Prine, John - Grandpa Was A Carpenter Lyrics

Grandpa wore his suit to dinner
Nearly every day
No particular reason
He just dressed that way
Brown necktie and a matching vest
And both his wingtip shoes
He built a closet on our back porch
And put a penny in a burned out fuse.

[Chorus:]
Grandpa was a carpenter
He built houses stores and banks
Chain smoked Camel cigarettes
And hammered nails in planks
He was level on the level
And shaved even every door
And voted for Eisenhower
'Cause Lincoln won the war.

Well, he used to sing me
"Blood on the Saddle"
And rock me on his knee
And let me listen to radio
Before we got TV
Well, he'd drive to church on Sunday
And take me with him too!
Stained glass in every window
Hearing aids in every pew.

[Chorus]

Now my grandma was a teacher
Went to school in Bowling Green
Traded in a milking cow
For a Singer sewing machine
She called her husband "Mister"
And walked real tall and pride
And used to buy me comic books
After grandpa died.

[Chorus]

@#comeondaddyletsplay and I never gave a dam about car's and gun's as long as they were shooting and as long as they would run. I guess it's a good thing I never had a son.

    huh, i don't get this

    J.... ....

The whole song describes my Okie granddad, although he dressed casually. His father, next door, dressed in a 3 piece suit and Stetson and sat in a rocking chair on his porch and cackled watching my twin and I wrestle on his lawn. This was Southern Oklahoma in the '60s and '70s. You're a generation (or maybe two) too young. I'm sure there will be a John Prine chronicling my OK Boomer generation. My two sons only barely knew my grandfather.

    J.... ....

Comment: it can be hot as hell in Southern Oklahoma in summer without airconditioning, but great-grand still wore a 3 piece suit, bolo tie, and Stetson. For some reason; it still seems incredible to me.

    J.... ....

Great-gran wore boots, though, not wing-tip shoes. When his feet swelled, he cut a long parallel slice in them to "fit", which Granddad thought was both funny and typical. He offered to buy greatgrand new boots that fit his feet and greatgrand said his feet would probably unswell soon enough, or he might die first.

    J.... ....

(Important context was that great gran was 94 at that point of the feet swelling in the boots.)
