Hip Hop had taken over, the smear campaign had begun and the whosepapers and ragazines were kicking him to the curb.
The music was still beautiful.
Prince was just saying that he had to be true to himself musically and he didn’t follow trends and because of that, they wouldn’t let him in.

They called him crazy and the media was perpetrating it. (So did he sometimes) They called him nuts so that other artists wouldn’t listen to his songs of freedom.
Radio stations couldn’t play him even if they wanted to or they’d anger the record companies.
To this day, people still have it in their heads that his post 80’s stuff was all trash. Liars.
Now, people are listening to it and they’re surprised. The lucky ones(like me) stuck around for the whole ride.

This was a message to the Warner Bros execs. He was in a fight with Warner Bros for control of his music. Warner Bros produced the movie Free Willy a couple of years prior to this album. He was saying if I came back as Willy the killer whale would you listen to me then. In other words I'm not gonna let you control me and my music. They tried to control Prince. How beautiful do the words have to be because it's not up to your standards and not marketable. Prince was good at putting hidden messages in his songs. Pure genius.

People say that because Jackson sold more records and had more influence. But when it comes to pure musical talent Jackson is nowhere near Prince's league. Jackson sold more because he had a more wholesome image. Prince was an edgier artist who said provocative things and wasnt as family friendly.
