Porcupine Tree - Deadwing Lyrics

And something warm and soft just passed through here
It took the precious things that I hold dearer
It rifled through the grey and disappeared
The creeping darkness makes the small hours clearer

Like a cancer scare
In the dentist's chair
Sucking in the air
Wire across the stair
Kicking down the door
At your local store
With the world at war
Voices through the floor
Unexpected news
Wearing high heeled shoes
Blowing out the fuse
Paying all your dues
Deadwing lullaby
Like a fracture tied
It's a worthless lie
To the public eye

I don't take waifs and strays back home with me
My bleeding heart does not extend to charity

Yes I'd have to say I like my privacy
And did you know you're on closed circuit TV? So smile at me

And a dream you had
Of your mum and dad
On a beach somewhere
And the poison air
With the cancer threat
In a cigarette
Deadwing lullaby
Find a place to hide

And from the yellow windows of the last train
A spectre from the next life breathes his fog on the pane
I look with you into the speeding black rain
Afraid to touch someone, afraid to ask her for her name

And in the morning when I find I have lost you
I throw a window open wide and step through

Porcupine Tree Deadwing Comments
  1. X.... ....

the only reason this hasn't been played live yet by PT or Wilson himself is that no one on this earth can play that solo like Belew does. Chills!

  2. j.... s....

    Magnifico como siempre Steven Wilson

  3. G.... ....

Never heard of them. Maybe just the name, but wasn't interested in checking. Few days ago I was scrolling through some soup.io posts (mostly stupid funny memes) and one of them led me to somebody's chart (top 5 of this month..) - "OK, Porcupine Tree on top. Let's check this". Wooooooaaah - This is so IMPRESSIVE. Pure gold into ears.

  4. K.... H....

una lástima que no hay versiones de este temaso grabadas en vivo, solo hay bootlegs (disponibles en soulseek), añaracope guare Esteban Wilson, pudiste haber grabado este temaso 😢

  7. O.... S....

Can't get over how good the transition is from the solo to the first chorus

  8. J.... H....

Most underrated song on the album, Deadwing and Lazarus are imo the two best on Deadwing.

  9. f.... ....

I'm 52 and have a huge music collection of various styles. I love prog rock... Rush, Floyd, Eloy, Argent, King Crimson old Genesis and others. Never heard of these guys until a few days ago, when I saw their name on a random website and got curious. Freakin' classic! I have heard a few more songs by them over the last day or two and I'm loving the journey. I'm sure they will stand tall among the greats of my collection.

  10. O.... ....

  20. J.... ....

I've finally found my groove with Porcupine Tree and started getting into their music after a couple of false starts.

Don't hate me, but the intro has clear overtones of "Jurassic Shift"-era Ozric Tentacles - which is a good thing! :o)

  21. R.... A....

It's really difficult to pick a favorite PT album but if I was forced to choose it would be Deadwing

  30. R.... D....

I named my son Gavin for a reason. It aint because of bush.

    R.... D....

    Great reason !

    R.... D....

No offense, but Bush is a great band in my opinion

    R.... D....

    I prefer Rush.

Mr J Young, age is only a number. Nothing to worry about. I'm about your age, whenever i listen to stuff that i love, i felt younger spiritually. Enjoy what you like to the very last minute. We only been here for only once may be. So open up, fill your days with a little joy. Bless

    oh ok thnks :)

    m.... w....

    although he would deny this!

    m.... w....

Well it's progressive but at the same time alternative rock.

    m.... w....

Well, he came around eventually and surrendered to that label.

    m.... w....

Prog rock, exactly what I wish Opeth wasn't.

  44. g.... b....

    Rush.....more than Rush??no.....listen again!

    g.... b....

Steven Wilson is a huge rush fan.

  46. P.... H....

New to PT & just can't believe I've missed such brilliant music. I thought I knew all the "good" stuff ... How wrong was I (?) and what a discovery PT are. My musical journey is as good as complete now I've found this glorious sound.

    P.... H....

    Don't forget the others!

    P.... H....

Fair enough! Grace for Drowning is my favourite, followed by Insurgentes. But they're quite dark and experimental. It took a while for them to grow on me.

    P.... H....

    And 4 n a half ;) Brother

    P.... H....

Paul H your musical journey is never complete. Ever.

    P.... H....

I have missed it also untill 5 years ago. And now, even they don't play together anymore I love PT so much. Love Steven's soloalbums but PT stays more favorite.

  47. M.... A....

My freinds, family and people I know have never even heard of this band. I want to tell everyone about them, but then I want to keep all this to myself !

  48. G.... J....

    This song is amazing

  49. j.... i....

    8:24 FUCK! Gavin!

  50. B.... U....

The author of the 2nd solo is worth checking

  51. L.... M....

    I sent me here..

  52. S.... ....

I hear a cat off in the distance...a big electric one at that...

    S.... ....

I think I hear it too (meow)

  53. B.... a....

PT it's for sure one of my favorites rock bands. I love this darkness feeling that they express!

  54. M.... T....

amazing how over this heavy music is the ethereal voice of Steven Wilson.

    M.... T....

Beautiful contrast! The guy is brilliant!

  55. M.... ....

I love this album, except I can't get into this song. I usually skip it and begin with Shallow. I know I'm weird.

    M.... ....

"Shallow is shit" - Steven Wilson

    M.... ....

soba music Where did he say that? o:

    M.... ....

    @kalkwiese
I saw him in NY a couple of years ago and he said that after hinting that he thought some of his earlier work wasn't good.

    M.... ....

Shallow is SO much fun to play on guitar though and relatively easy. That slide down with drop D *moan* So good lmao. My ear likes this song more, but the whole album is awesome start to finish, I'd love to get it on vinyl. "Until the morning I had found I had lost you, I throw a window open wide and step through" that line gets me every time.

    M.... ....

But like _Shallow_ is my "I'm fucking full of hate, back the fuck up bitch" song. I can understand why he thinks his eariler stuff isn't good, but I personally enjoy it and I know many others do too.

  56. T.... P....

I'm tired, this music, is certiably watermelon, 9/11

    T.... P....

Lack of a question mark 7/11, thank you, come again

    T.... P....

Kenpachi just realized jet fuel can't melt steel beams

    T.... P....

    remember the Alamo?

  57. D.... D....

Is the effect from 3:51 to 4:00 vibrato? It's sounds like a shivering sound they use a lot

    D.... D....

+Drake Davis Not exactly. I think it sounds more like a very fast chorus or phaser. If you're not familiar with these terms a chorus is an effect that adds the same note(s) the guitar is playing but at a very slightly lower pitch which produces that warbling, vibrating effect. A phaser makes the sound oscillate in tone making it brighter and darker. A vibrato is a back and forth oscillation of pitch.

    D.... D....

Could be a Leslie speaker (or an effect that simulates one).

  58. B.... W....

    I love this!!

  59. M.... ....

Very Opeth-like song, replace the soft-low-voice passages with growl and this would made a typical BWP Opeth song

    M.... ....

    ............

    M.... ....

Pretty sure Steven is their Mixer.

    M.... ....

mikael akerfeldt does the vocal harmonys on this song and also the 2nd guitar solo on arriving.

    M.... ....

The guitar solo here is by the master Adrian Belew !  , of course you can find similitudes with Opeth , Steve Wilson produced  them 3 times  .. and he take a little bit of metal sound from them to Porcupine...

  60. S.... ....

my bleeding heart does not extend to charity.. damn what a genius line! i'm not a lyrics guy more like a monkey but that line says it all right there. great song album & band

  61. m.... ....

Interesting the main riff seems to be nicked from Led Zeppelin's "In My Time of Dying".

    m.... ....

    Yes !!!!

    m.... ....

And Leed Zep nicked it from Blind willie Johnson its original title was Jesus make up my dying bed. I learned to play it on cigar box guitar

  62. E.... K....

same , found them about 7 years ago , didnt quite understand , then it all clicked ....

  65. F.... 6....

I'm 61 and had given up on any 'new' music coming around. Then due to a comment made by someone I found PT. Been on a 8 month tear. Every time I look around I find another jewel. Yes, I really did 'Stumble onto Something".!

    F.... 6....

Hello I´m 48 and It is happening to me right now, every time I look around I find another PT jewel. The last one was "The start of something Beautiful"
    I found SW through OPETH.

    F.... 6....

I am young and i am lucky that i found them but i missed their live performances by a year or two.

    F.... 6....

    Best ever

    F.... 6....

    something beautiful

    F.... 6....

Listen to Steven Wilson's solo work it's wayyy better. This is mediocre at BEST

  68. J.... G....

Opening measures sound a like "Achilles' Last Stand."  Loves me some PT.

  69. F.... G....

This goes into a PT greatest hits collection.  LOL.

    F.... G....

    so does all their songs

  70. O.... ....

    Wuant send me here :D

  71. j.... ....

Wuant made me come here! #moarwuant

  72. W.... G....

I'm a 59 year 'young' geezer...into Floyd, Zappa, Dead and just discovered these guys..IMPRESSIVE !!

    W.... G....

Love Zappa! One of my favourites! 😊

    W.... G....

    wolb em

    W.... G....

Check out Haken you might like them too. And the aristocrats for some badass jazz rock prog

    W.... G....

    Wils Getchell totally agree.

  73. K.... S....

One of the best album openers ever.

    K.... S....

    I love this song.

    K.... S....

Couldn't agree with you more. I mean, if you have THAT to open your album, what could go wrong?

    K.... S....

I think it's their best song. I don't really even like the guitar breaks.

  74. G.... C....

    5.18 lethal weapon theme

  75. B.... ....

This song's pretty good. But I'm much more into nusludgescreamodoomcore.

    B.... ....

    @BigElectricBull1981 nusludgescreamodoomcore for life!

    B.... ....

    +Richard A Ain't that the truth!

    B.... ....

    +BigElectricBull1981 lolz

  76. x.... ....

I love the subway train intro.

  77. T.... ....

One of my favorite albums right here, the feels are real.

  78. M.... ....

This reminds me of space exploration

  79. .... M....

    SONZERA

  80. D.... G....

    I like this song a lot :)

  81. B.... ....

This track is unique, Nothing like it has been produced before and nothing like it will ever be. That, by default, makes it extremely special.

  82. G.... M....

Always loved this. Even more so now I've just found out Adrian Belew (King Crimson) plays the guitar solo!

    G.... M....

and Mikael Akerfeldt on back vocals

    G.... M....

The song becomes 50% more enjoyable

    G.... M....

I thought it was Mikael Akerfeldt playing the solo?!

    G.... M....

Wow, didn’t know Adrian knew how to play that way... not a KC guy, but I’ve heard him and surprised nonetheless

    G.... M....

@Daniel Winschel Heard it right away. Give the Discipline album a go, and you shall realise what a brilliant guitarist Adrian is.

  83. S.... ....

Try to imagine some growling with that riff !

    S.... ....

I feel the same on the heaviest part of arriving something but not here

    S.... ....

No garbage disposal growling needed here. Let the music do the talking.

    S.... ....

@Audio Fidelity Definitely no garbage disposal growling like metalcore. More like emotional, primal grows like in Opeth or Insomnium!

    S.... ....

    @Sawed-off Orc  Agreed.

    S.... ....

@SlipKoRnSaad nah, porcupine tree isn't growling music. steven wilson has a clear and concise style of singing that fits with the music. alot of otherwise good bands start sucking when the vocalist opens his/her dumbass mouth.

  84. M.... S....

one of the best songs ever

  85. a.... s....

There is still hope for Rock, Other wise, Shit has hit the fan in terms of modern day music ..

    a.... s....

Well, thats not really true. All mainstream music these days is pretty bad. But away from the mainstream (in rock, hip-hop, soul, dance etc) music remains good

    a.... s....

MegaLotusEater all are shit except for rock and metal

    a.... s....

Not every hip-hop song these days sucks, but it's even more difficult to find something good, if we compare it to rock and metal. This comment is 3 years old now, but popular music has really went downhill since then, you know?

    a.... s....

Hip hop is still amazing. Rock is still amazing. Punk is still amazing. Pop is still amazing. Metal is still garbage. Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to listen to Hand Cannot Erase ;)

  86. f.... ....

    4:13 Nice!

  87. W.... ....

Man. This version is really too compressed.

    W.... ....

we need flac on youtube lol

    W.... ....

    +Joshua VD here, here! #FirstWorldProblems

  88. L.... ....

Such a great song. Only wished the rest of the album would stay just as heavy.

    L.... ....

Alas, SW is more poet than rocker. Try to find a PT SIDE that is heavy throughout, let alone a whole album.

  89. M.... N....

Respect people who admire all three of them. I came here to listen some music, not to watch all of you arguing which one of them is the best. What does "better" mean? Everyone has its own music taste -  implying that they're wrong is not okay. I like the color comparision comment - fits well.

    M.... N....

@Marcin Nowicki thank you because all things in taste are the result of the perception of the beholder

  90. m.... ....

One of the best rock tracks of modern times

  91. a.... ....

    Rewelacyjny utwór, bardzo oryginalnie wykreowany, specyficzny, niepokojący nastrój. Dwa całkowicie różne sola gitary, oba zapierające dech w piersiach. Warto sprawdzić czyjego autorstwa jest drugie z nich ;

  92. A.... B....

    Stevie W is God!!

  93. N.... P....

Shut your traps and listen to the music! Don't talk about other bands here. You selected this video because it said "Porcupine Tree - Deadwing". Not because it said Pink Floyd or Radiohead or anything else... so shut it!!

  94. t.... e....

This band is pure galactic class, virtually still unknown in the former U.S. after 20 plus years.... Duh!
And yes, FacultyBob, they do indeed CRUSH Radiohead.
