Absolutely love this song! Usually I would prefer live performances, but here I think the record version outperformes the live versions I've heard/seen. Maybe because of BJ Wilsons drums?

Folks are entitled to like Lynrd Skynrd, but in my opinion they're borderline racist (esp the line dissing Neil Young). Procol Harum isn't to everyone's taste, but IMO this song is better than anything Lynrd ever did. But I like Brit prog rock (generally, there are exceptions) and generally don"t like Southern rock. BTW, I'm from New Jersey.

Somebody on here said "unbeatable". Really, really? Let's come back to earth . I'm sorry, but if this was a performance on American idol the simon days, simon would have torn their asses up cause regardless the strong topic and title , it does not automatically mean it's a good song. Really listen to this , it's junior league, it's absolutely awful. It should have never been accepted as the final product to keep on the record. Just awful singing, all other instrument parts are the most basic playing style there is, what would be taught to your kid at his or her music lessons.

+Garrett Schupp - Procol Harum didn't need an American Idol TV show or any other Tv show to be famous and accepted world wide since 1966 and to be associated with so many world-class musicians as The Beatles, Eric Clapton and symphony orchestras etc...Junior league? Try and play it mister. Especially the piano or drums (of which legendary jazz drummer Buddy Rich regarded BJ Wilson as one of the best he ever heard). Go ahead...I'll wait.

I never heard this tune until today and, to chuck my tuppence-worth in, I really liked the tune, playing and singing. I was never keen on prog and much preferred glam and punk in the 70s. I always lumped Procul Harum in with the prog lot but this sounds nothing like the usual suspects. It's about 20 years ahead of the game. Sounds like a Bowie 90s track or something. Love the singer's English vowels too. The "most basic playing style there is"? Whatever technical level it's at, it serves the song perfectly. Whole load of soul. Never liked those prog guys boring me with their scales at all. It's rock, not maths.

Budd, you're a musical putz. Stick to Britney Spears ... heard she's looking for a drummer.

This song means a lot to me, because I heard it on the radio back in 1976 when I was just 15 years old and full of the 'flu and feeling literally half-dead - but this tune kept my spirits up! Always loved Procol Harum anyway :)

if the weakest man was as strong as Samson it would only imply that the rest of the players of this game of reality that we play are as strong as Samson or stronger, so it wouldn't really make a huge difference in business or ransom situations because we'd still make things by making alliances with other players. The weakest man needs to play better :P .. but yeah, it sometimes feels bad losing.

The very first drum fill from BJ Wilson, right before any vocals, gives the song a relentless but restless feel

It's almost a shame they had such success with Whiter Shade of Pale. That's just one of many great songs by this band. If ever there was a band whose music needed a revival this band is it. Awesome stuff.

Soulfully real.

When rock music is discussed as an art form this song and band must be mentioned. Truly a work of art by great musicians who could tell a story with their music, lyrics and performance. Lots of great bands during this period no doubt -- but, Procol Harum? In a class of their own.

Keith Reid’s lyrics were so important to their work. Lyrics are as important as the music. Consider Burt Bacharach. The lyrics of Hal David made his songs heart tugging.

Although the melody and Gary Brooker´s voice are superb, this is the BJ Wilson show! Just fantastic!

Even with Trower gone this band is simply superb. I am a drummer, BJ Wilson was one hell of a percussionist. There are drummers & then there is BJ Wilson. Years ago on a TV show the great Buddy Rich criticized some rock drummers but he said he liked Chicago's Danny Seraphine & then Rich said this guy BJ something. Audience members shouted Procol Harum. Everyone familiar with PH knew it was BJ Wilson. A proud moment.

Yes! Lol! Seraphine "the fastest!" And BJ "the octopussiest!" Buddy Rich -his own quality.

A personal favorite. I love the words, lyrics, performance. The steel guitar is a nice touch.

B.J. Wilson best performance with PH.and arguably one of the best ever drums performance in a rock song.Yes B.J. Wilson rules !

Because the music is so gorgeous, and what about B.J. Wilson's drumming and Gary's voice?

Probably my favorite PH album, topping even Broken Barricades and Home, and this track is a big reason why, although every cut is at least good. Such majestic melancholy, and Keith Reid's words are still as true today.

I saw Procol Harum few days ago. They were abolsutely amazing and "As strong as Samson" is so beautiful live.

I love this melody, chorus and words. Evergreen of the 70's.
