Prine, John - Wedding Bells / Let's Turn Back The Years Lyrics

I got the invitation that you sent me,
You wanted me to see you change your name
I couldn't stand to see you wed another
But dear I hope you're happy just the same

I planned a little cottage in the valley,
I even bought that little band of gold
I thought some day I'd place it on your finger,
But now the future looks so dark and cold

Wedding bells are ringing in the chapel
That should be ringing now for you and me
Down the aisle with someone else you're walking
Those wedding bells with never ring for me

Darling, let's turn back the years
And go back to yesterday
Let's pretend that time has stopped
And I didn't go away

We had our love to make us happy
Love wasn't meant to bring us tears
Love like ours should never die
So, darling, let's turn back the years

I fancy that I see a bunch of roses
A blossom from and orange tree in your hair
While the organ plays "I Love You Truly,"
Just let me pretend that I am there

Wedding bells are ringing in the chapel
That should be ringing now for you and me
Down the aisle with someone else you're walking
Those wedding bells with never ring for me
Those wedding bells with never ring for me

Prine, John Wedding Bells / Let's Turn Back The Years Comments
  1. j.... h....

Two of the very finest singer songwriters working in America today.

  2. K.... C....

This is not a pretty, happy ,song......but Wedding bells is a classic. JP is a songsmith but Hank was much darker

  3. J.... R....

John Prine is a much better poet and songwriter than Bob Dylan, by far. Until his cancer, he was a much better singer, as well, but now he's still at least as good a singer. Dylan's songs are amateurish next to Prine's. I guess ol' Bob just has a better publicist.

  4. A.... B....

    AWESOME

  5. c.... ....

The reason why I dropped being a full time successful pedal steel guitarist after 25 years is today's music is NO LONGER like this at all. The Satanic west coast lawyers and artists have ruined everything country and folk.

  6. a.... ....

the piano playing on this is sensational!

  7. J.... W....

Yes I know it was Hank Williams's song but it is beautiful I wish they song music like this today but people don't know how

  8. J.... W....

Yes what a beautiful pretty song I Wish I song music like this today other people today printed printed

These are the Ones who continue to wrest us up...

  19. J.... A....

    Thank you Mr. John Prine.

  20. t.... g....

A New York Music critic i knew said he was Americas blue collar Keats and Shelley but John Prine never used 10 words when one would do ...and it worked beautifully.

    t.... g....

    Ha! Good reprise Eugene.

  22. f.... s....

  23. G.... L....

Love John so down to earth.

  24. f.... ....

    Superb. Brilliant.

  25. P.... B....

This song sounds a bit old fashioned to me, didn't really enjoy it.

    P.... B....

This was what country was like before the young pretenders chimed in.

    P.... B....

thats exactly why most of us listen to greats like john, what you hear is what it is, like it was intended to be. i can't remember the last time i listened to a radio or watched the ass kissing awards shows. i hate being so old and having to deal with all the aches and pains and the loss of so many family members and so many friends, but i thank God every day for the era i was born in. i've watched so many great artists get started and become legends. i'm not trying to pick at you personally, but todays generation has no concept of what a joy life can be, and how many real artists have come and gone. thanks so much ame746 for posting this. and those that don't know about john, look up some history and see what kind of friend and person he was, the tragedy and pain he overcame, and continued to perform

  26. F.... A....

  46. J.... M....

    Perfect. Just perfect.
I have adored this guy since 1972
Never even cared for country til him.
I opened my mind & my heart to great songs I never would've held still to listen to, because of him. I'm very sad to read he is divorcing, I hope it's not true

    J.... M....

prine isn't country... he's prine... nothing like it in the world !!

    J.... M....

Never thought of Prine as country. Always thought of him as singer-songwriter listening music. Crosses all genres.

    J.... M....

+Cactass Dupree Prine is country, traditional country (real country), not that rap country they play now days.

  47. l.... t....

  48. J.... H....

I can relate to this!!!Thank you!

  49. C.... B....

    So good, thank you

  50. B.... ....

Usually JP prefers to sing his own songs but has a knack of choosing some songs by others artists that suites JP's style.

This duo of songs were actually recorded by Hank Williams and has been attributed to Hank as the writer however Wedding Bells was written by Claude Boone and Darling lets turn back the years has been attributed to Hank Williams Senior.

    Hope this helps

  51. J.... K....

You have to listen John sing Speed of the Sound of Lonelyiness from his John Prime Live on you tube. Man that song he wrote and sang is one of the best of all time. He sings it live with his soon to be ex-wife who is playing the bass next to him. Kinda my life story so maybe I feel that way but take a listen to it and let me know what you think.

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL..JOHN PRINE HAS IMPROVED THE ORIGINAL HANK WILLIAMS VERSION

  69. t.... ....

I think John and Lucinda are great singers. These old songs that Hank William Sr. made legendary are two of my all time favorites. Personally, I feel that the songs would have been even better if they had harmonized with each other. I read a remark by a songwriter who said any good song that has two people singing it should have harmony in it. I agree with that. My sis and I sang both of these songs back in the 70's when we sang professionally in our area. . Thanks for posting - Paula
