Primus - American Life Lyrics

In a town in southernmost Sicily
Lived a family too proud to be poor
In the year that fever took father away
They hastened for American shores
Now a mother and her son are standing in line
It's a cold day on Ellis Isle
And they look to the Statue of Liberty
For the boy we have American Life

Ong is a Laotian refugee
He works in the audio trade
The smoke from flux is filling his lungs
He's earning minimum wage
Spending spare time down on
San Pablo ave
Once a week gets a woman for the night
And he writes home tales of prosperity
For the boy we have American Life

Bob is an unemployed veteran
Born and bred in the South Bronx
He's living off the streets down in east L.A.
Residing in a cardboard box
Now he plays a little quit and he has a small dog
Searching for aluminum cans
And he hold on tight to his dignity
He was born into American Life

Don't forget his other bands he's been playing with. Before this was a band called sausage and after Primus he was with John Lennon's son in the Claypool Lennon delirium. A few more in between like the Frog Brigade and I think through one more

The song is classically ironic, as most of their songs are. The glory of American life, to an immigrant, is the idealism of the American dream. Looking for greener grass and fantasizing of how much better life will be in America. Only to get here and realise life is no better here than where you came from. Life is just as cold and bleak and hopless in America as anywhere else. People work for minimum wage and live in poverty. For those who were born here and gave their lives to protect the glory of American life, they have been tossed away like garbage and disrespected by their country man. The veteran being only loved by his dog , as he searches for respect, looking through trash to make a living independently and show his value to society by being self sufficient, while trying to preserve his sense of self worth to himself.

People have hardons for the baseline which is fair, but the story in this song is truth. It continues to be the truth to this day even for people who haven't gone to American shores - I live in a neighboring country and this reflects a sad reality. Les and Primus expose the sad reality of history and the modern era

    b.... p....

    Which is?

  36. R.... M....

YouTube better stop playin with me n give this song a million plus views

  40. T.... D....

YES. Yes.... The bassline is good. It's Les Claypool. The bassline is ALWAYS good. But I feel that half of the people here don't grasp the content of the lyrics.

    T.... D....

How's the smell of your own ass this morning?

  41. J.... 7....

    I love this song

  42. D.... S....

  45. C.... V....

R.I.P to those trying to practice this bassline

    C.... V....

Just a bunch of hammer ons

    C.... V....

Its not that hard compared to other pieces

    C.... V....

Not trying to brag but I can play this with my earlobe

    C.... V....

look up a video or tab, sounds a lot more complex than it is. pretty good song for beginners looking to play les's basslines.

    C.... V....

    @Russell Sullivan
Me too! But to be fair, when I took up the bass in 1992, being left-handed in most areas, and ambidextrous in others, I could've picked left OR right-handed bass, back then, but I chose right-handed, for simplicity's sake, so I wouldn't have to "special order" lefty basses, or even worse, string a right-handed bass "upside down" a-La-Jimi Hendricks Guitar-style!
Anyhow, this bass line does sound *MUCH* more complicated than it actually is --ESPECIALLY compared many other Les Claypool baselines... Same with "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver"... It *sounds* way harder than it actually is.

  46. E.... M....

Yo before watching this an American propaganda ad ft John cena played lol ironic

  47. S.... J....

Primus sucks way too much, man.
    ...

  57. H.... M....

To suck or to not suck that is Primus

  58. L.... M....

A unique and undervalued group has given way to a genre that did not exist before with the brilliant bassist of Claypool, very sophisticated, simply brilliant his bass lines .... unique after all the rest .... very copious by many groups as limp bizkit, Korn and too many others ... Les Claypool is a genius .... GO !!!

  59. M.... ....

Hell of a lot of noise from a 3 piece

  60. M.... B....

  75. J.... C....

    PRIMUS SUCKS!!!!! :D

  76. D.... ....

Primus is so underrated, it's a really good band and it's shoved under the carpet now in the new age of music, especially this song, it's sad, and this song is really fun to play on bass as well

  77. A.... H....

For those of you wondering he uses a strum on the D and G strings and does a hammer on the D string hitting 3 and 5 in succession

  78. K.... B....

    This fucking bass

  79. D.... P....

I've just plain taken too much acid in my 51 years - Primus is making sense. no other explanation.

  80. p.... ....

Sailing The Seas Of "Chedder" Cheese to be specific.

  81. B.... M....

  87. J.... H....

    Love people do you Tri

  88. F.... D....

Somebody had to point out to me that this song was featured on True Detective, now I feel like I have to turn in my fan card for both for not recognizing it right away. How many other folks listening to this had their families come from a little town in Sicily?

  89. M.... S....

    DIG THAT BASS..

  90. D.... ....

    Primus sucks.
And lord, oh lord, is it an exquisite kind of suck.

  91. c.... o....

    Shibbaddy bop-bop da-diddly ding da-doo

  92. t.... ....

Primus should only make live recordings: their version of this song on Bonnaroo 2011 (also on youtube) is soooo much better....

  93. V.... ....

Whether your a fan or not, you have to admit the bass is catchy

  94. b.... ....

    True Detective........ Rust and Marty.........

    b.... ....

That first season has such great music. Even the lackluster second season had a really good soundtrack. Wonder if Pizzolatto chose this sound 'cause it speaks to him as a product of immigration.

  95. T.... W....

Its like im just having a super acid trip. One of them where im super self aware of my being and the world around me. and its cheesy

  96. L.... ....

The part that starts at 0:43 is pretty nice
