Proclaimers, The - Letter From America Lyrics
When you go will you send back
A letter from America?
Take a look up the railtrack
From Miami to Canada
Broke off from my work the other day
All the blood that flowed away
Across the ocean to the second chance
I wonder how it got on when it reached the promised land?
When you go will you send back
A letter from America?
Take a look up the railtrack
From Miami to Canada
I've looked at the ocean
The way you felt the day you sailed
From Wester Ross to Nova Scotia
We should have held you
We should have told you
But you know our sense of timing
We always wait too long
When you go will you send back
A letter from America?
Take a look up the railtrack
From Miami to Canada
Lochaber no more
Sutherland no more
Lewis no more
Skye no more
[3x]
I wonder my blood
Will you ever return
To help us kick the life back
To a dying mutual friend
Do we not love her?
I think we all claim we love her
Do we have to roam the world
To prove how much it hurts?
When you go will you send back
A letter from America?
Take a look up the railtrack
From Miami to Canada
Bathgate no more
Linwood no more
Methil no more
Irvine no more.
[3x]
Bathgate no more
Linwood no more
Methil no more
Lochaber no more.

Takes influence from the trad song Lochaber no More I think
Being Scottish and young now is honestly amazing and god awful the stupid donk music is just horrible and I’m glad that people have made it big from Scotland and still talk about Scotland like in this song they mention Irvine witch is the place where I was born and this make me so happy
Oh the song changed as I was typing but I was talking about letter from America
Funny how upbeat and catchy the song is despite it being about one of the biggest tragedies in Scottish history
It's why it's brilliant, something many Scots connected with because of what happened back then.
Least we got an incredible song out of it, no dispute about that.
This song helped me change my life.
The Immigrant Song.
This is a nice song
Iggy Brows yeah it is
Do people really get the underlying message that this song screams out....all about Scottish industries dying and people struggling as a result. Catchy but .....
shut up debby downer
Aye I've lived in England which is good, but every time I hear this, it's tears tripping doon the puss. Fantastic song, sunshine on leith makes me greet even more, God bless Charlie and Craig.
When this song first arrived on the popular music scene it was quite interesting to hear it sung re: 'a letter from USA' in a Scottish dialect English different from a lot of songs then sung usually in American accent English. The Proclaimers then actually sang this almost acappella or without any backing music, nor instruments -their own voices singing are very talented in their own way.

Was at a "Fairwell" party for a friend who was going to work in America for a year and (after a few drinks) we were all singing this as loud as possible, along with other Scottish ditties. Sure it's freezing, always raining and there's always an oncoming storm, but fuck it, I love this country and I can't imagine being anywhere else.
Greetings from an Englishman in America! Love this song

Love this song xx bring back proclaimers!!!!! U never hear them on the radio :(
A definite No as of today and I’m so glad we all stand still united. As the first man on the moon said: From up here we see no borders.
poverty and inequality are invisible from space, they are akin from borders and prevent the poor and needy crossing into a fairer more equitable Scotland...which is why we will Never give up the fight for Scottish Independence.
Take a luke... with that gargantuan cranium. It lukes like spootnik.
Oh shit! no more Bathgate? Fuke !
Lmfao the words are spelt the same you freak, pronounced different. You're just spelling wrong not sounding anymore Scottish
@spankijL ha ha
@Bayo1A (The Loch Arbour no more, etc) is about Scotland being helpless to prevent Westminster (Margret Thatcher) who was hugely unpopular in Scotland from destroying the industry within Scotland crippling it and causing mass unemployment.
P.S Vote Yes in September
Alba gu brath!
+Bradley Booth Did you listen to the lyrics, its about how the Scots built America and in return in the 1960's America plundered ours. When Government funding ran out so did the Americans, seriously if it was about Margaret Thatcher it would have been called Letter to Margaret Thatcher, You ought to have tried growing up in the 1970's under successive failed Labour governments then maybe you would appreciate the works of the Iron Lady.
no its all about the highland clearances
No the works quoted all closed in Margaret Thatcher's reign. This is a pro-Scottish and anti-Thatcher song. That is the history of it, how Westminster (not the English workers, they have always been shafted as much as the Scots) has broken Scotland time and again, in the Highland Clearances and the 1980's de-industrialisation and our people have had time and again to travel abroad to find a better life
Leslie Wilson Appreciate Maggie Thatcher ? Are you having a laugh? The Miners have shitloads to thank her for.
I was always told it was about Scottish emigration to America
makes me feel young again and again, what a great band. midnight in Dublin having a proclaiming night. sing on forever boys
Take a look up the rail track....
from Miami to Canada, its surreal to see all the name places named after the places here. Not only in Scotland, but the whole of the UK
Fuck England go scotland
its "take A Luuuuukkkkeee..."
1:19 From WHERE to Nova Scotia? Because it sounds like he said Westeros.
Wester Ross
Wester Ross, its a part of Ross which is part of the Scottish Highlands. As opposed to Easter Ross
Drellistenstomusic Haha I thought they said Westeros too
Same 😂
They still make mine
Great fucking song
I went to see the proclaimers last Saturday! Xxx
nova scotia!
No, that's you.
I would like to point out this is one of there friends or lovers becuase at the start they sing when you go will you send back a letter from amairica
love the bhoys. been doon south for a long time. hh tae aw tims oot ther.
It's spelt Auchtermuchty :)
This song is about immigrating to the usa, the scots came here to your country to find work, they sing of the small towns, hills, etc., that they will miss, "Skye no more, etc", when they leave their home. You need to go there to see the most beautiful country in the world. Check out the views of Skye. These boys came from a small village in Scotland, "Oughtermuckty". Sorry if I spelled it wrong.
Immigrants from Ireland and Scotland always miss their homeland.
It's about immigrating to America. My Grandmother came from Skye to Nova Scotia and then eventually Toronto in 1926. My great Aunt her sister went to Michigan.
Maggie thatcher also shut down all the work in escocia, this is why we had to immigrate, ding dong the wicked witch is dead #voteyes
Auchtermuchty in Fife
