Police, The - King Of Pain Lyrics

There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday
There's a black hat caught in a high tree top
There's a flag pole rag and the wind won't stop

I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain.
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign,
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain...

There's a little black spot on the sun today
That's my soul up there.
It's the same old thing as yesterday
That's my soul up there.
There's a black hat caught in a high tree top
That's my soul up there.
There's a flag pole rag and the wind won't stop
That's my soul up there.

I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain.
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign,
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain...

There's a fossil that's trapped in a high cliff wall
That's my soul up there.
There's a dead salmon frozen in a waterfall
That's my soul up there.
There's a blue whale beached by a springtime's ebb
That's my soul up there.
There's a butterfly trapped in a spider's web
That's my soul up there.

I've stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain.
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign,
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain...

There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt
There's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed
There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread

King of pain...

There's a red fox torn by a huntsman's pack
That's my soul up there.
There's a black-winged gull with a broken back
That's my soul up there.

There's a little black spot on the sun today.
It's the same old thing as yesterday,

I've stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain.
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign,
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain.

King of pain [3x]

I'll always be king of pain... [4x and fading]

  1. I.... V....

my parents have this album. this is why im here :p

  2. B.... F....

One of the theme songs of my life, man.

  3. K.... C....

the police were a phenomenon of their time. two musical prodigies and one pretty boy all with blonde hair and a funky reggae-pop sound that took the world by storm. i was 11 when the ghost in the machine album came out and it rocked my world. and when this album came out mtv fans fawned swooned and adulated over these guys. i'd be surprised if anyone under 30 has even heard of them these days. but if you look back and give all of their songs a really good listen, you'll discover that sting's songs were mostly about heartache and pain from relationships. and the song from this album "every breath you take", which was a super smash hit, sounds like a creepy stalker's anthem when you listen to the lyrics now. anyways, even though i never got to see them perform live (i couldn't afford the reunion show tickets in 2007) i always loved this band and i always will.

  4. H.... H....

  8. B.... A....

If you’re going to advertise the lyrics on a literate, artful song like this can you please at least take the trouble to get them RIGHT? Jesus, they’re a MESS.

    f.... c....

58 yo here, I remember listening to this as a kid and loving it but not understanding it. Not until years later in my 20s-30s did I realize their brilliant tallents

    f.... c....

Yes! was 16 when this masterpiece dropped. Remembered the long haired woman too who introduced it to me.

    f.... c....

I knew the right people years ago who got me back stage at a Police concert in Syracuse, NY. The year before they played at a local bar here. Saw both shows.

    f.... c....

    I'm 52 and I remember it!

    f.... c....

I'm 51, and remember this like yesterday!

  33. K.... F....

Its going to happen Monday 11/11/19 when planet Mercury moves across the sun passing directly between Earth and the Sun. It begins at 6:35 am CST.

  36. M.... F....

Whenever you saw Sting in the last 25 years or so, so annoyingly full of himself that he might burst anytime, killing off John Dowland etc., you were bound to forget, what a great musician he actually is. And what a great band this was, with a unique style and impeccable songwriting. Something must have gone horribly wrong on the way. Too sad.

  37. M.... J....

    Sehr Guten Musik

  38. t.... ....

Anybody trippin' on how the picture drops S L O W L Y as the song goes along? Woah!

  42. S.... F....

anybody else think sting looks like Bea Arthur in this pic? aka Dorothy from the Golden Girls.

    S.... F....

I think you look like my ass!

  43. m.... m....

Am I the king of pain?

    m.... m....

I lost my cherry to this song....lol...my boyfriend was definitely...The King of Pain!!...you made me think of that cause you said....am I the king of pain?....that's what my boyfriend use to ask me....lol...many years ago...lol.

  44. J.... H....

I will never stop loving this song, the production value of this entire album is insanely good for 1983, Hugh Padgham took them to a new level in terms of sound with Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity, a masterpiece

  45. s.... g....

I guess I've always hoped that you'd end this reign

    s.... g....

But its my destiny to be the king of pain

  46. S.... F....

    That snare sound! 😍

  47. S.... F....

I recall being in Wales several years ago-Holyhead, it's a town on the coast which has a ferry port to Ireland. Anyway me and a mate were returning to Ireland for Christmas but missed the boat due to traffic congestion so we had to wait for a late night boat so we went into a pub and chilled on that Friday night. In the pub, I heard this song but didn't know who it was and instantly thought it was brilliant. I couldn't for the life of me find it and over the years I looked for it but with no luck as I didn't know the words- anyway today while having this on Youtube autoplay it magically came on and I instantly recognised it. Good things do come to those who wait. Ironic the song's title as it is more king of joy to me. Happy Halloween to you all xx

I will be doing well, feeling productive and decent feelings about life, and then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, the existential dread, a darkness will come over me. Happened to me the other day - I just get in this dark funk. This song and Soundgarden's "Fell On Black Days" really put into lyrics how this feels. Happens several times a year.

For those very intuitive will find this is really a christian song.
The verse: I am that I am.
Some say it should be: I am that, I am.
    The song is about empathy.

Put yourself in their shoes. Thus do not judge.

  96. M.... R....

There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread

  97. J.... H....

Always loved this song. If it is meant to be always open to interpretation, mine has changed several times over the years. I appreciate the upload.✌
