Pogues, The - The Auld Triangle Lyrics

A hungry feeling, came o'er me stealing
And the mice they were squealing in my prison cell
And that auld triangle, went jingle jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal.

Oh to start the morning, the warden bawling
Get up out of bed you, and clean out your cell
And that auld triangle, went jingle jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal.

Oh the screw was peeping and the lag was sleeping
As he lay weeping for his girl Sal
And that auld triangle, went jingle jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal.

On a fine spring evening, the lag lay dreaming
And the seagulls were wheeling high above the wall
And that auld triangle, went jingle jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal.

Oh the wind was sighing, and the day was dying
As the lag lay crying in his prision cell
And that auld triangle, went jingle bloody jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal.

In the female prison there are seventy women
And I wish it was with them that I did dwell
And that auld triangle, went jingle jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal.

My relatives came to America during the Potato Famine in Ireland. Of course, I have relatives from other places, like Spain, England, Etc, although I am around 1/2 Irish. So even though that part of my family came here around circa 1860, I still find myself grateful to be an American. This was the land of opportunity once upon a time, and still is (if you play your cards right) and to elaborate further, how cool is it that this song was written around 1960(?) but sounds so traditional!

"Land of Opportunity" where most people have to bankrupt themselves just to access healthcare ? no thanks

How are the Natives doing with that land of opportunity angle? and nearly 100 years after the Empire its still England who are the occupiers

@stelladurban what we have today was inevitable. It is a complete impossibility that the Americas would stay under the rule or in habitation of the natives. We can be grateful that the nation to come out of this is a democratic republic. When you think about all of the ways it could have turned out this is a blessing beyond measure. Could things have been done better? Absolutely! By no means was the slaughter of thousands by war, disease and famine justified. It is a stain on mankind's existence that should never be forgotten. But I will say that in a world filled with evil what we have today is the best possible outcome. Had tyranny taken this continent the world would be a much different place
