Prefab Sprout - We Let The Stars Go Lyrics
There was a girl I used to know
She'd tease me about my name
Fan the embers long enough
I sometimes catch her flame
The soothing voice of distance tells me
Other music fills my ears
But I still hear her sing
She sings
'Paddy Joe, say Paddy Joe
Don't you remember me?' (Ha-a-a-a-aow)
'Long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go'
'Paddy Joe, say Paddy Joe
Don't you remember me?' (Ha-a-a-a-aow)
We let the stars go free'
There was a boy I used to be
I guess that he was cold
If she came to buy him now
How cheaply he'd be sold
But the light is gone and it is dark
What used to be the sky
Is suddenly embarrassing
To the naked eye
You see Paddy Joe, see Paddy Joe
Can't face this memory (Ha-a-a-a-aow)
Long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go
Paddy Joe, see Paddy Joe
Can't face this memory (Ha-a-a-a-aow)
Long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go
Long ago one gorgeous night
We let the stars go
Long ago one stupid night
We let the stars go free
(We let the stars go free)
(We let the stars go free)
We let the stars go free
We let the stars go free

Prefab Sprout We Let The Stars Go Comments
This song sounds so so fresh in 2020. Hard to believe it is 30 years old!!!!!.
this man made some Beautiful music and is so underrated as a song writer and musician..
Love you guys Fab Music
snare should have been a little lower in the mix ....its a distraction from the excellent gentle track I>M>O ...but at least it doesn't have that huge gated reverb most 80s tracks had ,,,,,i cant listen to a lot of 80s pop for being assaulted by drums
So romantic
I personally could not let stars go I love the stars in the night sky I live on a mountain an wot a view
Wish they would make a new album !!
I always loved this song! I was just sitting here working and the tune suddenly came into my head, found myself singing the chorus. "Patty-Joe, say Patty-Joe, don't you remember me?" Had to look it up and see if I could find it. How great to hear it again! I love the lady singing at the end, so ethereal, and then the line with the harmony. Sends shivers down my spine. Thanks for the lovely memory.
I was 20 years old and met my first love with this song. This song is so underrated.
Oh to see the genius of Paddy and Co.reunion tour on a warm Summer evening in San Diego 2020.
One can dream
Yes, one can dream....
Terrific, helps me cling on to romantic, human feelings
Grande prefab spraut speriamo che cualche cantante possa cantare a x facotr delle canzoni dei prefab spraut. Con grande ammirazione. Luigi da italy
This song is very special for me. It remind me one dark night, at the seaside, with that special girl. That night we also left the stars go free.
I always remember that night and that girl. Thanks Prefab Sprout for all the magic in your songs. Paddy Mc Alloon, thank you.
This gem delivers exacltly the mix of sadness, kindness and affliction we feel when are faced with some memories. I could play it in an endless loop.
if LOVE DOESN'T HURT it's not love........it's just a DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP
Amazing Paddy , what a song writer !! He is up there with the greats ! Derek xx

Grossly underestimated in the 80's !!

One of the most powerful songs I’ve ever heard

One of the most powerful songs I’ve ever heard
His voice kept me alive in the 80s when I moved from London to New York.
Great group
Cool, smooth, typically brilliant Prefab Sprout. Massively under-rated.
How this band is not up there with the best ?? I don’t bloody no
People are clueless and us my friends very cool!
The world is a better place with songs like this.
Excellent!!!!!
A masterpiece in the music industry
Probably my favourite Sprout song, although Best Jewel Thief from the recent album runs it close
John Scott was just listening to that last night!!! What a track.
A perfect little gem of songwriting perfectly encapsulating a mild feeling of nostalgia and regret with a certain sweetness to it rather than sadness.
Thomas Dolby...Blah Blah
Eargasms
This One rates for me as One of the more nostalgic and melancholic songs ever......
Wendy is the prettiest plain girl in the world.. reminds me so much of my sister in law in the eighties
we let the stars go free........
if she came to buy him now, how cheaply he'd be sold.
why is this guy not in line for a music Knighthood.
I love it. I'm dreaning aren;t I? Who cares,? Come play, 'long one gorgeous nighjt..... howl, babe
Perfection. What else can be said except the truth, the words, the exellente musicality, an original and perfect symbiosis and all the members of the group bring their contribution to this magic which operates each time. Thanks to GOD of us give such musicians and singers out of the ordinary.
Paddy mac is not underrated,.. well not by people who know & appreciate great music & what it entails..those who appreciate real art appreciate it for life..its a hell of a lot more than can be said of those whose musical likes are as disposable as the toilet paper they use to wipe their tasteless arses !
So good
does it matter fenian or English? he is a great songwriter
One of the reply great bands of the 80s.
Excelent!!
haunting, lonely & full of the missed opportunities of youth & love none of us can ever revisit, beautiful, touching & eternal.
It will always be GREAT TIMELESS QUALITY MUSIC. To the ones who can't or don't understand this: Be born again....
QUE COISA MARAVILHOSA ESSA MUSICA, E A MENINA E LINDÍSSIMA ESTOU APAIXONADO POR ELA!!!
Dedicated to Vanessa, crazy days in Arenal Majorca 1989, sorry for hurting you.

Paddy: such a sensitive soul.
That intro alone can make me tear up..
So beautiful both musically and lyrically.
Just love this song paddy u r a genius
el video es genial
Who, of you, really need to comment on every video! music will last for ever, so just enjoy it,
14 people (and counting) are embarrassing to the naked eye, that's why they make passive-aggressive vote downs on great songs.
Barry Landymore they obviously don’t remember paddy joe
Forgive them.
Amazing band and so under-rated
Had a pretty awful Christmas this and last year, felt rather emotional and just put this on and let my tears go free.
Dale Robins n
you are so right
What a songwriter. Criminally under-rated.
Andy Northall you are right my friend
absolutely I agree, its beyond me that they didnt have more success.
He is THE underrated songwriter
one of those under the radar bands you are lucky enough to follow !!
A wistful, sad tale of young love-we can all relate I guess.
there was a boy I used to be/c'era un ragazzo che ero solito essere....
back in my 1986 circa...
1990 : " Aquella noia que un dia vaig conèixer
I que vaig intentar oblidar
A vegades em sorprèn la seva flama
La suau veu de la distància em diu :
- Allò només va ser una aventura -
Però, en nits com aquesta
La seva música resona dins meu “
Un incanto.
sublime!
we love this music
One of their best !
Christopher John Blue Yes!
is this song about love unrequited, or love lost?
I don't understand how some one dislikes this beautiful song
David G if they do thier just mugs
36 idiots. Hey! Good name for a band!
@Andy Northall
neither do I
Chock full of hits, this lot!
One of the most beautiful song in the world, in my opinion.
I wasn't old enough to see them live and I would cut my right arm off to be given the chance to go back in time... I did manage to see Paddy and Thomas Dolby playing together in London about 7 years ago, which was sheer brilliance.
I didn't know that show happened, sounds awesome!
I've seen them live a couple of times on the Swoon and Steve McQueen tours and they were good but I wouldn't say great. Far better in the studio.
I saw them at Shepherd's Bush in 2000 and they were good but there was something lacking. They are better in the studio. I could not put my finger on why then and still cannot. Dare I say it there was a lack of passion in the performance but they have made some of the greatest records ever so they had an excuse ( sort of) if my perception is right.
This is from an excellent album Jordan The Comeback 19 tracks of pure craft
😀
Incredible album...
