Police, The - Murder By Numbers Lyrics

Once that you've decided on a killing,
First you make a stone of your heart.
And if you find that your hands are still willing,
Then you can turn a murder into art.

There really isn't any need for bloodshed,
You just do it with a little more finesse.
If you can slip a tablet into someone's coffee,
Then it avoids an awful lot of mess.

It's murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your ABC.
Murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your ABC.

Now if you have a taste for this experience
And you're flushed with your very first success,
Then you must try a twosome or a threesome
And you'll find your conscience bothers you much less

Because murder is like anything you take to
It's a habit-forming need for more and more.
You can bump off every member of your family
And anybody else you find a bore

Because it's murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your ABC
Murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your ABC.

Now you can join the ranks of the illustrious
In history's great dark hall of fame.
All our greatest killers were industrious
At least the ones that we all know by name.

But you can reach the top of your profession
If you become the leader of the land,
For murder is the sport of the elected,
And you don't need to lift a finger of your hand

Because it's murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your ABC.
Murder by numbers, 1, 2, 3,
It's as easy to learn as your A, B, C, D, E,..........

  76. M.... T....

    They made some good sounds

  77. H.... C....

Stewart Copeland, in my humble opinion, is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time!

    H.... C....

@Ze Rubenator Phil Collins is certainly among the great ones. For myself, I'm torn between Larry Mullen and Roger Taylor when it comes to drummers, and neither seems to get the recognition they deserve.

    H.... C....

He's definitely one of the best known drummers, as well as influential. The thing is, he's not a "Rock" drummer. That makes it more incredible, as the Police were putting out #1 hits, using Reggae beats.

    H.... C....

    Easily.

    H.... C....

I agree, except for the "Rock" part. He was a Reggae drummer, but did play some punk, as well as Rock.
There's a Walking on the Moon drum cover, by Bubinga Basher. He just started doing drum covers, but Walking on the moon is as close as I've seen to the studio version. I just checked that out, being a drummer myself

    H.... C....

Its hard to beat Topper Headon of the Clash
The guy played Rock, Calypso, Reggae, Pop, Punk, Latino, Jazz, etx, etc
If you don't know him, check my playlist

  78. M.... ....

I hope this song eventually pops up in Mindhunter as it gears further into the 80s.

That intro to the 2nd season was goddamn chilling.

  79. P.... J....

The first time I ever heard this song was in the movie Copy Cat. An incredible movie!!!

  80. B.... R....

1983 non-album b-side to 'Every Breath You Take' and a bonus track on the 'Synchronicity' cassette and maybe CD(?)

    B.... R....

Yes it's on the CD. One of my favorite tracks on the album :)

  81. M.... ....

funny thing is that in 1983 all these PMRC , devil worshippers, suicides to music by ozzy osbourne but this song was NEVER blamed!!!

  83. M.... b....

The police my favorite band of the univers

  84. V.... S....

They should have used this song on Dexter.

    V.... S....

@Tucker Rotz Well then do you think they are being too literal using that on Prodigal Son?

    V.... S....

@Valerie S Yes, since basically every tv show is catered to the lowest common denominator of intelligence. No thinking involved.

    V.... S....

@Tucker Rotz I agree with what you said but you said it in the most douchebag way.

    V.... S....

@joker Rorschach Sure thing, "Joker Rorschach", why do people like you latch on to stupid pop culture garbage like that? Stop worshipping brands, anarchy boy.

    V.... S....

    Of course!

  85. D.... L....

It was a bonus track on the cassette- I returned the LP to get the tape, not understanding why I'd pay the same amount of money for less music.

I'm here because i'm a fan since the album came out, real fans are here because they are fans!

  89. M.... F....

Love it when I think I found the 1 beat and I'm wrong. Van Halen's Right Now is off by a sixteenth. They even say so in the lyrics.

    M.... F....

Shows you just how tight these guys were. This is a live take, and they just keep switching from 3/4 to 4/4 and back.

The most challenging part to keep track of is Stewart Copeland switching the spot of the kick.

Your best bet to count is to follow the chord changes and match them to what the drums are doing.

    M.... F....

    Even though everybody say it's 12/8 I'd simply consider them triplets, so count "1 2 3 4" ;)
What I suggest is start counting right from the first cymbal (1), through bass drum (2 & 4).
Then you have pre-verse bar (0:17) where he varies bass placing but it comes back on 2 & 4 during the verse. Pauses on 0:38 and is back 2&4 again.
Chorus simply goes to our usual 1&3 bass drum + 2&4 snare drum and I'd say that's the whole philosophy of the time signature here.
If you still can't spot it - listen to the chorus, "one, two, three" are aligned perfectly to this count.

King of pain is much trickier for me :<

    M.... F....

@Michał Kozal Spirits in the material world is another weird one. It's a reggae beat but doesn't sound like it to me. On Sting's demo it's clearer to me where the beats are.

    M.... F....

@Matt Foley pattern (2&4 on verse, 1&3 on chorus) is the same, but the preroll and synths throw me off…

What a bunch of judge mental little bitches lol !!!!!! WoW it’s always amazing how ppl transcribe lyrics into something they arnt! Try being a musician who’s trying to entertain and bring joy to ppl. Lyrics are nothing more then a vocal instrument after the real musicians who make the music. Fucking ppl look way to fucking deep into shit and blast their opinions on what it means when they have no part of it. Ever think why the lyrics are so open? Of course not because you guys are so smart , gimmie a break you silly fucks. Stop looking into the shit like it means something, because it dosent....... if you really knew what it was about It would dry your wet dreams you ignorant fucks. Yes please look into what I said like you do lyrics to a song ! Don’t be ass hats yet I’m sure to hear your liberal cries ....

  92. E.... S....

    Anybody here because:
    #1) of the ad for new show “Prodigal Son” coming in Sept - heard it & thought “well, that’s a ‘catchy’ tune I could get down to”?;
    #2) you were around when it was released, brings you back to the ‘80’s & think - “What a GREAT SONG & TIME”?;
or #3) all of the above??
(PS- If you think my answer is #3 - you’d be right! It’s sometimes the “obscure little ditties” that I think: “WOW! It’s been a minute since I heard this & makes listening to this almost like it’s brand new & become part of my repertoire”- again! ;) )

    E.... S....

Nop. I'm here because of the new Rick Beato's Video :)

    E.... S....

Here because of Rick Beato and it's a good song

    E.... S....

I was fortunate enough to see the police on the synchronicity tour in Baton Rouge many years ago. I remember thinking at the time that I had never been to a concert with as many beautiful women crammed into one spot. It was only outdone by a ZZ Top show in Biloxi not long after that.

    E.... S....

Here for the add pluse The Police are one of my favorite bands

    E.... S....

I choose 2 and 3.Listen like its new.

  93. S.... J....

Slowly listen to these dark satanic lyrics and wickedness going on in the industry of Hollywood and music industry.

    S.... J....

@Stiles Johnson Yes indeed its crazy!! And these lyrics really struck. I've been awoken for many years... some would call me a conspiracy theorist... I call those people "sheople". Because they're still sleep and not woken to reality. They don't want to be unplugged from the matrix. The matrix is very real. Just listen to the lyrics in their songs, it's in movies... the truth is stranger than fiction.

    S.... J....

@Tiffany truth is right in front of us through Tv 📺 and subliminal messaging as well as music. I barely watch Tv and read books. Read behold a pale horse by William Cooper.

    S.... J....

@Stiles Johnson Yessssssssss! I've read that. And also check out Orson Welles "1984"

    S.... J....

Tiffany Williams Definitely will check it out thanks.

    S.... J....

Tiffany Williams Orson Welles great book by the way finished it a few weeks ago.

  94. R.... F....

You had to get the cassette or CD to hear this one back in the day... Can anyone tell me why it wasn't on the vinyl album? One my Top 5 favorite Police cuts!

    R.... F....

I played the cassette till it died.

    R.... F....

"Lack of space" is the common answer, although it could've been easily added on the caveat that the dynamic range would have to be reduced (ie The record would need to be cut at a lower volume to fit the song on it.)

    R.... F....

It was a choice between this or Mrs Gradenko. Due to size restrictions.

    R.... F....

    @EsromFF Miss Gradenko......

    R.... F....

Yeah I had the cassette... phenomenal track along with Tea In The Sahara

Stiles Johnson its a song by the eagles explaining the process of selling your soul and then regretting it but being told you can never truly get it back. Check it out

Black Heracles Thanks 🙏 going to check it out.
