I personally think its a travesty this album didn't get the release it deserved. It slams the funk hard and yet has the weirdness he would later channel more so on Lovesexy. You can hear its done around the same time. I love this and Lovesexy. In a way its a shame they were not released together as a double album. Dark and light.
I think it would have been a bit awkward as a double album. This definitely deserves a posthumous release at the very least, its too good not to be heard.

It didn't come out in '86. It was released in '94, almost a decade later.
It was legally released in 94. But the original release date was 1987 or 88. But yeah, it’s an 80s album.

R R either this or Dirty Mind is his best album. I find Dirty Mind overall easier to listen from beginning to end, but the Black Album has more diverse styles, that sometimes work out perfect (bob george) or not (rock hard in a funky place).
