Prince - Deconstruction Lyrics
One after the other, the Banished Ones fled as they watched from the distance the destruction of the Digital Garden. With no more fruit 2 bear from its trees, the Haze was finally broken. With the rains came the awareness that NEVER AGAIN WOULD ANYONE EVER LAY CLAIM 2 THE TREASURES OF THE RAINBOW CHILDREN! As though awakened from a dream, the Muse opened her eyes.this time as Queen.

Prince Deconstruction Comments
Outstanding breakdown. Unprecedented really
Marvelous 👌
Wow, that's a difficult one. Well done!
Yo this is dope
This teaches us nothing. It just makes it more oblique and esoteric.
Thanks for making me watch 98% of the video before telling me you had no guitar track, asshat.
I never knew they taught music classes at Chipotle!
Sound goes out at 6:08.
The guy is wrong SIGN OF THE TIMES USES the RX5 DRUM MACHINE. Not the Linn Drum or anything else. That was used on previous prince tracks like "When doves cry".
Already lost. I don't get how you got everything separated. Probably need the piece that is missing. I've always wanted to do these types of mixes but have no clue how to do them. So frustrated right now.
Hi Joe, sorry to hear your frustrated... When Ski deconstructs these tracks he recreates all of the sounds himself, so it's not a case of having the completed track and separating it out as much as creating each element one by one and re-building the track as close to the original as possible. To separate them he has listened to the track intently and drawn them out by ear. It takes a lot of skill but hopefully by watching you can learn about the track's composition.
I hope that helps - if I've misunderstood your comment please let us know.
This was dope ski very unassuming and transparent...Hey could you check out my work? I don't want to leave a link here but if you look in my about section it's there thanks alot!!!
Thank you, excellent done
Really instructive , thanks very much !
Nicely Articulated.
0:31 audio problems solved
Ski's videos set the benchmark, for me, in terms of modern music production. Love and learn and get inspired by every single one of them! Shame about that brief glitch here, but as far as I could tell all we missed was the recording of the snare
Amazing
No audio
Another interesting fact about this song is that he released it without a video! He wanted to make the statement that video was becoming more important than the songs. But MTV wanted to play the song on their station so they created the video we see today. Later on Warner Bros. took it on as the official video so they could add it to VHS compilations of Prince videos.
Too much basics, to less attention to details --- for such a great song.
This is really nice
Incredible ! Really impressive work and very educative video. And again, about Prince's work : simplicity is beauty
I think Prince thought he was the Messiah. For real. Listen to his words and how he says them, especially, I would die 4 U... and others...
There was a strong spiritual/religious element to a lot of his music...I don't know that he thought *he* was the Messiah, though :)
Sometimes I wonder if Jesus where to come back, what would a modern messiah actually be like...
Amazing! Thank you! Entirely coooool!!!!
it was 35000 dollars in 1982 actually
if not mistaken that's when he bought it
great job!
Prince was a genius, and Sign O' the Times are one of my favorite tracks. Thanks for sharing:)
where did a chunk of the audio go?
I was a 16 kid playing in essentially a prince cover band when this came out. I would have freaked out hearing this deconstruction. now nearly 30 years later, it's at my fingertips. wow. thanks.
That bassline is the coolest ever!
This seems more like reconstruction than deconstruction. And in creative terms more like decomposition than composition.
Adam Miller ha! Funny 😭
I don't think that was a joke.
onesong2001 yeah I get that
AWESOME, WHAT A NEAT CONCEPT! I
What this video shows me is the importance of being able to play real instruments. Without the guitar (and Prince's great voice) this just sounds bland. Hey kids, learn to sing and play an instrument first, then learn this. After all, even Skrillex can play guitar.
Yep. Spoonbill also started on the drums at 12, as did i, Esquir3...
you sound really old
He came as close as he possibly could. I think it's great 👍
Sunday was usually Prince's personal day for making deeper/serious songs (like this)
I don't think the LM-1 was used on this track. The snare is obviously not from the LM-1 anyway.
" I want to be"
For everyone asking the drum machine on this song is a Yamaha RX-5
Yamaha RX-5
fed Finally someone gets it right
Walshy the musician
No he is wrong Prince used the YAMAHA RX5 on Sign of the times. I have recreated this rhythm track perfectly on it. The machine was also used on Cameos word up and Madonna's La isla bonita.
Really interesting video, shame the audio cuts out so we don't know how the beats were done...
I know.. pretty gutted about that.. will see what we can do on Monday morning :)
@Ski Oakenfull I take it you couldn't do anything about it then?
Or did you mean next Monday morning? ;-)
Damnnn... SKIIII!! you make this look too easy!! but its not ;((( Thanks for another brilliant deconstruction! :)
Ski... Please deconstruct one of your personal tracks like your Kloud 9 remix... they are goldmines for anyone who wants to produce soulful house.
Incredible how oldschool musicians made such great songs with such few elements ... lots of 80s and 90s dance music used no more than 15 elements, meanwhile if you use less than 20 in a track today people say you're being lazy lol
I guess having 200.000 lush vst sounds available at your fingertips takes many away from "keep it simple, stupid!" ;)
8 tracks on an Amiga. Nothing else needed. Lol
was sputtering like Mr Bean checking my settings on the phone and my lil JBL speaker when the audio nipped out for a smoke.. . . .
fantastic!
Thank you for this. 💜
Here's a sign of the times; $35,000 1987 dollars to buy what a few hundred (computer, DAW, plugin) would run you today. Who says the future's gonna suck? May we have more deconstructions, Ski?
I have searched but it's a genre of sameness. The lack of imagination used to create it is equalled by the lack of skill required to program it, the lack of melody, chords and the dreadful sounds that are used in this diabolical genre,
I thank you in advance for entertaining me with your hat eating. Please be sure to post the link so I can watch :-)
Trust me... you don't want to see a video of me eating anything. you'd never eat again.
Dawgfather - Even if the equipment cost a dollar, is easier, quicker or more convenient doesn't mean anything. It still could sound like crap and have little substance like a lot of the music today. And THAT is definitely a sign of the times.
DAWgfather
Yes but what lacks to today is personality in music. The means is there. The unique creativity of 30 years ago is gone.

You're a legend Ski! Sending love from LA.
You should come across the Bristol to do a live event... Many people would come along and appreciate it... try get eats everything to show is how he produces... make sure ski is there to show us those soulful chords.
Would love to come to Bristol. I remember playing a gig on The Thekla with my first band back in the day!
There is no audio from 6:10 onwards for a few minutes...
Apologies for the technical error.. It will be trimmed in due course!
@Ski Oakenfull thanks, just want to say I appreciate these breakdowns you do. very interesting... the Kraftwerk one was good too.
"It will be trimmed in due course!" Yeah, of course that never happened. Still a great informative video, thanks.
