Procol Harum - As Strong As Samson Lyrics

Psychiatrists and Lawyers destroying mankind
Drivin' 'em crazy...and stealing 'em blind
Bankers and Brokers ruling the world
Storing the silver and hoarding the gold
Ain't no use in preachers preaching
When they don't know what they're teaching
The weakest man be strong as Samson
When you're being held to ransom
Famine and hardship in true living colour
Constant reminders...the plight of our brother
Daily starvation our diet of news
Fed to the teeth with a barrage of views
Ain't no use in preachers preaching
When they don't know what they're teaching
The weakest man be strong as Samson
When you're being held to ransom
Black men and white men, and Arabs and Jews
Causing congestion and filling the queues
Fighting for freedom the truth and the word
Fighting the war for the end of the world
Ain't no use in preachers preaching
When they don't know what they're teaching
Weakest man be strong as Samson
When you're being held to ransom

  34. J.... O....

    B. J. Wilson, aka "the Octopus" due to his position on the kit, was easy top 5 Rock & Roll drummers ever, if I may be so bold.

    J.... O....

Just be bold! I agree 100% with you!
Ciao and long lives B.J. Wilson, immortal drummer.

    J.... O....

His drumming on A Salty Dog alone should secure him a place in the drummers hall of fame, IMO,

    J.... O....

fantastic the drum in this song

    J.... O....

Joseph Obenauer true about BJ. He had real class his rolls enhanced by the glistening Chris Thomas production is one of the rare examples of more can be more. Had the chance if seeing them live on that tour...truly magic

    J.... O....

So good that Jimmy Page wanted him for Led Zeppelin.

  35. S.... ....

Fighting  The War For The End Of The World

    S.... ....

    How stupid, how sad.

  36. M.... O....

I was born in England but left years ago. I married a Texan woman, worked in Africa, Nepal, Sordid Arabia and the USA. I am a Canadian citizen and after O Canada, this song is as near as I have to a National Anthem.

    M.... O....

You wild man, Martin. God' blessings...

  37. M.... F....

Absolutely love this song! Usually I would prefer live performances, but here I think the record version outperformes the live versions I've heard/seen. Maybe because of BJ Wilsons drums?

    M.... F....

I miss BJ, what a great musician.

  38. M.... J....

"Ain't no use in preachers preaching when they don't know what they're teaching"

  39. E.... V....

What's scary is this song is even more relevant today than the day it was recorded. Long live Procol Harum!

    E.... V....

Yep. I think 'political correctness' was invented by psychiatrists and lawyers.

    E.... V....

I ratted on SUE? She was a boy the whole time?

    E.... V....

The Hammond organsound with Matthew Fisher is also wonderful..!!

    E.... V....

Glad to hear my thoughts repeated! ;)

  40. d.... ....

I suppose the great intro of this song was cut off. This song starts quite suddenly

    d.... ....

+rycardmartinez Actually it starts just like that.

  41. E.... L....

ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BANDS OF THE SIXTIES AND A WHITER SHADE OF PALE REMAINS ONE OF THE BEST SLOWS EVER !!!

  44. n.... ....

The opening 4 lines of the song remain as true as ever.

  45. M.... J....

I love this melody, something heavenly in it.

    M.... J....

what a fine looking dog head

  46. h.... ....

I have loved this Song over 30 years <3

  47. G.... S....

this song was released 1974, so for 1974 I'd say a good song was "sweet home Alabama" . You see what I'm saying, this song is not even on the same planet as that. The vocals in this song are absolutely horrendous.

    G.... S....

"this song was released 1974, so for 1974 I'd say a good song was "sweet home Alabama" "
what substances are you on? One good song came out in the same year and what does that have to do with anything? Sorry, but music clearly isn't your strong point mate

    G.... S....

    Exotic Birds and Fruits 1975

    G.... S....

    You got it bass ackwards

    G.... S....

Folks are entitled to like Lynrd Skynrd, but in my opinion they're borderline racist (esp the line dissing Neil Young). Procol Harum isn't to everyone's taste, but IMO this song is better than anything Lynrd ever did. But I like Brit prog rock (generally, there are exceptions) and generally don"t like Southern rock. BTW, I'm from New Jersey.

  48. G.... S....

    Same era ?

  49. G.... S....

I sure could have used some drugs to listen to this, it's obvious the producers and engineers were waisted.

    G.... S....

Says the man who can't spell "wasted":-D

  50. G.... S....

Maybe were not listening to the same song ?

  51. A.... D....

If Simon should say this this is childish music,  he'd surely be absolutely drunk!!! This a glory song from one the finets rock bands ever!!! GREAT TUNE!!!!!!!!!!! (Sorry for my english, I'm portuguese, but if you britains don't love this song someting is wrong, perhaps you're deaf!!!!!!!!)

  52. G.... S....

Somebody on here said "unbeatable". Really, really? Let's come back to earth . I'm sorry, but if this was a performance on American idol the simon days, simon would have torn their asses up cause regardless the strong topic and title , it does not automatically mean it's a good song. Really listen to this , it's junior league, it's absolutely awful. It should have never been accepted as the final product to keep on the record. Just awful singing, all other instrument parts are the most basic playing style there is, what would be taught to your kid at his or her music lessons.

    G.... S....

stupid ;l what' s count is the extreme ambient created

    G.... S....

This man hadn't a clue....absolute rubbish about a classic song

    G.... S....

+Garrett Schupp - Procol Harum didn't need an American Idol TV show or any other Tv show to be famous and accepted world wide since 1966 and to be associated with so many world-class musicians as The Beatles, Eric Clapton and symphony orchestras etc...Junior league? Try and play it mister. Especially the piano or drums (of which legendary jazz drummer Buddy Rich regarded BJ Wilson as one of the best he ever heard). Go ahead...I'll wait.

    G.... S....

I never heard this tune until today and, to chuck my tuppence-worth in, I really liked the tune, playing and singing. I was never keen on prog and much preferred glam and punk in the 70s. I always lumped Procul Harum in with the prog lot but this sounds nothing like the usual suspects. It's about 20 years ahead of the game. Sounds like a Bowie 90s track or something. Love the singer's English vowels too. The "most basic playing style there is"? Whatever technical level it's at, it serves the song perfectly. Whole load of soul. Never liked those prog guys boring me with their scales at all. It's rock, not maths.

    G.... S....

Budd, you're a musical putz. Stick to Britney Spears ... heard she's looking for a drummer.

  53. D.... C....

    Unbeatable!

  54. A.... D....

    Great music!!!!!Great band!!!!Great Gary Brooker!!!!

    A.... D....

Antonio Dias grande Gary Brooker d'accordo con te!

  55. s.... ....

    When will we learn?

  56. T.... ....

Brilliant. First time I've heard it and I loved it.

  57. p.... ....

    no r&r HoF needed!

  58. a.... ....

This song means a lot to me, because I heard it on the radio back in 1976 when I was just 15 years old and full of the 'flu and feeling literally half-dead - but this tune kept my spirits up! Always loved Procol Harum anyway :)

  59. L.... ....

and we aren't made equal, so deal with it! (but keep making these nice songs regardless)

  60. L.... ....

    * make things happen = play the game

  61. L.... ....

if the weakest man was as strong as Samson it would only imply that the rest of the players of this game of reality that we play are as strong as Samson or stronger, so it wouldn't really make a huge difference in business or ransom situations because we'd still make things by making alliances with other players. The weakest man needs to play better :P .. but yeah, it sometimes feels bad losing.

  62. v.... ....

The very first drum fill from BJ Wilson, right before any vocals, gives the song a relentless but restless feel

  63. E.... Z....

it sounds so true even today! fantastic song

  64. C.... W....

    What a wonderful song!!!

  65. m.... ....

this sounds very much like pink floyds "lost for words" btw...
this of course being the earlier.. love procol harum!!
    and pink floyd :)

  66. h.... ....

I have never heard more beautiful composing, this is the most beautiful song I have heard, and I heard it 30 years ago, first time.

  67. m.... ....

thats what she said!. certainly one of the greatest drummers of all time!
May he rest in peace!! :´(

  68. s.... ....

It's almost a shame they had such success with Whiter Shade of Pale. That's just one of many great songs by this band. If ever there was a band whose music needed a revival this band is it. Awesome stuff.

  69. L.... R....

    Soulfully real.

  70. J.... L....

When rock music is discussed as an art form this song and band must be mentioned. Truly a work of art by great musicians who could tell a story with their music, lyrics and performance. Lots of great bands during this period no doubt -- but, Procol Harum? In a class of their own.

    J.... L....

John LaStrada So very true. Just as beautiful as ever!

    J.... L....

Keith Reid’s lyrics were so important to their work. Lyrics are as important as the music. Consider Burt Bacharach. The lyrics of Hal David made his songs heart tugging.

  71. s.... ....

One of the best songs of all time, period.

  72. s.... ....

Never ever forget that Keith Reid wrote all the lyrics for these fantastic songs

  73. s.... ....

The greatest Procol song ever. BJ, Gary, Keith, Chris please somewhere out there there must be a live version on tape because I saw them play this live in Santa Monica so it has to be there.

    s.... ....

There are a few live versions ..incl one in a reggae style

  74. e.... ....

Barrie James Wilson. Can't stop listening to this and mourning his loss.

  75. e.... ....

Wow I didn't know that. There will never be another BJ.

  76. s.... ....

Great song from a very fine Album!!

  77. s.... ....

Astonishing, demolishing brain song . Quite not human ;Capture Megalomania at his best .a pure Gem !!

  83. S.... S....

  85. E.... ....

WOW THIS BRINGS BACK A LOT OF GOOD MEMORIES !!! I RENTED THIS ALBUM AT THE LIBRARY BACK IN THE SEVENTIES. I A BIG FAN OF THEM AND THE MOODY BLUES !!!!!!! <3 MY OTHER FAV GROUPS ARE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA , ALAN PARSONS PROJECT AND MANY OTHER GREAT GROUPS OF THAT ERA....

  87. s.... ....

    @stowbury

  88. s.... ....

    @johnnypoker46

  89. s.... ....

    classic, just classic

  90. P.... L....

Although the melody and Gary Brooker´s voice are superb, this is the BJ Wilson show! Just fantastic!

  91. J.... L....

Even with Trower gone this band is simply superb. I am a drummer, BJ Wilson was one hell of a percussionist. There are drummers & then there is BJ Wilson. Years ago on a TV show the great Buddy Rich criticized some rock drummers but he said he liked Chicago's Danny Seraphine & then Rich said this guy BJ something. Audience members shouted Procol Harum. Everyone familiar with PH knew it was BJ Wilson. A proud moment.

    J.... L....

Yes! Lol! Seraphine "the fastest!" And BJ "the octopussiest!" Buddy Rich -his own quality.

  92. W.... R....

A personal favorite. I love the words, lyrics, performance. The steel guitar is a nice touch.

  93. s.... ....

B.J. Wilson best performance with PH.and arguably one of the best ever drums performance in a rock song.Yes B.J. Wilson rules !

  94. K.... M....

To bad most young people dont listen to this kind of songs any more.

  95. F.... C....

    @valentynesuite
Because the music is so gorgeous, and what about B.J. Wilson's drumming and Gary's voice?

  96. A.... M....

Probably my favorite PH album, topping even Broken Barricades and Home, and this track is a big reason why, although every cut is at least good. Such majestic melancholy, and Keith Reid's words are still as true today.

  97. b.... ....

    Amazing! BJ Wilson rules!!

  98. C.... ....

I saw Procol Harum few days ago. They were abolsutely amazing and "As strong as Samson" is so beautiful live.

  99. M.... ....

I love this melody, chorus and words. Evergreen of the 70's.
