Porcupine Tree - So Called Friend Lyrics

Lip read, a mountain stream, fibres in the car
Shut down, a cheerless a town, a head rolls in the park

Once seen my libertine undresses in the dark
She puts her love inside to break us both apart

With you I felt brand new, you opened up the sky
What need to punish me with surgery and lies?

Sleep well my so called friend, a virus in your heart
She bends my so called friend and rips my life apart

In sound escape is found from carving out the day
My gift a weight that lifts, my eyes give me away

You tell me all the things you know
I want to hear
You stain the sub terrain
With sarin gas and fear

What kind of friend are you?
What kind of friend are you?
You're so cold
What kind of friend are you?
What kind of friend are you?
So Called Friend

I miss the holy bliss of sun across the bed
How sad that all my plans seem foolish now instead

anyone know the sticking for the fill at 2:02? been bugging me for a while

    B.... ....

Yes I transcribed it for you and posted it on my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/B6QTQmDpAzb/?igshid=1ewk4yki6qnp0

  2. A.... F....

    PT are the best!!!!!

  3. C.... L....

this song is so cool i cant even

  4. K.... H....

Me encanta que el video diga .flv porque implica que bajó el video de alguna página oficial de Porcupine Tree cuando el .flv era el formato por defecto de internet, como youtube

  5. D.... B....

Little are mentioning John Wesley. His tribute to PT in those years is awesome. His playing and voice hits the right vibes.

  6. M.... m....

Gavin God of drums, unfortunately I'm an atheist

  7. D.... V....

1:16 - Mr Gavin Harrison everyone, lifting the rhythmic complexity and interest in music wherever he appears.

  8. J.... M....

holy shit gavin. the bsides are where he really shows what he can do

  9. K.... S....

And there are people out there now who think that SW playing PT songs now with his current band is the equivalent of this.....well,no...it's not.....

  10. L.... M....

Love the cymbal work and the overriding that Gavin does in the chorus!

  11. M.... H....

    Please upload this in HQ!!

  12. U.... S....

    Awesome

  13. A.... M....

    Gavin nailed it!

    A.... M....

Arpan Majumder they all always do

  14. H.... B....

    THE coolest bassist!

  15. J.... H....

I know you well, better than anyone. Tool Part of me rip off

  16. A.... R....

    the riff is cool!

  17. N.... S....

Wow.. The swung feel of this 7 is crazy!!

  18. h.... ....

"Part Of Me" - Tool anyone?

  19. G.... ....

The drums in this performance are fucking flawless, especially that cymbal work! Hail the mighty Gavin Harrison!!!

    G.... ....

I love Gavin's drumming; He is an incredible percussionist.

  20. R.... N....

    Gavin Harrison, my master!

    R.... N....

RN: Kneel down before me--you shall be my human sacrifice!

  21. j.... r....

Everything about this is a rush up my spine into some kind of star nursery in my brain. Porcupine Tree has been my mantra for a decade. Yet the new Steven Wilson band kicks it up another notch - Luminol - please! Are you kidding me??!!! AMAZING!

  22. m.... ....

Trying to practice along with the track. Absolutely a cakewalk in terms of the notes, but damn that 7/4 is hard to hold. Especially when trying to sing and play the guitar at the same time.

  23. S.... S....

    Sounds like an Amplifier song

    S.... S....

Another GREAT band. If you like this look up Amplifier.

  24. E.... R....

He plays notes absolute fantastic looks like Henrik Danhage (Evergrey) and David Gilmour. He is not a machine but he took sounds never see before.

  25. J.... S....

    Damn this song rrrrriiippppsss !!!!!

  26. F.... ....

for me sounds like the sweet sound of perfect circle, ...

    F.... ....

While I love Perfect Circles sound I don't quite think they can hang the the Tree. Gavin is by far a better drummer, than pretty much anyone. SW is a much more diverse song writer too but all that aside I'm really glad both bands exist and they both are awesome

  27. f.... ....

Gavins cymbal work in the choruses and bridge is fucking fantastic.

  28. A.... H....

sounds more like "fuck me to punish me"

    A.... H....

+Anthony Hanna Wow, now that you say that, that's the new lyrics for this song for me.

    A.... H....

    Can't be unheard

  29. D.... E....

    Gavin "máster" Harrison !

    D.... E....

    He is unmatchable.

    D.... E....

    favorite drummer of all time.

  30. K.... ....

This is not a Tool ripoff.

  31. M.... ....

Woa this sounds a lot like a tool song hahaha holy shit, trying to remember which one. but i'm certain it was from Undertow or Opiate.

    M.... ....

    @MJKTool Yeah Flood.

    M.... ....

    Probably Part of me?

    M.... ....

@TheHumanIlusion problem was solved three months ago, it's flood, not part of me. derp.

    M.... ....

almost identical guitar riff. they explored the idea differently; one is clearly a tool song, the other clearly a tree porcupine song

    M.... ....

@MJKTool open car sounds like part of me

  32. g.... s....

Melody so similar to rolling stones' paint it black !

    g.... s....

Never noticed that until you pointed it out.

  33. M.... B....

    Excellent Steven!

  34. p.... ....

4 people are deaf and stupid...
And Tool is great but PT is definitely NOT a Tool ripoff. Their overall sound is so different from one another. Who the heck is saying that crap? Lol

    p.... ....

+metalqueen17 Nobody is saying they ripped off tool, it just sounds similar. Tool\s song Flood is in 13/8 anyway... this entire song is in 7/8.

  35. C.... M....

    My Children are grown

    C.... M....

    Master !

  36. N.... S....

This world is just getting smaller by the day..
someday you wont be able to fart without payng copyrights..
    (hey theres a smelly idea...)

  37. R.... H....

to join the conversation this is the reason Steve Wilson hates comparisons of his work. Check the interview with Morow for fear of a blank planet he hates releasing a record cuz even if the critic likes the record he compares PT to some band he dislikes, misunderstands a lyric. etc. PT are incomparable!!

  38. A.... ....

Who in this whole god damn world insulted porcupine tree ??? I fuck you with all my heart ......fuck youuuuuuuuuuuuu who insulted PT

    A.... ....

    https://youtu.be/RWjwsPVfms4

  39. C.... ....

Count your blessings - last PT video I was on, some idiot was accusing them of ripping off Deathcab...

'Scuse me, I just threw up a bit in my mouth...

  40. D.... ....

Thanks for posting this Marius, people can be real jerkoffs when it comes to promoting their favourite artists by putting down others,

  41. S.... J....

    daaru god hota hai

  42. S.... J....

    yo yo yo

  43. S.... J....

    yo lode

  44. S.... J....

    yo lode

  45. k.... ....

    amazing!!!!!!!!

  46. P.... V....

true that . the best pair of 4 limbs are gavin's :D

  47. m.... ....

    john wesley

  48. O.... ....

Who's the guy who always sings backup?

  49. A.... ....

    I can't blame you.

  50. I.... ....

Bonus track on Deadwing I think.

  51. M.... ....

probably something with RLRR in it, he does combinations of it a lot

  52. o.... ....

Anyone know what album this is off of? Can't find it anywhere

  53. M.... ....

Is it hard for anyone else to imagine Porcupine Tree without this line-up?

  54. n.... B....

Oh, Gavin. I totally have a crush on him.

  55. r.... k....

    I would do Steven Wilson.

  56. z.... ....

I love this song. These guys rock!!

  57. P.... M....

@GoofyGirly2010: It's "What need to punish me with surgery and lies?"

  58. N.... ....

    @euphoricanomaly 7/4

  59. K.... ....

@17primemover yea I definitely agree, the song Flood by Tool at about 4:30 in, almost the exact same riff. but I also agree with @MusicIzTheAnswer that Steven Wilson is far too creative to rip someone off

  60. E.... ....

Fuck me to Punish Me? ......Sounds good to me Steven

  61. E.... ....

Steven is usually the one making me melt, but Gavin is so damn amazing and a hell of a MAN!

  62. M.... S....

    @muntificator or me...xD

  63. 1.... ....

Some parts of this song sound like Tool...but with about 20 times more talent.

  64. E.... ....

Dear God, I am so mesmerized by Steven. It sounds so damn corny but I am in Love with everything about him, his mind is intoxicating

  65. J.... H....

What kind of friend doesn´t like porcupine tree?

    J.... H....

    A so called friend

  66. M.... ....

love the way the band use different time signatures such as 7/4.9/4. shows creativity and experssion

  67. E.... ....

    Steven melts me

  68. j.... ....

@Mantooth901 Nope. Read the lyrics online. It's "What need to punish me ...?"

  69. M.... ....

@jaminlikesdrums Oh dang he says "What need" hahaha

  70. M.... ....

    @jaminlikesdrums ...does he not?

  71. M.... ....

    4:13
Quick summary of epicness in song.

  72. j.... ....

I always think he says "Fuck me to punish me" at 0:58

    j.... ....

    jaminlikesdrums mmm

  73. G.... S....

Honestly, seeing bands pay homage to Tool in a way like this just assures Tool's influence to me. Its a great honor, showing that they have definitely left a very large mark on music. Look at all the bands that pay tribute to Led Zeplin or Pink Floyd by doing what Porcupine Tree has done.

  74. A.... C....

Yes, the riff is very similar, but Porcupine tree are about as far from rip off artists as it gets!

  75. D.... S....

SW is a self-confessed Tool fan, so any imitation is an homage.

  76. B.... ....

@melliemichelle1 its not a ripoff, its a nod

  77. R.... S....

    @melliemichelle1

I would've guessed the riff was a rip off of Tool's "Part of Me," but that works too...

  78. M.... C....

@MrsChadam Care because it's a ripoff. I'd be more inclined to have respect for this group if they came up with their own, not 'borrowed' almost note for note from someone else.

  79. A.... v....

    @melliemichelle1 care.

  80. M.... C....

Fucking hell - intro to this song is a Tool ripoff. 'Flood' by Tool, at 4 minutes in, is the original to this riff.

  81. g.... ....

    @fadaboey arriving somewhere

  82. L.... V....

@nitarbell In Lazarus single appears Lazarus, So called Friend and Half Light and is studio recording.
Please Guys stop comparing Porcupine Tree they have their own sound

  83. J.... S....

@usmcsdi69 Beiber jokes are like Chuck norris jokes now...they were funny once..and only once

  84. h.... ....

    groovy.

  85. H.... Y....

@stubbscoil it is a kick ass album by the way the album released or still that 3 tracks ?

  86. u.... ....

ONE asslick dislikes..... probably looking for a Justin Beiber video!

  87. s.... ....

Anyone who likes this song should check riverside's latest albums- pretty much similar..

  88. g.... ....

    @AdMDrumz
man i agree the riff is a lot similar to tool's song but dont forget it isnt the main riff that makes the whole song..what about the drums the vocals the lyrics?..

  89. G.... C....

Monster Drummer, great Job Gavin. We both had mothers that would let us play all day, loud and just say "sounded good" parent's children great thing can happen.

  90. N.... A....

A recording does exist, and also appears on their Arriving Somewhere... DVD/CD, but I don't know if there's a studio recording of the song (maybe that's the version in the Deadwing LP, I don't know).

  91. B.... ....

@nitarbell Actually, a recording of "So Called Friend" was released on the 2005 "Lazarus" single (in Germany and Poland only).

  92. W.... ....

    Their from sparta!

  93. t.... ....

wait, no recording of this song exists? lol I know I have a live recording from arriving somewhere... I'm just now really dissecting Porcupine Tree. First song I heard was Radioactive Toy, then Start of Something Beautiful... and it just progressed from there, I've been an addict ever since. In Absentia is my fav but I like ANYTHING Steven Wilson has even been a part of. Everything he touches is gold. I'm seriously in love.

  94. N.... A....

    @LMA0NAISE
    ...

    FFFUUU-

But no recording of that song exists, at least according to Steven.

  95. K.... B....

@nitarbell Including Cryogenics? If so, colour me impressed.

  96. m.... ....

78 of the veiws are probably me.

  97. T.... ....

Gavin at 3:04 - 4:00 melts me with those cymbals/chimes

  98. N.... A....

    @Ambulanceo
Actually, when I think of it, I haven't listened to Metanoia yet, but that's it.
