Prine, John - Rocky Mountain Time Lyrics

The station was empty
The trains were all gone
I reached in my pocket
And I wanted for dawn

[Chorus:]
The clock played drums
And I hummed the sax
And the wind whistled down
The railroad tracks
Hey three for a quarter
One for a dime
I'll bet it's tomorrow
By Rocky Mountain time

I walked in the restaurant
For something to do
The waitress yelled at me
And so did the food
And the water taste funny
When you're far from your home
But it's only the thirsty
That hunger to roam

[Chorus]

We'll build us a castle on Main Street
And pretend that we're down on the farm
Hell, we'll hold out as long as we have to
Then we'll twist off each other's arm

Christ I'm so mixed up and lonely
I can't even make friends with my brain
I'm too young to be where I'm going
But I'm too old to go back again

The station was empty
The trains were all gone
I reached in my pocket
And I wanted for dawn

[Chorus]

  3. R.... M....

I'd like to see him take a song, let's say like Garden Party by Ricky Nelson and do a John Prine on it and see what kind of masterpiece he'd do to it.

  4. H.... 2....

Happy new year from the Rocky Mountains!

  5. P.... D....

    On dirait Dylan...

  6. P.... G....

Long ago in a little mountain town up in the Sierra, a guy named Redwood Black sang this song to me, and I fell in love.

We'll build us a castle on main street, and pretend that we're down on the farm, then we'll hold on as long as we have to, then we'll' twist off each others arms.... Exactly how I'm feeling right now. Exactly.

when I was 19 at a campsite there were people there playing guitars. they said any requests? I said anything John prine..they said "who" I was mortified. named a dozen of his most popular and nothing.!! this is the best song writer ever. my childhood was nothing without his music. God bless!!

The best songwriter of all time. I've never seen someone so often find beauty in the ordinary, and make it extraordinary. Love this man!

  13. B.... C....

I thank you for sharing. John is good

  14. S.... R....

he sounds much more like early Dylan on his second album compared to his first

    S.... R....

+Simon Robeyns, on the surface but there are so many subtle country and bluegrass touches - dobro, steel guitar, mandolin - that make more in those traditions than folky.

    S.... R....

+RobotBoy71 i ment his singing in perticular, he's really got that early dylan way of pronouncing the words and holding on to a tone, hard to explain. Not to say he did this to copy him or anything

    S.... R....

+Simon Robeyns, That makes sense for me. Thanks for clarifying.

  15. D.... ....

Thank you so much for posting this song. Used to have it on 8 track lol

  16. G.... C....

I just convince myself that I'm really baked, and then I sit blissfully silent.

  17. S.... T....

I mean, he wrote Hello In There when he was just a young guy. Ya gotta wonder, how does a 20 year old know what old people think feel. Way ahead of his time is right.

  18. S.... ....

Is the same thing that i m thinking now !!! So long!

  19. D.... C....

Too old to go back again, I've covered this song all over the world as I travel

  20. D.... E....

@MrEclecticity I dont get it...... all i said was that it sounds like Bob Dylan...At the time, i had really convinced myself that it really was Bob Dylan, maybe i was just really baked...

  21. M.... ....

@MrCharlieturtle The question that you raise in me is - Is writing before googling more or less of a crime than speaking before thinking?

  22. 4.... ....

I didn't realize it 20 years ago. But John was way (WAY) ahead of his time. That's what brings me here today. just had to hear John ... again.

  23. D.... E....

This sounds like it really could be Bob Dylan singing this...I think it is...

  24. e.... c....

thank you Gretchen wherever you may be....

  25. D.... G....

A great story teller singing about life .

  26. s.... ....

bobby dylan learned much from this man, how could i have lived 32 years without knowing the greatness of john prine?????

  27. B.... S....

Love this album! My favorite by John Prine.
