Pretenders, The - Legalise Me Lyrics
Legalise me
Oh, I want the legal right to be me
Only me
Legalise me
Bail me, jail me
Pharmaceutically
I was sleeping like a baby in bed
When I woke up to a voice in my head
There's no room here, try down the road is what I said
I'm just a farmer and I grow marijuana
Oh, baby doll
Could you tell that I liked that
Oh, baby doll
Up and down
Legalise me
Oh, I gotta, gotta, gotta feel free
Really free
Legalise me
Wake me, shake me
If they're gonna come and take me
Make it legally, yeah
I've been campaigning for the rights of the meek
Well, I've been holed up in a tree most of the week
Hey, sir, your crush boxes are starting to leak
They're saying never
But we'll wait here forever
And ever and ever and ever and ever and ever
Oh, baby doll
Could you tell that I liked that
Oh, baby doll
We're gonna rattle your combinations
Up and down
And if I wanna shake my hair in the sun
Don't try to flail me for offending anyone
I don't take prozac and I'll never own a gun
I'm just a farmer
But, I swear I'd never harm her
Oh, baby doll
Yeah
We're gonna rattle your combinations, baby

Pretenders, The Legalise Me Comments
Happy Birthday today(September 7) to Chrissie Hynde. Cheers!
Prop 64 go!!
Jeff Beck and Chrissie Hynde of Pretenders fame are long-time friends. Some years ago she invited the guitarist to play on one of the tunes of the Viva Amor album. Here’s what she had to say some years back in Goldmine magazine:
Jeff Beck plays on ‘Legalize Me’. Describe the session.
Well, I’ve known Jeff for some years, and he’s someone who is my guitar hero. Meeting him was such a huge thrill for me. We were going to do some charity work over 10 years ago, and since then we’ve remained very friendly. And I sort of introduced him to a guy who has become one of his best friends, so that was always good. The three of us go out together and do things.
We’ve always had different schedules and been working on other projects. But when I heard ‘Legalize Me’ – I’m just such a fan of his rock guitar playing because he’s the greatest rock guitar player. And in his own stuff he’s done the last 20 years, he certainly has gone on to Planet Beck – where no other guitar player has ever gone. And he doesn’t use a pick! What I always wanted to do was pull him down to Planet Earth and get him to play rock guitar. For him that might be a little elementary, but for me, that’s where my head is.
So when we did ‘Legalize Me’, I thought, maybe I can get him to play the solo. So I called him and told him I had a rock track. ‘Do you want to come down?’ ‘Yeah’ So I sort of cleared the studio out ‘cause I didn’t want him to feel in any way any kind of scrutiny by people who were crying and stuff, because he’s so fuckin’ amazing. I just had Stephen Hague and the engineer, Richard Norris, who works with Stephen. And Jeff pulls up in his Corvette, in this English studio, RAK Studio, where he probably recorded ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining’ (with Mickie Most), and he walked into the studio. Everyone was very calm, great. ‘Thanks for coming.’
We played the track four times and he had a couple passes on it and got into it a bit. Once he started playing, I thought, ‘This is great. I’m gonna have him sit right next to me so I can watch him play.’ But I couldn’t lift my eyes. I couldn’t look up. I was so in awe. It was so absolutely stupendous when he was playing. I was sort of immobilized. At one point, I caught Stephen Hague’s glance from across the room and he too had this sort of stunned impression. You know, Jeff did about five takes. We said, ‘I guess we’ve got it,’ when he finished playing. ‘Great. Thanks for coming down.’ He said, ‘Okay, talk to you later.’ And as soon as the studio door shut, we all yelled, ‘Fuck! Oh my God!’ We were screaming. The engineer had never heard anything like it. We were shaking in disbelief, but when Jeff was there… Okay, Jeff. Thanks for coming in. Talk to you later.’
Love the Pretenders.
@spacepatrolman I don't think so. It seems to be a song that is more about a woman's empowerment, but perhaps there is some duality to it.
At 0:49: 'I'm just a farmer and I grow marijuana". Yeah, if women like getting stoned.
kick ass song, jeff beck does a guitar solo on it too
