There have been many wonderful comments given to this cut, justifiably so. Like many others, I feel this take on the song is much more powerful than the Persuaders, and done with such a beautiful minimalist arrangement. And though I like Annie Lenox's version, it is not as raw and emotional as this. Bravo to Chrissie and her fellow players, bravo!

When Otis heard Aretha' s version of 'Respect', he said "That girl just stole that song away". I suspect the Persuaders' songwriter said the same thing when he/she heard this... No one doubted Ms Hynde as a songwriter. Withbthus song she removed any doubt as a singer as well.

Never realised The Pretenders did a version of this. Chrissie puts her individual stamp on it and deserved praise for that BUT for sheer soul, emotion and vocal delivery the original cannot be beaten. This is an out and out heart-rending soul/r&b written song and looses some of that in the stripped back version here. Love the Pretenders though

Chrissie and the guys did a great job with this song! I remember the version done in the early 70's by The Persuaders. I actually like this version better! Great lyrics. I've always thought so. IMO this single song had alot to do with any musically redeeming qualities the 80s may have had.

It's rare I prefer a cover to the original but the Pretenders do this beautifully.
