Porcupine Tree - Time Flies Lyrics

I was born in '67
The year of Sgt. Pepper
And Are You Experienced?

Into a suburb of heaven
Yeah, it should've been forever
It all seems to make so much sense

But after a while
You realize time flies
And the best thing that you can do
Is take whatever comes to you
'Cause time flies

She said luck is all you make it
You just reach out and take it
Now let's dance a while

She said nothing ever happens
If you don't make it happen
And if you can't laugh then smile

But after a while
You realize time flies
And the best thing that you can do
Is take whatever comes to you
'Cause time flies

And laughing under summer showers
Is still the way I see you now

How does time break down
With no marker, things slow down.
A conference of the strange
And your family is deranged

I could tell you what I'm thinking
While we sit here drinking
But I'm not sure where to start

You see there's something wrong here
I'm sorry if I'm not clear,
Can you stop smoking your cigar?

But after a while
You realize time flies
And the best thing that you can do
Is take whatever comes to you
'Cause time flies

And the coat your wore to Alton Towers
It's still the way I see you now

Porcupine Tree Time Flies Comments
  1. T.... B....

Beautiful, about how the time flies, how much time we lost...

  2. S.... F....

I remember listening to this song when I was 17, when it first came out. Bought the record and everything. Me and my buddies listened to this song all the time as we tried to make our own little prog rock band, playing in my drummer's run down shack in the country side of Southern Italy. We never did much musically, but we had fun, met girls, fell in and out of love, got in fights. It was cool. I'm 27 now, moved far away from home in the cold north, moved in with my GF/childhood sweetheart, and got a purple belt in BJJ. When I listen to this song I remember who I used to be, and DAMN.. I barely recognize myself in the mirror. I'm gonna try to start a band again. Let's see how that goes :)

  3. O.... S....

Cutting a song to half its size, that requires some talent

  4. A.... H....

a beautiful mix of dogs and sheep

  5. E.... A....

Who else is watching this on the very last day of 2019?

  6. B.... C....

Great song. Great video. Great band.

  7. H.... N....

  16. L.... A....

It seems like Steve took Animals and fused it in one song

  17. p.... ....

Can't believe how long it's been since this came out. Time certainly does fly

  18. M.... N....

It is outrageous that such a video is not available with a resolution of 1080p or at least 720p ... :(

  19. f.... c....

    Master....
Oh fuck yes. MASTER FUCKING PIECE.

  20. i.... ....

I saw my school. Its route in the morning. Sitting in the bus. Drinking
water from the water bottle around the neck. Then the assembly line.
Singing prayers. Checking of nails and shoes and if the dress is ironed.
The first bell with pin drop silence because of class teacher. The
lunch break. The running around in the field with your belt buckle as
the power source. Saying out names of your favorite cartoon characters
aloud. Their power becomes yours in that small tiny lunch period. The
rest of the sleepy day awakened by chit chat and teachers scolding. The
last bell. Ohh the last bell!!!!!!!!! - Thank you Porcupine Tree. Love
    you guys <3

  21. S.... B....

Good to see so many 'Pink Floyd' lovers here ..
Most underrated band in history (my opinion)

  22. D.... H....

I was born in '91. The year of the Black Album....and Nevermind.

  23. M.... T....

Here's a quick challenge for everybody: Use the first lines of this song to write about your birth year and two known rock albums that were released that year. I'll start:

    I was born in ninety-five
The year of "Sky Moves Sideways"
    And also of "The Bends"

(fact: it also rhymes with the second part of the verse, which ends with "It all used to make so much sense").

  24. G.... S....

It's a short version... the full song is on The Incident album...

  25. L.... ....

You gotta be crazy, gotta have a real need

  26. L.... M....

    I was born in '97
    The year of Ok Computer
    and South Park

  27. T.... S....

The song should be named "The abstract concept of measuring biological processes passes at a considerable rate"

  28. E.... M....

The beginning sounds like"Dogs" of Pink Floyd. Are similar.

  29. J.... L....

Soy admirador de Piña Floyd 1000% pero me encanta esta banda

  30. T.... W....

Love the song, dislike the edit.

  31. N.... ....

    This song <3

  32. P.... D....

Does anyone else think it sounds a lot like Dogs?

  33. C.... ....

I was Born in ˋ01... its sad How you realise so early that time flies... Cause i think back then when i didnt Even thought about it, i enjoyed being in the Moment much more...

  34. m.... h....

"yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes" (James 4.14)

  35. J.... N....

Congratulations to all you super sleuths that figured out this sounds like Floyd (Dogs, Sheep, etc.). Wow. You should to have read interviews with Mr. Wilson first to realize it was intentional and an Homage to his biggest influence. Floyd's fingerprints are all over his writing and if this was your first clue then you don't really have one.

  36. J.... G....

musically it sounds like it could be from pink floyds " animals"....the lead singer has his own style..but doesnt sound like david Gilmour..

  37. J.... N....

I actually was born in '67. I love this song, but it also saddens me; reminds me of the things I've been through, and losing the great love of my life. "And the best thing that you can do,is take whatever comes to you". For better or worse, that's how I've been living my life since she left. Some songs just hit too close to home.

  48. J.... M....

This short version is not enough to apreciate the magnificence of this song ...

  49. b.... ....

Steven Wilson's music touches my soul in a way few other artists can. He's really tapped into something exceptional creatively. My dad and I really bonded on Steven's music, he was one of PT's biggest fans. He passed away last year, but hearing these songs makes me think of him, every time.

    b.... ....

My condolences. I know exactly how you feel. My father passed away late last year. He wasn't a rock or metal fan, but appreciated good music.

Such a beautiful song, it's incredible how music travels and reaches whoever has to arrive, at the moment it has to arrive.

  59. O.... F....

Boah, der Wilson klaut ja gnadenlos bei allem, was nicht bei drei auf den Bäumen ist. Das können andere besser! Keine Ahnung warum der so gehypt wird....

  60. J.... ....

    Dogs.... pink floyd

  61. B.... B....

Text her, tell her how you feel...before its too late..

  62. E.... M....

I miss you so much Porcupine Tree.

  63. S.... M....

This was the song, many years ago, that first made Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree "click" in my head and my heart. I suddenly really HEARD his voice, I really FELT the meaning, I understood all of the pain. I have been continuously listening to Steven Wilson, Porcupine Tree, and all the other bands on that web of associated artists, for almost a decade now....... has it really been that long?
    TIIIIIIIIIME FLIES!!!

  64. D.... S....

Before I knew it, 17 years has passed since I saw Procupine Tree at NEARFest 2001... and I love Steven Wilson's solo music even more.

    this reminds me.

  70. J.... J....

I hear so many 90's songs in this.

  71. K.... K....

responsibility has everything to do with RIGHT

  72. V.... S....

Music is the only good achievement at top for humankind.

  73. L.... F....

I think this song has a lot of Pink Floyd's song "Dogs". the intro riff for example!

  74. R.... P....

This is fantastic. Progressive music just about always incorporates the sounds and techniques of other bands. The mixing of all the different sounds together - with all its emotion, drama and contrast - is what makes prog music such a delight for the mind.

  75. J.... ....

its a homage to pink floyd stuff...wilson is immensely inspired by their music....this one has elements of dogs from animals and time from dark side

  84. B.... L....

This is basically exactly what I was thinking this music video would look like. I'm glad steven wilson and the producer thought the same.

  85. T.... P....
