Europe is also Keynesian, but they tend to implement far more "socialist" elements then we do.

To say the United States is a "socialist country" and has been for a long time is laughable no offense. We do not even have universal healthcare.

  65. Awake Today

Paying taxes are the price of admission in a civilized society... this song is about corporate control of many modern day nation states. Since the song was written it has only gotten worse.

Taxes are not fair, income disparity in the US is at an all time high and is the largest of any first world country. That is the real issue, not the fact that you have to pay some taxes. The ultra wealthy in most of Europe and North America do not pay anywhere near the amount they should.

  66. Tyler Durden

Entertaining and informative.....for those of you that actually give a shit

  67. cody pelka

What are you, a concerned parent? As if you wasted your time typing that thougt. LISTEN TO THE FUCKING MUSIC!!!

  68. ILikeTheThingsIDo

Especially considering the political nature of the song. It's not just music, it's also a message. Removing the message and the discussion of politics removes the entire point of the song.

  69. tolstoyleo

I love this band as they were made up in this album and in how to clean everything. Possibly some of the best lyrics ever written with a sound that made it all pleasant to digest

  70. Greenslime300

Actually, that's exactly how to get people to listen if it's punk.

  71. Dan Lazarus

Telling everyone "FUCK YOU ALL" followed by "LISTEN TO THE FUCKING MUSIC" is not a very good way to get people to listen to the music.

  72. Tyler Durden

what's in the glass jar? Is this a glass jar? Yes, it's a glass jar.

  73. ILikeTheThingsIDo

Really? That's what you focus on? Spelling? I know mine is generally impeccable but I avoid pointing out small errors especially I don't have an actual point to make.

  74. ILikeTheThingsIDo

Finally, I am by no means a socialist or a communist, I just enjoy discussing political theory. I dislike corporate power, certainly, because I have either no or little influence over it, unlike with government. I can voice my concerns about legal government actions that I don't like. I just have to put up with legal corporate actions I don't like. Considering they have a habit of writing the laws that apply to them, this can be quite a lot.

  75. ILikeTheThingsIDo

Socialism is an economic system separate from the government system. You can have a socialistic economy without a communist dictatorship, it's just subject to change at the feelings of the people, which is definitely best. Communism leads to brutal authoritarianism. No one has tried socialism without communism. Untested hypothesis can't be said to be false.

Mixed economies are the standard and are a lot more stable than what we had pre-Great Depression. Less booms and busts, more steady growth.

  76. ILikeTheThingsIDo

Fascism promotes private ownership. Granted, they only retain ownership at the whim of the state, as it is in any totalitarian regime, but private ownership remains.

Socialism is against human nature to an extent, but it's hardly irrational. If you're having trouble accomplishing a task, there are two logical responses. 1.) Train on your own to accomplish it or 2.) Get help from someone else, not always an option, but certainly worth considering in a lot of cases since it's quite a bit easier.

  77. Leftovervictim1991

@neosoc Just stating facts. socialism has always led to brutal authoritarianism. When government takes away your right to own property and makes everyone economically equal, that leads to fascism. Socialism is irrational. We should give capitalism a try, the US hasn't been capitalist in 100 years. The problems in our society is because of government intervention, not the free flow of goods and services. Free-markets beat the hell out of socialism anyday.

  78. Leftovervictim1991

@815Sox @815Sox @815Sox the USA is not actually Capitalist at all, we have something called Corporatism, where big corporations are in bed with the givernment and make deals with politicians to enforce Regulations that only help the big corporations gain monopolies and crushes the little businesses, capitalism is actually a great thing but that word has been raped of all meaning. Capitalism just means that all interactions in the market place (free flow of goods and services) are voluntary.

  79. Himinow Davis

"And yes, I recognize the irony that the very system I oppose affords me the luxury of biting the hand that feeds. But that’s exactly why privileged fucks like me should feel obliged to whine and kick and scream- until everyone has everything they need." - Propagandhi

Don't kid yourself, the biggest threat to world peace is the United States of America, because the fed cartel is running the show.
