Prine, John - Illegal Smile Lyrics

When I woke up this morning, things were lookin' bad
Seem like total silence was the only friend I had
Bowl of oatmeal tried to stare me down... and won
And it was twelve o'clock before I realized
That I was havin'... no fun

[Chorus:]
But fortunately I have the key to escape reality
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
No I'm just tryin' to have me some fun

Last time I checked my bankroll,
It was gettin' thin
Sometimes it seems like the bottom
Is the only place I've been
I Chased a rainbow down a one-way street... dead end
And all my friends turned out to be insurance salesmen

[Chorus]

Well, I sat down in my closet with all my overalls
Tryin' to get away
From all the ears inside my walls
I dreamed the police heard
Everything I thought... what then?
Well I went to court
And the judge's name was Hoffman

Ah but fortunately I have the key to escape reality
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
No I'm just tryin' to have me some fun
Well done, hot dog bun, my sister's a nun

[On the 1997 LIVE ON TOUR Prine ends the song with:]
Well done, son of a gun,
Hot dog bun,
Attilla the Hun,
My sister-in-law is an Irish nun

Got my joint ready now for tomorrow night's State of the Union speech (2-4-2020); if one (or more?) of the members of Congress should go berserk, I want a front seat; don't want to see any violence.... just comeuppance. Ain't it great to be alive?

  2. S.... S....

    Happy time's

  3. K.... E....

Congratulations on your Lifetime Grammy John. You have 'lit' my life since 1971

I'm not sure why this new gen is overlooking John Prine. I thought they liked the greats? I wanna hear a John Prine Mashup with Ice Cube or Rihanna or someone like that.

  6. f.... ....

The first time I ever heard of John Prine was when I heard this song while living in Alaska in 1995. I was 28, suicidally depressed and just hanging on. It made me laugh and spoke to me. It seemed like the person in the song was the same way. I didn't understand the real meaning of the song then. I love John Prine, his music and poetry.

  7. a.... ....

What means Hoffman , the judges name?

    a.... ....

    Abby Hoffman ??????

    a.... ....

Reading all the comments, I realize a lot of people had dads with great taste in music!! Mine as well, Thank you daddy for introducing me to John Prine!

  10. J.... B....

My Aunt Katie, currently on her death bed, showed me this tune and Mr. Prine as a teenager. I'll never forget that. As I sit here with a tear in my eye and some smoke on my lips, I'll never forget those times.

  11. N.... ....

What a funny and well crafted song , I've worn out a couple of copies of his greatest hits .. Mr. Prine is a treasure.. A great composer and wordsmith..

  14. b.... ....

Not only did you upload this, you gave a wonderful gift by listed each musician involved. Long, long ago I was such a fan. You also gave me a memory that made me smile. Thank you so much. Oh, percussionist Heywood Bishop was wrongly named in Prine’s album.

  16. K.... E....

He talking bout weed now that Im older 😂or em beams

    K.... E....

In the book that came with the Anthology CDs he said that it wasn't.
Prine explains that... the album opener "Illegal Smile" was "not about smokin’ dope. It was more about how, ever since I was a child, I had this view of the world where I can find myself smiling at stuff nobody else was smiling at. But it was such a good anthem for dope smokers that I didn’t want to stop every time I played it and make a disclaimer.

  17. P.... ....

I love this song so much...

  18. D.... P....

  23. K.... R....

i miss when things were simple, and we all had time.

  24. D.... J....

First heard this when it came out in '71 and no one had ever heard of him. Kris Kristofferson took a chance and promoted him - i loved Kris so I gave John a chance. I've wore out a vinyl, a cassette and I'm workin' on wearing out a cd! :D

  25. K.... R....

Always makes me happy when I feel hopeless.

  26. P.... ....

Gotta say this. You are a piece of shit, but you can sing. I don’t like your music enough to listen if you support abortion. Fuck you, asshole.

  27. z.... 0....

Why he said “it don’t “ and not “it doesn’t”?!

    z.... 0....

    Because he can.

I've heard the man's name for years from my music friends when I lived in the midwest, but I never really delved into his songs. I'm a pro musician playing originals and covers at local restaurants and bars. Within the last month, two older gentlemen who didnt know each other insisted that I learn their favorite John Prine song. Strange coincidence as I haven't heard anyone mention the man's name in ten years.

  36. R.... R....

    Man, I'm stone as hell
    With a illegal smile
    Don't tell anyone!

  49. I.... S....

    I love this song

  50. P.... W....

This song (originally) is about smiling like a child; for no 'big reason' and wholeheartedly. Consuming dope (and other drugs) reflects the prosthetic attempt to reach this state in a society where smiling without reason becomes illegal. So this song is not about dope. It is about not needing dope to feel happy.
Of course it will be interpreted based on subjective experience and milieu(as every song); nevertheless it is important to keep the original message above the surface.

"In an 2013 interview, John Prine set the record straight
-I have to confess, the song was not about smokin’ dope. It was more about how, ever since I was a child, I had this view of the world where I can find myself smiling at stuff nobody else was smiling at. But it was such a good anthem for dope smokers that I didn’t want to stop every time I played it and make a disclaimer.
As much as many wanted to see it – the “illegal smile” was not about dope."

  54. D.... H....

Best friend's older brother used to come home from logging camp with an arm full of albums every 2 weeks. This one got worn right out down in the basement at his parent's house, playing snooker and stoking the wood stove. SHeesh!
