Pogues, The - South Australia Lyrics

In South Australia I was born, heave away, haul away
In South Australia, 'round Cape Horn, we're bound for South Australia

Haul away your rolling king, heave away, haul away
Haul away, you'll hear me sing, we're bound for South Australia

As I walked out one morning fair, heave away, haul away
'Twas there I met Miss Nancy Blair, we're bound for South Australia

There's just one thing that's on my mind, heave away, haul away
That's leaving Nancy Blair behind, we're bound for South Australia

And as we wallop round Cape Horn, heave away, haul away
You'll wish to God you've never been born, we're bound for South Australia

In South Australia I was born, heave away, haul away
In South Australia, 'round Cape Horn, we're bound for South Australia

The legislature of South Australia should definitely make it their anthem. I hope they have a legislature in South Australia.

  29. V.... B....

South Australia is a sea shanty, also known under such titles as "Rolling King" and "Bound for South Australia". As an original worksong it was sung in a variety of trades, including being used by the wool and later the wheat traders who worked the clipper ships between Australian ports and London. In adapted form, it is now a very popular song among folk music performers that is recorded by many artists and is present in many of today's song books. (Wikipedia)
The Pogues do a great job! I love listening to this version. I learnt the song (same tune as The Pogues) as a child in the early 1960s, as I was born in South Australia.

  43. M.... M....

South Australia was the only state that convicts weren't sent - that's the significance of the song, if you were heading to SA you were going by choice.

    M.... M....

They didn't send convicts to Victoria either. All my ancestors are from S.A. and Vic, so I know I'm free of criminal blood. ;)

  44. D.... S....

They do sound like a bunch of ruffians haha

  45. D.... S....

    which pogue sings this??

    M.... S....

    James fearnly

    M.... S....

Terry Woods, second in from the right with the banjo

    M.... S....

ima go with the Terry Woods answer, since James Fearnly isnt listed as a Vocalist on linear notes.... but i can only believe what im told lol.

    M.... S....

The guy with the banjo is Jem Finer, Terry Woods is the guy behind him with the Mandolin, and terry was the vocalist on this song...just saying what a brilliant version this is.

  79. G.... B....

Does anyone know what the tune is that starts at 1.59? I've heard it used in another song and have learned it but have no idea what it's called.

    G.... B....

+Glen Barton It's a Kerry Polka. I can't be more specific than that, though.

edit: apparently it's their own take on "Salmon Tails Up the Water": https://thesession.org/tunes/2903

    G.... B....

Seems really close to red haired Mary

    G.... B....

+Glen Barton I seem to think it's Flowers of Edinburgh. Not positive about that, but I remember playing it as part of a medley in a ceilidh band once.

    G.... B....

hrotha The Bushwackers used "Sailors Hornpipe" a lot as the instrumental break.

    G.... B....

Siege of Ennis is the tune.

  80. D.... R....

At 3.22 you can hear someone say "Shit!" Gotta love The Pogues :D

    D.... R....

+Daniel Redmond I remember putting this track on a tape for my kids when they were little. I thought "Oh they'll never notice that little expletive at the end." first time my daughter played it, it ended and she announces, "HE SAID 'SHIT'!"

    D.... R....

    Heave away , haul away!!!!

    D.... R....

I was on the US Navy for ten years , the last four on a Cruiser in the Pacific Fleet . We were sailing to Esperance South Australia for a port visit . I wanted our ship to play this song when we broke away from the replenishment ship that supplied us in the Indian Ocean before we got there . But our Captain was a Mennonite , Shaker, Quaker , type of religionist , and I was afraid he'd hear the "Shit" at the end of the song . So we played "Waltzing Matilda " instead . Another time we were heading to Singapore and i wanted to play "Singapore" by Tom Waits , but as our Captain was short of stature , I though he'd take offense at the line "The Captain is a one eye'd dwarf , he's throwing dice along the wharf . "

  81. S.... ....

    Fan-bloody-tastic.

  82. C.... ....

This is a good song to exercise to, although sometimes it gets me a little too pumped up and I end up feeling near death's door when I'm finished. The instrumental part at the end also makes me wish I'd learned Irish dancing in childhood.

    C.... ....

@CaroLouWho Me and one of me mates used to irish dance to this when we were pissed good days!!

    C.... ....
