Poppe, Maddie - Don't Ever Let Your Children Grow Up Lyrics
That was the way, that was the way it was
When you're five years old and don't have nowhere else to run
Except into your mother's arms, where she held you so tight
And you're scared of the dark so you sleep with your little night light
When you learned your numbers and shapes and played pretend
You didn't mind that your hair was a mess, you were so carefree
You didn't know how cold and cruel this world would one day be
We were just so young
We should have known
We should have known
That one day we'd hate our bodies and we'd orbit around buttons on a phone
We should have known
That one day we'd pluck our eyebrow hairs and wonder why the cool kids stared at me
Our imaginations have run dry
We hate ourselves and have a nightly cry
And then we act like we're fine
It's alcohol and bombs and drugs, don't ever let your children grow up
(Oh oh oh...)
We would swing on the swings and jump off and pretend we could fly
But as soon as we blinked we grew up and we're junior high
So our dads dropped us off at the park and we stayed out 'till ten
So the makeup comes out and we think we need the perfect boyfriend
We were just so young
How didn't we know
How didn't we know
That we'd be independent on our own and lose more friends while traveling down the road
Oh, how didn't we know
That there's more to life than sleepovers and jocks turn out worse than the science nerds
But somehow that all gets blurred
And some relationships they end real fast
And though you want you might never get it back
The doors close just like that
It's depression and it's broken love, don't ever let your children grow up
(Oh oh oh...)
We're no longer young
So now that we know
So now that we know
That this world could use some turning 'round, if only we could find some common ground
But it's up to us
And although at times it gets so rough, you have got to let your children grow up
Yeah, you have got to let your children, got to let your children grow up

She deserved the win. I love this song.
I love the song so much....she deserved the win
My fav song knew she was gonna win she reminds me of Katie and Norah
She should not have won. Gabby is wayy better
Ha. Most of America laughs at this.
So glad she won, she got all my votes! I can’t get this song out of my head

an amazing voice that fits an amazing song.😊
This song gives me literal chills every time I listen.
Thank you america for finally getting it right. My parents are also from Iowa and we all have been rooting for her since day 1. Maddie your amazing girl!
Here’s my take on this. Maddie Poppe is an AMAZING singer, humble and sweet. But it’s still weird and suspicious to me that the top three look like Fox News clones. All white and blonde. Meanwhile the charismatic black kid, the weird and talented redhead, and the Hispanic drag queen, who were all WAY better than the #2 and #3 picks got voted out too early. While I’ll look for Maddie and Caleb’s albums, I’ll be doing all I can to support Catie Turner, Ada Vox, and Michael J Woodward in their future careers
She’s really the best! She deserved it!
Her original song is beautiful and so much better than the song Idol wrote for her to sing. Kudos to Maddie
Still mesmerised by this song.. ❤
Sex to my ears 💗
.....ah sure.
You are awesome MADDIE POPPE!!! WE love you and so happy you won the Idol! ! You deserve it! !
I can see why she won American Idol. She’s really good!
Love this young lady, sings her heart out. Stays true to herself and dresses nice, no need to sell sex just her voice.
She makes me cry with her angelic voice 👼
And she did win as I predicted 😼
I love Maddie. She reminds me, Marlyn Monroe.
One of the MANY reasons why Maddie won is that she is a songwriter. It is terribly difficult to market a singer who doesn't write their own music. Maddie has an entire album on Spotify, so give it a listen.
It's a good thing she didn't get through on The Voice. Idol is the show which builds real industry careers.
Luke sucks BTW.
Why does she look just like Grace Davies???
Such a wonderful song, perfect graduation song. Class day song.
Thank you for making a very wonderful song. I'm crying just first time listening to this. Thank you, thank you so much for the feeling you shared through this song.
I loved this song right away when you sang it for the first time. I listened to it so many times! Love you Maddie. You're so amazing. 💓
I love her voice "authentic"...
Wow what a moving song and very good too! Pure talent
Her voice Like dido to me ❤️
Ella es adorable ! La mejor Maddie Poppe 💐👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I predict she will be the next Taylor Swift. Love her voice.
Woohoo! Ms.Maddie just won American idol! America loves you kid😉 I hope this doesn't mean you're done singing local shows in Iowa.
This song brings so many memories.
Absolutely amazing
Amazing song 😘
I want to buy this song. She needs to make a ablum with her originals.
A Maddie original song, love it! That’s why she’s the winner! Congrats!
Maddie is boring. Hideous performance. She’ll be another winner that gets lost ... real fast
OMG i am crying my eyes out!!!
She would look good with long hair too!
She won!! 😭😭😭 because I’m sooo happy!!
She has not an original voice at all.. Copy of a copy of a copy..
Who is she a copy of?
Where can I buy this song?! So good. Screw that one they wrote for her. Can’t wait for her album.
ya dia yg menang season ini, american sweetheart .. jenis penyanyi begini kesukaan amerika sekali
Shirley Temple came alive😍😍
Maddie you are lovely, authentic, original ... all-around beautiful. Congrats on the win!
When she sings she channels all her inner feels...when she writes she does what all great songwriters do..she goes to that magical place where her muse brings the lyrics to her and gifts her with the verses...the blend is always "special"....
I didn't know this was an original song until afterwards, but boy is she an amazing songwriter and performer!
Thanks, Maddie Poppe, for making American Idol great again!
I'm soooo happy for her!!! Such style and what a voice!
YESSS the new America idol 😍😍
America finally got it right. Authenticity finally wins. How refreshing.
a young version of stevie nicks, who by the way is my favorite female artist of all time.
AND SHE's THE WINNER!!💯❤️
Winner!! Winner!!
Thx for wrote this song. You are the winner..
Perfect as always
Singer-Songwriter should win! Plus not bad to have that Britney Spears look!
Im in tears right now! Maddie has to win! Love Maddie!
