Pogues, The - Turkish Song Of The Damned Lyrics
I come old friend from hell tonight
Across the rotting sea
Nor the nails of the Cross
Nor the blood of Christ
Can bring you help this eve
Claim a debt from thee
They stand outside your door
Four score and three
Did you keep a watch for a dead man's wind
Did you see the woman with the comb in her hand
Wailing away on the wall on the strand
As you danced to the Turkish song of the damned
You remember when the ship went down
The captain's corpse jumped up
And threw his arms around my neck
For all these years I've had him on my back
This debt cannot be paid with all your jack
And as I sit and talk to you I see your face go white
This shadow hanging over me
Is no trick of the light
The spectre on my back will soon be free
The dead have come to claim
A debt from thee

Pogues, The Turkish Song Of The Damned Comments
It's a rare song that you can listen to a thousand times and still not be tired of it...
Banshees in Ireland comb their hair when they appear and whomever they throw the comb at will die.
This song never gets old ...

Great Folk Rock song 👍
Deep and dark lyrics from The Master songwriter.
This song is killer! I haven't heard this song in many years and returning for St. Patrick's Day was a treat. Brilliant. They really were brilliant.
The greatest band ever. Greatest songwriter. Greatest musicians. Greatest songs. The Pogues. This ain't no mawkish song of the bland.
amusing orientalism
I am Turkish and I don't find this song offensive. :p Actually, I first listened "The Pogues" with "The Old Main Drag", roughly 25 years ago. But that was another story that we may talk, later. :) About this one? Weeell... This is one of the best Turkish songs even without any Turkish musician or a single Turkish lyric in it. But the melody has the deep feeling of a "Döner Kebap" with a pint of "Guiness"... As a Turkish Pirate from a Mediterranean, giving my best "Damnation" to this song and Ye Olde Irish Sailors... \m/
Love it!
So the story behind the song’s name...
The Pogues were playing a concert in Germany, and as was typical for them they had no set playlist, they just played what sounded good to them and took shouted requests from the audience, their own stuff and covers.
One excited German fan really wanted them to play ‘The Turkey Song’, by the group The Damned. His English wasn’t great and he was in a hurry and a little drunk. “Play Turkish song of The Damned!” he yelled.
“What did he say!?!” Shane shrieked. “That’s fucking brilliant!” He wrote it down on a beer coaster and wrote the song around it.
@Mike L buena historia
It is not supposed to be offensive. It is about pagan ghost pirates attacking a ship.
The world would be a better place if people saved being "offended" for things that mattered..... The scourge of war, poverty, exploitation of man by other men.....
Fuck your feelings... Fuck your religion... Fuck your uptight ass..... Listen to the music and connect with other human beings, FFS....
The damned must have been the Ethnic Albanians the Turks genocided .
Someone said "Another bag of bricks" by Flogging Molly sounded similar to this... *they were right*
Up Ireland ...

Poguetry in Turkey
The meter of this track is phenomenal in terms of the sound. Not to mention, the vocals. Rebetiko? I think so. X
The entire song is great but the part starting at 2:40 is from another universe.
The lyrics in this song are heavier and more evil than anything Slayer & Co have ever come up with.
Absolutely. Brilliant song. It's like getting to hear a freaky-as-hell folk tale being born. Love The Pogues.
what a great comment. irishman here who grew up listening to metal and the pogues. always got that same feeling from both. powerful feeling
Des paroles hard qui tendent à faire sortir l'individu d'une léthargie assomante...

MMMM THIs is really weird but really cool i l o v e it
Absolutely love this band. Great songs, great musicians ... Great lead singer, haha! Started listening to the Pogues again recently cos you hear them a lot on the HBO series, The Wire. Body of An American gets a couple of airings (it's the song played whenever the Baltimore cops hold a wake for a departed comrade). Jimmy McNulty's character is a big fan, and you hear Turkish Song of the Damned once on his car radio.
Andrew Francis
For sure. Always loved The Pogues and loved The Wire that much more because of their inclusion! And yeah, I think old McNulty listens to the Pogues a few times. Is the Turkish Song of the Damned playing in that scene where he's like blind drunk and runs his car into that bridge support bunch of times?
Such a great show.
That plot twist in 2.40 LOVE IT!!
Love the beginning of the song - it grabs you by the throat and won't let you go :)
Woah! I just discovered ''Dirty Old Town'' by Pongues. That was their second song that grabbed my attention as a Turk!
Pongues is a great band! :)
Listen to "the band played waltzing matilda" , a cover by the pogues about gallipoli - pretty fucken good.
Very best song ever written...today. a lot of us dancing this
@Ernest Schroeder I would go so far as to say Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen have a few songs each that can rival this one, but I agree, this is one of the best songs ever written and produced.
Shane is huge Tom Waits fan, Tom is huge Pogues fan (read his poem "Pogues" in inner sleave of "Hell's Dithc" edition from 2004.) and I am huge fan of both (but I admite I am "The Clash fan at first) and I would like to hear Tom's versions
of some Pogues songs; "Rainy night in Soho" would be perfect for Tom.
A pure genius when it comes to writing songs along with chevron. A poet in his own right. Brilliant band of musicians
You related?
poetry is right..... Puts you right in the song..... Classic all the way- loove it!

opps iv replyed to u twice an u may already know that Haplogroup R1b is our celtic blood witch isn't the same as are celtic culture. if u didn't il explain more but I think u get it lol science ftw
Haplogroup R1b that is our celtic genetics not that "blood" matter outside of science .but u all hear are entering science an I cant let any of u do that wrongly as its not how we as the human race progresses. sorry if im being a nerd
u want the blood of my people is Haplogroup R1b google it
are genetics are Haplogroup R1b google it while I thank the scythians for our culture our genetics are not from there. im being picky becoz if ur gona use science use all of it. our genetics are complex but worth getting right for the sake of science saying are blood is Turkish is like saying Chinese blood is indian cultures are not genetic not offence
sorry to be picky but its not blodd just culture celtic culture is not genetics we are oisin Haplogroup R1b. google it don't confuse genetics for culture its unhistoric
At first, "Celt" was a term used by Greeks & Romans to describe Europeans who weren't Greek or Roman. And following the Germanic migrations from Scandinavia, Europeans who weren't Germanic either (although, they often confused the two groups). Caesar basically said a Celt is a civilized barbarian, whereas a German is a wild barbarian. That's how they distinguished the two. It had little to do with language or culture. The guy wearing pants was a Celt. And the guy wearing furs was a German.
we love guinness here in Turkey ! love the irish music too , awesome song , cheers !
luv dis
Celtic culture was a cultural and linguistic category not necessarily a biological one. Looking for "Celtic DNA" would be a vain undertaking fraught with dilemmas. The racist thinking of the 19th century persists as an artifact of intellectual inertia into the 21st century. Regretably.
Celtic people can be found everywhere.

Weird...not soilwork.
There are two feckin' eejits on You Tube.
And at least 213 (as of 05/05/2012) with taste.
Fav Pogues tune. It's all great, but THIS song and THIS album may be all you need to be truly addicted to absolute mayhem!
Once long long ago we were all, all together, not like now with divisions, race, culture. Just when we are figuring it all out, the bastards "in charge" want to take it all for themselves. Well, are we gonna let them? Or are we gonna FIGHT!
This is my favourite song of all times. Just gets me that best feeling ever.
@Turoyan
If you look at old Celtic patterns in clothing and art, you can see some similarities. I'd love to go to Turkey.
This song is amazing. Its like some Irishmen and some Turkish dudes got together and had a drunken party! Efes and Guiness for all!
@liamthebluesguitaris Cool story bro, you should write a book.
@paganpoet3 you're*
get a room gassmask and gasper. bloody ridiculous.
@3choBlaster ....i like the way you express your self with words.....
IT LOOKS LIKE YOUR A TURK OR SOMETHING.....hehehehhe....
I love this song but i cant understand a single word
and as i sit and talk to you i see your face go white, this shadow hanging over me is no trick of the light.
This might be their best song in my opinion. its the perfect mix of Irish and Eastern. The pinnacle of their career.
@paganpoet3 Yeah, right. Change the topic, you stupid seacrawler.
@GasMaskSS .....Ataturk is the one WHO FUCKED ALLAH......
so he saved me from that one......
and actually.....who gives a damm about Turkey.....you people are in midleage......
@paganpoet3 Nice try, Alexander. Go out alone in the streets and yell out "Fuck Atatürk, fuck Allah."
Record it to a video, and I'll give you 150000 dollars.
@GasMaskSS ....actualy i did......last year i was in instabul for a football play.....
P.A.O.K fc Vs fenerbactshe.......
I SAID THAT OVER AND OVER AGAIN.......nothing happend....

THEY ALL AGREE.....KEMAL WAS A MASS MURDERER AND A DRUNK......
my house is just 50 meters away from his birth home.....
EVERY MORNING I SAY "FUCK YOU KEMAL".....
nothing happend.....
i guess you smoke and you are dreaming dude....
@paganpoet3 You don't have the balls to say that in Turkey. Turks would go viking on your ass.
@GasMaskSS ...."FUCK ATATURK".......im waiting for the "consequences."......
THE ONLY CONSEQUENCES IS THAT MILLIONS OTHER PEOPLE WILL REPEAT WHITH A SMILE IN THEIR FACES......"FUCK HIM"......
@gasper47 You'll get a boot shoved up your ass if you try to mess with a Turk. Just come down here, give it a try. Say "Fuck Atatürk" and deal with the consequences.
@gasper47 Hahahahahah. The glorious Turks scored over a million Gaymenians, and you think you can get vengeance over that?
Good luck, bro.
Turk & proud.
@gasper47 Good job confusing this song with Turks.
@sxserenade I went to see them in Christmas 2009 and they didn't play it. I was a little gutted, but it was still a fucking great night and I was too pissed to care.
this is third time I've fav'd it but it never works hopefully this time it works >:P curse the favorite button of the damned
This is an amazing song.
