This song got me through many all nighter studies in college. One of my faves and a band that ranks up there with the best of them. I'd love to hear this in 8D!

I like how this video is a bit more of a sleazy Paddy (Sprouts) then the other vids!

This song is very personal to me. When it came out, I was smitten with this young lady named Beth. I didn’t understand why her feelings weren’t reciprocal. I found some small measure of comfort in this song. I’m blessed to have a loving wife now (different lady), but as much as I love this song I still get some mild nausea when I hear it, even all these years later.

This has got to be as close to perfection as you can get in a pop song. The package of music, lyrics and production is sublime. It deserved to be a big hit for Prefab Sprout, it's a real shame it wasn't.

A pop masterpiece from 1992 — likely one of my top 5 Prefab Sprout recordings. Though it's lyrically simpler than many McAloon classics — between the gorgeous melody, Paddy's beautiful vocal and the lavish and sweeping Stephen Lipson production, it all comes together with stunning results. It does sound closer to Pet Shop Boys than they've ever been (which for me is a good thing), but rarely have they achieved this kind of urgency, drive and climactic finale (well, they certainly did with "Scarlet Nights"). Happily, they also made one of their best videos to promote it.

Good to see such an erudite comment on You Tube from someone who obviously understands the depth and import of Prefab Sprout's music.

I'd also check out Kylie's (yes!) version of this. Single piano, her voice. Wonderful.

I first heard it on Kylie's Aphrodite World Tour. It was a wonderful highlight of the show. But the studio version she recorded in '94 is even more beautiful (can be found as B-Side of Confide in Me, and as bonus track of the "Kylie Minogue" reissue)

I like it! Just a hint of Pet Shop Boys and Stock, Aitkin and Waterman. Very polished - perhaps in need of a rougher edge.
It has been said thousands of times, but the 80's were a golden age where record companies took a risk on young hopefuls with some bright ideas and their own original songs. It doesn't seem so now for the most part, the music industry seem more risk averse than ever and we get plastic wannabes that do not endure.

+Simonr501 You're not the first to say this sounds a bit PSB, but I think you're closer with the SAW observation. I can't recall a PSB song with a guitar riff, let alone one so funky. I think the PSB's only venture with guitars was on the release album and the less said about that the better imo.

A nice enough song but very weak compared to everything that came before it. Far too generic sounding.

+alex44996 in my opinion, yes it's better than cars and girls and anything else they did, although I only have their greatest hits to go on. ;-p i'm not saying the other songs aren't good, it's just they can't compare with this perfection of a song. I know i'm probably in the minority saying this, but that doesn't bother me. I'd rather say what I think then go with the crowd. ;-p
