Proclaimers, The - What School? Lyrics

I like dogs and I like people
Especially the Scottish kind
But Scottish dogs have an in-built advantage
Over Scottish humankind

A wagging tail
And a little wet nose
Can find new love
Or avoid potential foes

But in this small ancient nation
We gather information
In slower ways
And worser ways
Some do appraise by using this phrase

"What school did you go to?"
Sounds like
"Where did you spend your teenage days?"
But "what school did you go to?"
Doesn't mean what it says

Plant and Page wrote "A Stairway To Heaven"
I don't like rock but that's genius
And in that song Percy sings "Sometimes words have two meanings"
My God, he didn't know how right he was

Now I know he's a big Wolves fan
But does he favour rebel songs
Or marching flute bands?
On the west side of this country
To stop it getting funky
As they extend the hand
They'll say like Kissinger or Talleyrand

"What school did you go to?"
Sounds like
"Where did you spend your teenage days?"
But "what school did you go to?"
Doesn't mean what it says

Let's hear it for the dogs
Sniffin lickin
Let's hear it for the dogs
Sniffin lickin
Sniffin lickin
Sniffin lickin
Sniffin lickin
Sniffin lickin
Sniffin lickin

"What school did you go to?"
Sounds like
"Where did you spend your teenage days?"
But "what school did you go to?"
Doesn't mean what it says

  1. A.... M....

is it weird that this song reminds me of my best friend???

  2. F.... M....

Wonder Proclaimers, as always do them. Thank you.

  3. D.... B....

Please explain to a Brazilian fan what means the chorus? I think is about the social of family, asking "where do you came from?". Am I right?

    D.... B....

No, it is a question about religion - Catholic or Protestant. Sadly, still an issue in Scotland.

    D.... B....

Danilo Borges you are correct...mihuyase osakin

  4. M.... D....

    Brilliant song

  5. T.... ....

West of Scotland born and proud. been lucky enough to travel a fair but whenever I meet a fellow "West Coaster" its a matter of time before this subject rears its ugly wee tartan heed, its usually laughed off, but none the less its a wee dance we have to go through. Great odd wee country

    T.... ....

I don't think it has anything to do with 'being Scottish' and even less to do with being a 'West Coaster'.......I think its more a social class 'thing'. Its exactly the same thing people all over the country ask, and I have travelled a bit myself...

  6. M.... G....

    Lovely!

  7. M.... D....

That song only applies to one side of the West coast, the "other side" are all inclusive.

Oh, you Caledonian cuties! I missed you at Gawsworth Hall because I was in my native America - tragedy!

    M.... P....

    You were in America?

    M.... P....

I was alluding to the Proclaimers' hit Letter from America and indicating myself as an American. The very thought that I would set foot on those shores and not see your beautiful face is plain silly. Also, how was your b-day?

    M.... P....

It felt a lot like my last couple of birthdays. 😉. I was actually on the road meeting with clients but we had a nice family dinner when I got back. Xoxoxox

  12. b.... ....

Thank you Craig and Charlie, you always bring us joy!

  13. S.... R....

That was the one and only question I was asked at my very first interview as a 16 year old "What school did you go to?" Terrible this bigotry is still so rife in our country.
