Police, The - Mother Lyrics
Well the telephone is ringing,
Is that my mother on the phone?
Telephone is ringing,
Is that my mother on the phone?
The telephone is screaming,
The telephone is ringing,
Is that my mother on the phone?
Well every girl that I go out with
Becomes my mother in the end.
Every girl I go out with
Becomes my mother in the end.
Well I hear my mother calling,
But I don't need her as a friend.
Well every girl I go out with
Oh, Oh mother
Oh mother dear please listen
And don't devour me.
Oh mother dear please listen
Don't devour me.
Oh women please have mercy
Let this poor boy be.
Oh mother dear please listen
And don't devour me.
Oh mother......
Well the telephone is ringing
Is that my mother on the phone?
Telephone is ringing
Is that my mother on the phone?
Oh mother

Police, The Mother Comments
If cruella deville had a son this is the song he would listen to just before she came over for tea and crumpets.
Total studio fun!
This is a failed abortion of a song
Weird to think this is on the same album as Every Breath You Take.
If Curella deville was my mother this would be my song I would play every time before she came over for tea and crumpets!
If you haven't seen the Stewart Copeland dvd "Everyone Stares" I suggest you do so. Love this song. Sebastian San Martin. Cheers!
Pure angst. I get it.
As much as I like The Police, man, this song is too disturbing.
wow i didnt know the police made good music
Was I the only one disappointed that Darren Aronofsky's "mother!" didn't play this over the credits? XD
I can hear the Fripp influence, but I also hear a bit of Captain Beefheart in this.
Buster Bluth?
I think Alfred Hitchcock would like this one LOL!
I somehow love this song
what the fuck is this dogshit
I could say. One of The Police best songs !!!
Strange. I was just listening to this song for the first time ever, and my phone started ringing. Guess who called?
Was there ever a song that captured neurotic more thoroughly? Probably. But still.......pretty fucked up.
I rate this a solid 7/4
:D this song's hilarious
Sounds more like a Butthole Surfers track mashed up with carnival music.
Mother - The Police
Daddy - Korn
The disturbing duo.
Terrible, total waste of a space for another track on an otherwise immaculate album.
Awesome song.
No wonder Sting was a control freak. This is shite.
This is probably the worst song written by any band, ever. It destroyed an otherwise glorious album.
I love this track so much
More like Tuxedo Moon or Swans
terrifying tune
Why is this shit even on an album?
This would make a great ringtone...
The great service this song does to Synchronicity is it, if only by comparison, makes all the other tracks sound amazing. You get to the end of this song and Miss Gradenko kicks in and you're just so relieved to be hearing it. And then Synchronicity II comes on and you're like holy shit this is the greatest song I've ever heard.
norman bates?
This song made a great case that ANDY SHOULD NEVER SING AGAIN.
Actually one of my mother's fav album
I forgot how whack this song is.... but i was thinking about it yesterday on mother's day
This sounds like Black Francis from the Pixies
It finally makes sense to me! This was probably Andy's appeasement to Sting to write a song based on the concept of Synchronicity. It is a musical synchronicity... Middle Eastern 7/8 time and guitar solo (with what sounds like a middle-eastern flute of some kind), synchronized with the 12-bar blues and verse structure. And, some Freudian Oedipal lyrics for the icing on the cake! Lol!
andy summers put a lot of hard work in it
Undanceable 7/4. Masterpiece. Only for connoisseurs
This song used to scare the F*** out of me! 😳
AMAZING !!!!!!!!
Buffalo Bill played this one while dressing in female clothes.
WeLl ThE tElEpHoNe Is RiNgInG
Is ThAt My MoThEr On ThE PhOnE
it's not like the guys weren't in on the joke. They knew it was "terrible" but that it was a good laugh. A bad song is only possible if you earnestly were trying to write a good song. This is not a bad song. Andy knew what he was doing.
What do you think Sting was thinking while listening to this?
Andy had just collaborated with Robert Fripp, "I Advanced Masked" in 1982. I think something rubbed off on him lol.
Please...once upon a dream for this please....it is once upon a nightmare 😏
This is the funniest song on the album
this one is for mike pence
Without a doubt, the best song on the album
Guess I'm the only one who just thinks this is hilarious, huh?
Julia S. Heck no! I think it's funny as hell!
mmmmmokkkkaaayyyyyyy
This song has a very horrific vibe to it. A pleading anguish he calls out in his voice.
A bit like Captain Beefheart meets King Crimson
More like Residents meet Zappa.
sooooo crimsonian.....
There may be """""genius"""""" lyrics, but that doesn't hide the fact that this track sounds like shit.
This song is about Buster Bluth.
nice,a good game of thrones song
cobain is a thief this is the real niggas
Listening to this song is, aptly enough, like listening to someone talk to you about their Oedipal Complex. It's terrifying, off putting, interesting in the worst way possible, and best avoided if at all possible.
Cicero is that you
I understood that reference
Tf I really like the police but this track (my opinion) is bad, I hope someday I will like it
For some odd reason i think this is really syd barrett
my mother has called me again today and i have to see her again the evening....AAAAAHHHHHHHH
this is a masterpiece in portraying OEdipus madness. Scary as shit.
How do you go along with leaving Tea in the Sahara off the original release of Synchronicity, but keeping this one on? Sting must not have been that huge of a tyrant after all.
Jon Cole I thought Tea was ALWAYS on the original release...……………….you might be thinking of Murder by Numbers, which wasn't on the vinyl version but was included on the cassette (and later, CD) version.
peaking on a bad acid trip
I was 4 when i first heard this......I had nightmares
Be more free of mind
his voice sounds like a rick thats having a mental breakdown while singing
Is this ziggy stardust?
Did Andy summers get drunk with tom waits???
The best musical joke ever! And funny ringtone as an option.
This is one of the most underrated & skipped over songs!!! I still love it, so insane & hilarious!!! 😂😂😂
You know that guy from the Pink Floyd song? He finally ran away from home. His mother was concerned, so she called The Police. This is the state in which they found him...
Apparently, the Genesis song "Mama" must have been inspired in some part by this, particularly when Phil laughs out menacingly. Not to mention that Hugh Padgham was the producer of both songs.
my favorite ring tone on my phone...🤣
This track is incredible. The bowed double bass, the midi guitar, and of course all the percussion driving the beat..Andy Summers is definitely the most advanced of the 3.
This is shit
I used to hate this song, and now I love it and relate. My mom's abusive and toxic and it took me over a decade in my adulthood to recognize that and put my relationship with her in a place that is safe for me, and even then there are vulnerabilities to her that can't ever be closed off.
THE TELEPHONE IS RINGING...IS THAT MY MOTHER ON THE PHONE!!!
10/10 relatable, Sting
It's not a Sting song, it's by Andy Summers. His voice doesn't sound like Sting.
The Horrors could have written this song, 20 years later.
Wait, do people not like this song!? This is my favourite Police song.
motherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... ha haaaaaaa that guy is funnier than billy connoley
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwLDmeEspSA 1979 Crass
a geniunely distressing piece of music
I've never agreed more
Who sing?
Estelle Gilbert Andy Summers
Somehow it reminds me Bleach from Nirvana... But Bleach is good one. This is... Like song to a creepy animation
Sounds like Nick Cave, Jangling Jack
i will never sleep again
Everytime my mother comes over to the house, I play this song.
Hahahahaha
c mamut!! ¨<
That's kind of you I don't invite my mother over to the house
probably doesn't stay that long
I only turn it up when I know she's on the phone.🧟
This Album, this Album..
JUST "WOW!"
There should be a lot more damn likes on this song!!!
This is the only song I can't stand from the album.
Norman Bates.
