It really hurts...

One of those bands I listened a lot to, when I was a kid and teenager. My taste has changed a bit since then and I do not really listen to PT anymore. But every now and then I come back to them, and when I do that it is always this song. One of the best breakup/broken heart songs ever, just timeless. Amazing outro. The way Steven says "thanks"(for listening to the whole album?) + the synths are just something else :)

every time I listen to this and I hear the line "you can pretend that I don't exist for you", I marvel at the duality of the meaning...perhaps only one meaning was intended, but I've always heard two. "you can pretend that I don't exist in your world" and "you can pretend that you're not the reason I exist". such a beautiful song, first place I'll go next time I get my heart broken ^_^

hey, i've been there. i've put this song on repeat. i've been a shithole and it took me long to get out of it. it's not easy, but i already know you gonna get out og it, because of your attitude of keeping going on. that's what saved me, along with being positive to myself, loving myself (which is a whole work in itself), and loving the people around me. It gets better. There are still some pieces of me stuck behind, but I'm good. I've grown. I hope the same for you. We will get so much better!

A touch of specificity adds so much to the emotion and authenticity behind the lyrics. I wish more musicians/artists/lyricists incorporated it into their works.

I actually completely disagree with that. I actually hate specificity. For instance I really don't like how he even mentioned "Facebook" and "iPad" in one of his other songs.

Good lyrics, imo, should not never hint at anything specific and relevant to current times or past. They should be true and have meaning no matter if someone from the 18th century or 21st sentry listens to them.

Who cares if Facebook is named Facebook? It could have been named something else. You see what I'm saying? The word "Facebook" could be substituted for something more fundamental, like "society" or whatever.

I actually feel it harder to relate to a song when it gets too specific.

This is such an underrated album. Not that all Porcupine Tree albums aren't, but let's be real ... Feel So Low? Do people just not get it. Sure, there's Hatesong, Shesmovedon, and Four Chords, but there's Last Chance to Evacuate Earth Before It's Recycled and The Rest Will Flow! Nuff said. This is one of the best records ever recorded, yet most don't even know it or they exist! Works great for me though; always have great seats for U.S. shows! God, I wish I was born in the UK!

Heartbreak sucks. That said, this song wouldn't exist if someone didn't do it to Steven. We all go through it - he just happened to channel his emotions into a beautful song that I, and everyone else, can relate to so easily.

Humanity is made of people whose thoughts are limited in number.
If we're lucky enough, every now and then, a giant artist creates a song like this one, whose meaning is shared by a lot of people that can express their equivalent just by talking. These people can listen to this song and be grateful to the fate.
Of course they can be grateful to the artist as well. I am.
