Presley, Elvis - You'll Be Gone Lyrics

Sweetheart we're alone
And you are mine
Let's make this night a night to remember
Don't make our love a cold dying ember
For with the dawn, you'll be gone
Hold me close in your arms as the night withers away
Let's not waste one precious kiss while we're together
Oh please come to my arms and say you'll love me forever
For with the dawn, you'll be gone

Sweetheart when you're near
My heart is aflame
Your lips pressed on mine is heaven descending
And I could die because it is ending
For with the dawn, you'll be gone
Let these passions we feel in our hearts never end
I could never share this feeling with another
Oh please say that you feel the same knowing no other ??
For with the dawn, you'll be gone
For with the dawn, you'll be gone
For with the dawn, you'll be gone
For with the dawn, you'll be gone

Presley, Elvis You'll Be Gone Comments

“You’ll Be Gone was a number that Elvis and Red had been working on, writing and rewriting it in informal jams for over a year... it was one into which Elvis poured all his emotions.” -Elvis Biography, Careless Love

  2. J.... ....

Elvis wrote this song and it's great!

  4. D.... R....

You'll Be Gone but never Forgotten

  5. p.... g....

He should have written more songs . This proves he was talented in that area also .

    p.... g....

paul gerkin that one he wrote with Red West about his mother's death is amazing too. That's Someone You'll Never Forget it's called

    p.... g....

    @BaronVonPenguin I think " That's someone You'll never forget " is the best recording he made that wasn't a hit .

  6. S.... D....

Elvis was a song writer. He wrote most of his own songs.
    Lieber and Stoller.
He was the REAL Michael Bloomfield, Duane Allman, Jim Morrison.
He was George Martin phil spector phil graham.
    He was murdered in 1969.
BTW Priscillas real name was Melissa. Also a songwriter.
She was married to Aaron in 1963.
    Daughter is Jessica. Born 1965.
Song by Duane and his wife.

    That is mental haha

Can anyone help with the odd storyline? Elvis says that she'll be gone with the dawn, but wants her loyalty forever. To which situation does this apply? Military service, perhaps? Because that's likely when this idea came to him. He most certainly did co-author this particular song. You could say that this is his whole career as a songwriter. He sent an early demo to Priscilla, who was not yet living in Memphis. She told him "I like your rock and roll songs better." Off sulked the king. He didn't want to write *anything* anymore! (There are fascinating fragments here and there in the future. But nothing had this ambition in it.)

Elvis would do a thing and if there was any criticism, if someone didn't like it, he was done with it. Forever, door slammed. Or, anyway, after the 50s, he got to be like that.

I think it's a cool song. Charlie Hodge did the little two-chord melody adapted from Cole Porter's Begin The Beguine. Red filled in any lyrical things that were rough around the edges. And then Elvis buried his song because his future wife didn't like the genre.

P.S. - - Who the heck is Moozer?

    R.... M....

Robin Markowitz this post of yours is soooooo full of bs.
    He wrote it himself.
He was part of Lieber and Stoller.
He was the REAL Michael Bloomfield, Duane Allman, Jim Morrison, Kris Kristofferson,
HE WAS PHIL SPECTOR, PHIL GRAHAM GEORGE MARTIN.
    HE STARTED MOTOWN. APPLE
BERRY GORDY TWO NAMES NOT ONE GUY.
Priscilla was not so young and they were married in 1963.
She was also a musician and a song writer.
They wrote many songs together as well.
THEY WERE BOTH MURDERED IN 1969.

  14. M.... C....

It's just so magical! And the best thing about this wonderful song is that Elvis cowrote it! 😍 And all of those people are like "Elvis couldn't write a song" ????!!!

  15. D.... B....

The final of the song is like the final of ''it's now or never ''

  16. M.... G....

  23. N.... M....

When Priscilla came to visit Elvis in the U.S. in the spring of 1962, Elvis proudly played her the new recordings he had just made in Nashville. One of these was 'You'll Be Gone,' a song that he had written himself with his good friends Red West and Charlie Hodge. To his deep frustration, Priscilla remarked that she liked his rock 'n' roll recordings better. Elvis had a fit, Priscilla was devastated, and Elvis never tried to write a song again.

    N.... M....

    Nana Miavsen 😣😣😣

    N.... M....

Nana Miavsen it's amazing to think what Elvis could have done and he was still one of the best of all time anyway

    N.... M....

That is exactly what happened. *One person* didn't care for it, and off he sulked. He buried the song! It's frustrating because, well, he didn't have a long life. He had opportunities that he deliberately passed up because he was so easily hurt by criticism.

  24. N.... M....

This is maybe the only song he really did some writing on himself :)

    N.... M....

He co=wrote three other songs as well.

    N.... M....

@aWalkThroughLife Three? Well, okay, there were definitely original jams later on. And apparently he had a lot more to do with the Love Me Tender soundtrack than was previously thought. One of the songs was an old hymn that he adapted by singing what he remembered of it all over the film set.

But that's not what he was doing here. He really cared about this. I don't even understand the lyrics, but he did and it's fine. Unfortunately, he got crushed by a tiny bit of criticism.

    N.... M....

    @Robin Markowitz What criticism?

    N.... M....

@aWalkThroughLife He played it for Priscilla Beaulieu. She said "I like to your rock and roll songs better." Elvis freaked out - a whole tantrum, Priscilla was devastated that he got so very upset, and so much so that he buried the song for years!

Maybe the song was for her. He wanted her to hear it. And to like it. And she just wanted, I don't know, "Rip It Up" or some rock and roll song.

He was extremely sensitive to criticism to the point where he didn't do things that he could have done.

The only humorous sidebar to this is when the Rolling Stones' manager locked Mick and Keith inside a kitchen until they emerged with a new and original song. That actually happened. The song was "As Tears Go By." I don't think that strategy would have worked with Elvis, but hey! You never know.

    N.... M....

@Robin Markowitz I thought he played the Elvis IS back Album (1960 - when he was back from the army) for priscilla and that she reacted on that, she liked his Rock and Roll better. You ll be gone is recorded later.

  25. R.... P....

Spanish musical flare with Italian influenced singing

  26. B.... ....

Heard this song for the first time 2 nights ago at the Hollywood Bowl, covered by Morrissey. Great cover version.

  27. M.... A....

Sensationnel.Une voix unique.Un aura propre à Elvis.Et ce monsieur touche à tous les genres.Du rock du swing du gospel du blues.Chapeau l'artiste.

  28. W.... W....

This isnt my bag and find this disappointing !

  29. M.... T....

He had such a magnificent voice ! I never get tired of listening to him.

  30. R.... L....

Very Spanish music, sung very well by Elvis.

  31. J.... R....

He should have gotten rid of Parker and wrote more songs. This is great!

    J.... R....

Elvis was so musical, it just seems like he would have focused more on songwriting. Marty Robbins said he tried to write a song a day, which he admitted was impossible. So I guess Elvis needed more privacy in order to write songs.

  32. k.... ....

The lyrics to "You'll Be Gone" written by Elvis Presley, Red West, and Charlie Hodge. Copyright 1965. The song was written and recorded in 1962 but released in 1965. The song was included on the 1965 Girl Happy movie soundtrack album although it did not appear in the film. The song was also released as a 45 single by RCA Victor as the B side to "Do the Clam" in 1965. Morrissey covered the song in 2015.

    "Sweetheart we're alone
    And you are mine
Let's make this night a night to remember
Don't make our love a cold dying ember
For with the dawn, you'll be gone.

Hold me close in your arms as the night withers away
Let's not waste one precious kiss while we're together
Oh please come to my arms and say you'll love me forever
For with the dawn, you'll be gone.

    Sweetheart when you're near
    My heart is aflame.
Your lips pressed on mine is heaven descending.
And I could die because it is ending
For with the dawn, you'll be gone.

Let these passions we feel in our hearts never end
I could never share this feeling with another.
Oh please say that you feel the same knowing no other.
For with the dawn, you'll be gone
For with the dawn, you'll be gone
For with the dawn, you'll be gone
For with the dawn, you'll be gone."

Thanks. What do these lyrics mean? How can someone be gone in the morning yet stay forever?

  33. g.... ....

I had the 45 and used to listen to it, I think it came from a carnival's jukebox where my uncle used to work on as maintenance man, it was removed to put new disks.

elvis liked this stuff, the early 60s like form 1960-1963 elvis wanted to do that stuff not the Col that period shows elvis talent

  35. D.... B....

I've sung Elvis karaoke since I was in college and I wish I'd learned this one when I was younger-- but at 44 now, I doubt I could do this one justice.

    L.... D....

...In the liner notes to the CD Elvis by the Presleys (2005) Ernst Jorgensen wrote: "When Priscilla came to visit Elvis in the U.S. in the spring of 1962, Elvis proudly played her the new recordings he had just made in Nashville. One of these was 'You'll Be Gone,' a song that he had written himself with his good friends Red West and Charlie Hodge. To his deep frustration, Priscilla remarked that she liked his rock 'n' roll recordings better. Elvis had a fit, Priscilla was devastated, and Elvis never tried to write a song again...or you can believe Red West, a talented song-writer, who in 2010 said Elvis' contribution to the song was zero. How many people in the know died, such as Hodge in 2006, before he summoned the courage to tell the world his version of the creation of the song. Furthermore, please don't forget he was a financial leech on Elvis, for many years. He, and the other co-conspirators milked Elvis for everything he was worth. When that gold mine was depleted, they sold Elvis out for big money with 'Elvis: What happened?' a tell-all memoir which they claimed to be a friendly warning, rather than a money-making exercise. Yeah, right. Dunleavy's involvement pretty much destroys that claim...My point: Don't necessarily believe Red West. His claim could be true, but Presley and Hodge are dead. West could also be full of it...

  42. l.... a....

one of elvis best songs that was never put out as a single it would have been a great big hit  les attridge singer songwriter

    l.... a....

+les attridge - You are right les, it was not put out as the plug side but it was on an RCA single. It was the flip side of "Do The Clam." A shame...because this song is far better than that novelty song.

  43. L.... ....

    AWESOME

Here is ELVIS singing in that spirit of the ITALIAN TENORS  - - as he did so well- Joe Nania   a.k.a.  Hollywood Joe

  46. G.... Y....

    Priscilla destroyed a talent!

    G.... Y....

No she didn't. Everyone is not going to like a certain kind of music. She preferred the rock and roll. It was his own oversensitivity. As with much in his life, he slammed the door on himself.

  47. D.... ....

Awesome song - thank you so much for sharing!!!

  48. H.... B....

inialny if you don't like ELVIS it's you right and your taste and nobody has the right to dicsus it but to wrong the history you are not allowed to do it.first of all.- all the sixsties groupes tha you've mentioned are greats elvis fans and they've said in many many occasions and interviews also the all covered the kings's songs or they wrote songs as a tibute to him.also when you talked about elvis in the army  he got drafted fom 1958 till 1960 and not (1960/1962)so that changes everything you wanted to prove by using the dates and guess what all the elvis greats rock hits were recorded between 1954 and 1958 so..............

  49. P.... R....

Really inialny?....Social engineering? I guess that would include any other so called music act that came down the line the last 25 years. Oh, you can include include OHBama himself.

  54. i.... ....

This is not Rock'n'Roll - Elvis Presley never deserved to be called the king of Rock'n'Roll. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and other rock musicians always ignored Elvis Presley and adored Chuck Berry. Elvis Presley was an uninspiring singer and a less than average musician. He was just a successful product of the social engineering in the USA.

    i.... ....

Inanity says that "He (Elvis) was just a successful product of the social engineering in the USA."  That statement is as ridiculous as the suggestion that Elvis' success was the result (primarily) of clever management.  If that suggestion had been true, that same clever management would have produced other artists as popular and successful as Elvis.  Didn't happen.  The Colonel has artists before; not one was anywhere near Elvis stature.Similarly, that "social engineering" - had there in fact been such a thing at work - should have benefitted artists beyond Elvis.  Unless we're to believe it operated precisely and solely for the benefit of Elvis.  Considering the condemnation he encountered - before he entered the Army - you'd be hard pressed to believe the powers that be were operating on his behalf.

    i.... ....

You know fuck all about the history of Rock music or Elvis. Go and listen to his 1950s version of 'Big Hunk O Love' and tell me he wasn't a rock and roll singer. You haven't a clue you stupid little piss ant. You're so blinded by ignorance and hatred for the man, yet you have him to thank for walking into Sun Studios in 1954 and changing music and popular culture forever. It always makes me laugh when I have to listen to you pathetic little music revisionists try and lessen his impact and influence, yet history records what he did. Who'll remember your bullshit in years to come? Here, take a listen and see what kind of vocals we'd have got from the Beatles or the Rolling fucking Stones. Nowhere the genius of this man you ignorant little fuckwit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFSWCj66WyY

    i.... ....

@ leafywashere leafywashere. The idiot doesn't have a brain to damage.

    i.... ....

Argyro Koukoula Elvis did record some high quality songs during the British Invasion but it was out of style so those songs never got recognition. And Elvis didn't want to record songs that sounded like the Beatles because it wasn't his style.

    i.... ....

you are so wrong and a ignorant asshole

  55. r.... ....

Yes. Thank you for your elaboration on my comment. Charlie also composed a little 2-chord melody, but it sounds like the Cole Porter song in any event. I actually asked Charlie "who wrote the words, and who wrote the music," and he got very angry at the question. That's all I will say. Wow. A long, long, long time ago when I was just a kid, really. And he slammed Elvis, and it wasn't pleasant. But when you hear the Porter song, Charlie's melody wasn't that innovative. So, uh, I guess that's why.

  56. G.... W....

According to cracked, this is the only Elvis song that Elvis wrote.

    G.... W....

    A. Nal Cavity elvis helped, he did this with some songs eg. don't be cruel but elvis never wrote a song by himself, he helped in some

  57. N.... ....

Best Elvis song n the world!!

  58. B.... A....

I'm no musicologist but my sense is that the two tunes, while similar, are sufficiently different so as to not actually be an infringement. I've listened to both the Porter and the Presley songs a few times, now, which is, on the whole, not a bad way to spend some time!

  59. m.... ....

This is begin the beguine from Cole Porter. Elvis wanted to sing the song but the Col. always insisted that he and Elvis own the song, well Cole Porter said no so Elvis and Red West wrote this. Listen to begin the beguine and you can hear it.

  60. I.... ....

with you all the way on that one!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MJ has a few good music vidoes back in the 80's, but the Beatles could never stand toe to toe with Elvis on stage. On any decade when the King was performing. Long live the King. Beatles four court jesters, but wrote some good songs.

  61. H.... V....

I have love this song, since it came out, as a b side, on a single. Here his talent, once again, comming out!

  62. J.... L....

That is such a shame that Priscilla didn't like it as well as his rock and roll music. He was so gifted to sing and he did a beautiful job on this one. It was the flip side of one of his hits. I can't remember which one because I gave all of my singles to my 22 year old grandson. He is a huge Elvis fan.

  63. J.... W....

Very similar to Cole Porter's Begin The Biguine

  64. .... T....

    SÜPER ÖTESİ..

  65. A.... E....

A beautiful song, and Elvis sings it so beautifully.Priscilla reaction to the song probally upset him to the point he never ever wanted to write another song. Priscilla"What were you thinking". Beautiful song Elvis you should had kept writing.

  66. e.... ....

So they wrote there on songs. That changes nothing. Many artist wrote there own songs. People who buy music don't care who wrote it. There not buying the record/cd because of who wrote it.There buying it because of the sound. I have no respect for the Beatles or MJ. Elvis was the total package. Bar None.

  67. C.... ....

michael jackson did write the Hooks in man in the mirror and thriller from what I understand. Jackie Wilson is who Elvis idolized also didnt his biggest hits either. All I want is for people to respect the artists who did write their biggest hits...Jimi, Buddy, The beatles, the band and so on. Its artists like that that truly change things, but its personalities like Elvis and Jacko that really sell the ideas. Thats all

  68. r.... ....

The song is strange. The lyric is cryptic. Red wrote simple songs, mostly. This is, as the uploader said, "unusual." Anyone know what it's ABOUT??? Really, what do you think?

    r.... ....

rjm it was recorded in 62 and was more to show elvis tenor voice, like it's now or never

  69. S.... S....

@EricVonZipper2 Yes he did write it with a little advice from Red. In my opinion The best song Elvis ever wrote was "That's Someone You Never Forget". It's brilliant. Elvis also wrote over 50 Gospel songs over the years.

  70. i.... ....

never heard of this one by Elvis and it is very good as expected

  71. P.... ....

@ELVISAPLOVER5 Thats why i deleted the comment originally.....i realised Elvis did infact co write the song. Idiot.

  72. k.... ....

@Phenomenon58 Michael Jackson's theme songs are Thriller and Man in the Mirror. And he did NOT write those songs. They were written by two white writers, Rod Temperton and Glen Ballard. Wacko Jacko did not write his biggest hits. So what if he "wrote" other songs? Little Richard did not "write" Long Tall Sally and Good Golly Miss Molly, his two biggest hits. Yeah, that is important. Elvis was just as much a songwriter as Little Richard or Michael Jackson. They just put their names on the credit.

  73. k.... ....

@Phenomenon58 Yeah, but look at the songwriting credits for Heartbreak Hotel, All Shook Up, That's Someone You Never Forget, You'll Be Gone, Don't Be Cruel, Love Me Tender, and Paralyzed. The co-writer is Elvis Presley. Elvis "wrote" those as much as Jackson or Little Richard wrote theirs. Jackson was no songwriter. I bet he couldn't even read music He had Quincy Jones tell the band what to play and just put his name on the credit. Jackson never actually composed any music.

  74. P.... ....

@kingoma61 Yea but the ones he did write overide those successes. Billie jean, Beat it and a whole lot of others. And in all honesty i dont listen to little richard, only long tall sally. And i think thats what his really known for. But Elvis is one of my biggest inspirations, and ALL of his success was due to writers. But theres a difference between how the singer interprets songs. So i couldnt imagine another singer doing hound dog, or blue suede shoes, i want to be free and others.

  75. P.... ....

@ELVISAPLOVER5 You said Elvis ruled for writing it? You didnt comment on how the song was sung? Elvis was an entertainer and one of my biggest inspirations as a singer. So why would i trash him? I removed it because i didnt want to start a argument. And reading the other comments i finally realised he did write it. So that made me delete it also.

  76. k.... ....

@Phenomenon58 "Thriller" was written by a white guy, Brit Rod Temperton from Heatwave. Temperton also wrote "Rock With You" and "Off the Wall". "Man in the Mirror" was written by a white guy, Glen Ballard. "She's Out of My Life" and "Girld Friend" were also written by others. Jackson did not write his biggest hits. Neither did Little Richard. A white guy, John Marascalco, wrote "Good Golly Miss Molly", "Ready Teddy", and "Rip It Up". Enotris Johnson wrote "Long Tall Sally". Why is there no fuss?

  77. P.... ....

@kingoma61 Michael jackson wrote and composed all of his songs. Baybe not when he was at motown.

  78. J.... M....

@ajentertainment He played it for Priscilla without telling her that he wrote it. She told him she didn't really like it... that she preferred his "faster" songs. He was devastated and never attempted to write again...

  79. k.... ....

Little Richard did not write his biggest songs. Michael Jackson did not write his biggest songs. Freddy Mercury did not write his biggest songs. Only Elvis gets trashed though. Enotris Johnson wrote Long Tall Sally. Richard put his name on the credit. John Marascalco, a white writer, wrote Good Golly Miss Molly. Thriller and Rock With You were written by a white writer, Rod Temperton. We Will Rock You was written by Brian May. But no one disses Michael or Richard or Fred. What is up with that?

  80. k.... ....

@charlotte946 "You'll Be Gone" and "That's Someone You Never Forget" are two songs that Elvis Presley co-wrote. Elvis put his own name on the songwriting credits meaning that he wanted to take credit for writing the songs. End of story. Why do these morons always have to question whether Elvis wrote them or not? Elvis put his name on the songwriting credit. What is so hard to understand about that? And even with the 1950s songs it is arguable because Elvis changed the songs and added to them.

  81. 1.... ....

elvis will never be gone as long there is music

  82. k.... ....

Even the 1950s songs where Elvis received songwriting credit are open to debate. Elvis reached publishing agreements with the principal writers to allow him to take a credit on the songs. The rationale was that Elvis could add to or change the songs as he saw fit. He entered into agreements with the writers. It is understood that he is not the principal writer, but you can receive a co-writing credit if you contribute to a song in whatever way. Why is that hard to grasp?

  83. k.... ....

Elvis co-wrote "You'll Be Gone" and "That's Someone You Never Forget". His name is on the songwriting credit because that is how he wanted it to appear. No question that Red West was the "principal writer", but Elvis was a co-writer of these songs in the sense that he helped to create them and was involved in the songwriting process. For "You'll Be Gone", West admitted that they actually sat down together and worked on the song, based on Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine".

  84. t.... ....

Great song but 'take 4' is better

  85. S.... ....

Elvis will always be the best forever. in your face haters

  86. k.... ....

"You'll Be Gone" was written by Elvis Presley, Red West, and Charlie Hodge. That was how it was published. It was a collaboration. The song appeared on the Girl Happy soundtrack album in 1965 but was not in the movie. The song was also released as a B side single in 1965 by RCA. The A side was "Do the Clam". Elvis wanted to create a song like Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine" with a Latin or Caribbean tempo. He wanted to adapt the Porter song. When denied permission, he created his own song.

  87. e.... ....

A Majestic singer for all times. Folks it don't get any better than this.. 12 stars.......

  88. k.... ....

Elvis co-wrote "You'll Be Gone" with red West and Charlie Hodge. They actually sat down and worked together on the lyrics and music. Elvis also co-wrote "That's Someone You Never Forget" with Red West. Elvis came up with the title and the concept for the song and worked on the song in the studio. He was involved in the composition of the song. He deserved the co-writing credit although Red West did most of the writing. Songwriting is a creative process.

  89. E.... .....

@iwantwhatiget Actually Elvis did write "You´ll be gone". It is the only song Elvis wrote.

  90. 1.... ....

Elvis told, that one of the only songs he ever wrote, and so on, was all shook up, which he thought of after having a bad dream, and he was all shook up :D <3 I LOOVE ELVIS, and I DONT CARE IF HE DIDN'T write his songs, BECAUSE HE OWN EVERYSONG HE SANG! <3

Just because Elvis didn't write most of his songs doesn't mean he wasn't capable of doing so. Look at country singer George Strait, between his first album and his current album he didn't write any of his own material.

Elvis was co-writer on this song, get your facts right. He was also credited as writer on other songs, but there are only few songs he actually co-wrote. For example "Love Me Tender" is credited to him, but he didn't write it.

Never understood this preoccupation on whether he wrote his own songs or not,.
A talent to write is obviously great but what I saw on stage and listened to on record made this totally irrelevant
