Pogues, The - When The Ship Comes In Lyrics

Oh the time will come up
When the winds will stop
And the breeze will cease to be breathin'
Like the stillness in the wind
'Fore the hurricane begins
The hour when the ship comes in

Oh the seas will split
And the ship will hit
And the sands on the shoreline will be shaking
Then the tide will sound
And the wind will pound
And the morning will be breaking

Oh the fishes will laugh
As they swim out of the path
And the seagulls they'll be smiling
And the rocks on the sand
Will proudly stand
The hour that the ship comes in

And the words that are used
For to get the ship confused
Will not be understood as they're spoken
For the chains of the sea
Will have busted in the night
And will be buried at the bottom of the ocean

A song will lift
As the mainsail shifts
And the boat that drifts on to the shore line
And the sun will respect
Every face on the deck
The hour that the ship comes in

Then the sands will roll
Out a carpet of gold
For your weary toes to be a touchin'
And the ship's wise men
Will remind you once again
That the whole wide world is watchin'

Oh the foes will rise
With the sleep still in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're still dreamin'
But they'll pinch themselves and squeel
And know that it's for real
The hour that the ship comes in

Then they'll raise their hands
Sayin' we'll meet all your demands
But we'll shout from the bow your days are numbered
And like Pharaoh's tribe
They'll be drownded in the tide
And like Goliath they'll be conquered

WHAT A WONDERFUL VERSION - just heard the original - and LOVE this - hip hip horray POGUES !

  2. b.... ....

    https://youtu.be/afON-mTaerQ

  3. L.... K....

Woody Guthrie live or the Lumineers, much better version

  4. W.... ....

I had to rename the Pogues albums without Shane on my iPod so they wouldn't show up when shuffling Pogues songs. Not that they are terrible but they just don't match up with the original Pogues albums at all - even the instrumentation doesn't line up.

I kind of feel bad for Spider Stacy because he had some fine moments (Wake of the Medusa, Tuesday Morning) and could show up to work and put in a decent performance but nearly everybody would rather stay home unless Shane was singing.

  5. s.... ....

Classic Pogues performance - let's get this thing over with so we can get back to the pub.

  6. D.... B....

    Best cover

  7. b.... ....

Punk. Does that rhyme with drunk and skunk? Just checking.

  8. n.... N....

I love this upbeat version.... kick up your heels and dance with your dearest....
be it with a sir or a lady...

+Maik Herberhold The product of alcohol and too much enthusiasm.

    M.... H....

perfect description,i tip you my hat.

  13. T.... ....

This is one of the best Dylan covers I've ever heard. And I'm one of the biggest Dylan fans.

    T.... ....

    @Παναγιώτης Μήτσου
    Moo

    T.... ....

    Yeah, what &*%$#(*&^!  M^&^%$ said.

    T.... ....

It's not a Dylan song. Woody Guthrie wrote this song.

  14. T.... J....

Seems like most lasting good songs were written by Bob Dylan. Like this one. This is my favorite version I think.

  15. S.... ....

    Super-sexy-song!!

  16. P.... A....

check out my cover of this song please. thanks!

  17. d.... ....

    105172!

  18. t.... ....

The Pogues are not the Pogues without Shane. Shane makes it. It's like the Beatles without John. They may be good but they are missing that spark that magic that...everything.

  19. J.... M....

Came here expecting Shane doing Dylan... no wonder I couldn't remember them covering this song. So pissed off!!!

  20. m.... ....

idc what anyone says i love shane & spider, i dont like them after shane left though, except for that song amadie

  21. m.... ....

spider stacy still sang at times even when shane was in the band, you ever heard meledy or young ned of the hill?

  22. P.... B....

@Svenkrone I was gonna say, this isnt shane, but the pogues continued for awhile without him right?

  23. S.... ....

The picture is actually a bit misleading, because this song was recorded without Shane- the singer of this is Spider Stacey. (or however he spells it.)

  24. M.... ....

    @eumesmoaki drunk and stoned!!!!!!!!!!

  25. p.... ....

    @MusicWriter1965 Your eloquence amazes me.

  26. p.... ....

@DOYOULOVETROUBLE I agree. Pogues are great and I love them, but this cover is just bad.

  27. B.... B....

"Einstein was right; honeybee collapse threatens global food security" anagrams to "I often call Brig 2 ease secret GP hush lab ho/toy intention 4 World's Sea Eye".

  28. I.... ....

@SuperDsweeney true. though i would love hear Shane do it instead but anyone that knows Dylan knows he loves irish musik

  29. D.... ....

they ruin a really good song.

  30. a.... ....

how did i not know that this existed? seriously.... how

  31. B.... H....

@montyill They used it as the title of a 1986 EP, "Poguetry in Motion." 4 classic songs.

  32. m.... ....

    Poguetry? can i use that?

  33. I.... F....

@eumesmoaki After Bob Dylan and Bob Marley buys everyone the hash and Elvis and John Lennon have the acid trip.

  34. r.... ....

i didnt know it was a cover. I love this song!

  35. S.... ....

    Love this song!! :D

  36. I.... ....

Shane has nothing to do with this version but i don't think it's that bad but anyon ebeing so stupid thinking Shane is singing really knows nothing

  37. L.... ....

    shite! absolute rubbush

  38. w.... ....

I ultimately love the Pogues. And I love "When the ship...". But they shouldn't have performed this one. However there also ugly Dylan versions of this.

  39. p.... ....

i think dylan might have tossed shanes salad for free many times just cos he knew he ate shit compared to him even while smashed off the gin n tonic

  40. r.... ....

    @letsif Dylan created pink!

  41. N.... ....

I think both are great their ways. Bob Dylan really gave it a revolutionary feeling (though I know he'd hated that term), but this great too!

  42. l.... ....

    Dylan is a punk!

  43. e.... ....

Covered by The Hollies and Peter Paul and Mary as well. All well worth a listen. It strikes me as a song that let's each artist play to their respective strengths.

  44. I.... F....

I love the Pogues but Bob Dylan does it much better (no suprise there 'eh?)

  45. N.... A....

they could fart, and i'd roll down a window

  46. c.... ....

    Bobby Zimmerman/Bob Dylan

  47. p.... ....

    It's a cover! Bam!
