Porcupine Tree - Heartattack In A Layby Lyrics
I pull off the road
East of Baldock and Ashford
Feeling for my cell
In the light from the dashboard
The smell of rain in the air con
Maybe check the news
Or just put a tape on
Lighting up a smoke
I've got this feeling inside me
Don't feel too good
If I close my eyes
And fell asleep in this layby
The fever pushing the day by
Motor window wind
I could do with some fresh air
Can't breathe too well
(She waits for me. Home waits for me.)
I guess I should go now
To tell me she's sorry
And how much she missed me
I guess I'm just burnt out
I really should slow down
I'm perfectly fine but
I just need to lie down
We'll grow old together
We'll grow old together
We'll grow old together...

Porcupine Tree Heartattack In A Layby Comments
Who else is high?
From their best album
como faz para parar de ouvir esta musica ? muito viciada aqui gente.
First song I've ever come even close to crying. Pretty damn close, too.
incredible
I can swim in this song forever
bu şarkının hissettirdikleri çok farklı..
This song is incredible. It communicates such a specific vibe.
This song always destroyed me. Even when I was a lot younger hearing it, I could put myself in his place. He's dying in the layby, she's at home waiting for him, there's been an argument and he won't get home. Jesus man its tragic. She waits for me, we'll grow old together. Unbelievable writing, tares your heart apart.
It is a song you shouldn't listen while you are high(and Burden by Opeth)
This and "Weakness" by Opeth are the saddest songs I have ever heard.
I love them both so much.
Try "I will" by Radiohead

"we'll grow old together..."
I didn't really comprehend the lyrics so I didn't feel anything listening to it although I liked the tune.
The song is about a guy who has had a fight with his wife. He then storms off in his car to cool off. At some point he pulls off the road. He lights up a smoke and doesn't feel good. After a little while he decides it's time to go home he just needs to lie down. He reflects on his relationship and has a very optmistic view on this. He wants to grow old with his wife and he's confident they'll figure out their disagreements. He then has a heartattack in the layby and he dies before he gets to see her again - meaning that a terrible fight was the very last interaction the two of them ever had. In Steven Wilson's owm words this is a song about regret. I love this song. Musically it may be the saddest and the most beautiful song I have ever heard.
I just rewatched parts of an interview with Steven Wilson where he talks about the song (among many other things). My description wasn't entirely accurate. You can hear the interview here - he talks about Heartattack in a Layby at the 7 minutes and 26 seconds mark: https://www.facebook.com/StevenWilsonHQ/videos/1193098617377065

Im fucking drowning!
PT & Steve Wilson are amazing!! My parents introduced me to these guys a few years back. The subjects Steve Wilson writes about (Kneel & Disconnect for example) are interesting. They cover many diverse subjects. They have true talent!!
your parents rock!
Check out Opeth too!
Also, Steven Wilson made an album - "Storm Corrosion" - with Mikael from Opeth and it's awesome.
Nothing to add, nothing to take away. Simple as that.

We are grow old together that part breaks me up u_u
Cool track.
I didnt know this song until i saw a Q&A with Steven Wilson in which he answered a fan question telling the story or the meaning behind the song. i paused that video and came here right away.
EddieGuitarz Where can I find this Q&A?

Right here. He talks about it at the 7 minutes and 26 seconds mark - give or take :).
Saw Steven live yesterday and they performed this! I never expected to hear this live, ever. Got teary eyed immediately.
Saw him on Saturday, played this. Teary too. Not as much as when I saw Routine live, but still...wow.
The moment when the acoustic guitar rings out, it just melts me
Face
Arms
Speech
Time to act.
"it just melts me"
I cannot even describe what this song does in my heart...
"our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thoughts" this song absolutely crystallizes this very thought
This is probably the saddest and most beautiful song I have ever heard. INCREDIBLE!
The sorrow hits me hard at 2:12 even though I have no experience of my own to draw a parallel to this song. The feeling of dying with regrets, even though I don't fear dying with regrets. This song is pure divinity.
jesus christ RPG, what a crock of pompus fuckery.
Even if they play a single note, I will listen to it. Love you porcupine tree..
Thank you Frey.
Ed O'Neal! :D
Great lyrics and even more beautiful vocal arrangements in the 2nd part
The saddest song I've ever heard.
Captures the devastated feeling after a breakup better than most
Yup, also "weakness" by Opeth.
Snuff mate.
what a song omfg amazing
After the sad demise of Rick Wright & knowing Floyd would never tour or write again I lost my sense of direction. That was until I found PT, Airbag, Bjorn Riis & Stephen Wilson.
@ian armistead Still have David Gilmours solo stuff
+ian armistead And the world was richer for it... and the rest is history!
Like Gilmour as well, but it's not Floyd is it.
Thank you so much for that comment, I checked out Airbag and they are absolutely amazing!

+aburlingham0915 Best lyrics ever. A song about regret, the siren sound by SW at the end is haunting as he passes away into another world. The vocal layering is genius.
+Dave Night He is a lyrical genius. Or at least that's what I feel.
Baldock And Ashford are both close to Hemel Hempstead where Steven grew up and still lives. 🙂
WOW YOU LISTENED TO IT TOO
ахуенно.
One of my favorite tree songs.
god bless PT. They're absolutely magnificent
No other band or ex girlfriend has made me cry more than PT.
Stunning.
I second that
Some say he’s still crying to this day...
Beth Gibbons - The Show, if you like a good cry
Simply beautiful
