Yes it is ( pardon the pun ) so strange.I play guitar and often sing this song .Not sure what key Elvis did it in .I do it in A .Used to be a singer way back in the late 50s early 60s , so know most if not all his ballads.

I was only 15 when sometime in 56 I was in bed late one night listening to radio Luxembourg on a small transistor radio ( used to pick up American stations late at night) when I think it was heartbreak hotel I heard over the air waves .I swear I died and went to heaven on hearing it .Have learned all his mostly early stuff on guitar over the years .And was a singer in a little 3 piece rock band in 59 so did all his stuff at local hops.

I was 13 then and only heard this song played on the radio once even though I liked it the best of his ballads. Bought the record and wore it out. Before he started to play Vegas he was still the king of ballads. But, doing 6 shows a week in Vegas took its toll on his health (drugs) and it killed him. RIP

Hi Bernadette .Love his ballads .I play guitar and do this song in A .Only play for myself and wife now ,but was in a little rock band in 59 and we did all his songs at the time , though I was more a ballad singer and still play mostly Early Sun record tracks.
Had some great times playing gigs back then in dance halls.Great memories , and of course the king was very much alive back in 59.
