Pogues, The - Lullaby Of London Lyrics

As I walked down by the riverside
One evening in the spring
Heard a long gone song
From days gone by
Blown in on the great North wind
Though there is no lonesome corncrake's cry
Or sorrow and delight
You can hear the cars
And the shouts from bars
And the laughter and the fights

May the ghosts that howled
Round the house at night
Never keep you from your sleep
May they all sleep tight
Down in hell tonight
Or where ever they may be

As I walked on with a heavy heart
Then a stone danced on the tide
And the song went on
Though the lights were gone
And the North wind gently sighed
And an evening breeze coming from the East
That kissed the riverside
So I pray now child that you sleep tonight
When you hear this lullaby

May the wind that blows from haunted graves
Never bring you misery
May the angels bright
Watch you tonight
And keep you while you sleep

So sad why are you leaving us in europe ? alone is not strong you should know it ?

    M.... I....

The UK was taken into the EU without its citizens being asked if that was what they wanted. When they were finally asked the majority who voted said no. They were told that their choice would be respected. They are still waiting.

It's such a beautiful song. It works for so many aspects of life. I personally link it to departure and having to say goodbye to a loved one. Not necessary through death, but more so if somebody you love is moving away from home to another city or country.

i never heard oh The Pogues until i was 20 on my holiday trip to Ireland Dublin...and best trip ever!!!...and it happened that i walked in their Walk of Fame( Temple Bar)..and this song was playing...fall in love straight away :)

  37. T.... ....

This song is similar in theme to Thousands are Sailing from the same album. Thousands was the US and this is London. MacGowan wrote this one, Philip Chevron wrote Thousands.
They are both lonesome songs about Irish emigrants who have died. Thousands had other themes but referenced the coffin ships during the the Irish Famine where this doesn't directly say the cause of the London deaths but one may assume it is drink related. To die from drink may be seen as something immoral ('down in hell tonight'). MacGowan has written this lullaby to helped a loved one sleep who would have witnessed these deaths and protect the person from the ghosts.
But this song is littered with incredible imagery for over half the song. My favourite bit is 'Heard a long gone song from days gone by, Blown in on the great North wind'. MacGowan often spoke of his gift for songwriting as being akin to a tune or idea coming to him on the wind. Pure genius.

    T.... ....

TheEamoB I love your accurate take on this amazing song and wholeheartedly agree with you. Both lyrically and musically it’s the best!

  38. E.... ....

Some lesser people are born to sing, others to drill our souls.

    Beautiful. 💜💜💜😙😙

  40. R.... A....

61 people must get no sleep at all from those bastard ghosts.

  41. D.... S....

I sort of like the instrumental background, and the song itself is pretty good. The singer needs to sober up .

  45. J.... L....

Absolutely brilliant. Shane may need teeth and speech teacher when talking but he has more musical talent in his left pinky finger than anyone in the Top 100 today.
Stay well Shane -- the world needs more of your music and lyrics. Much more. You're not a singer -- you're an artist.

  46. E.... 3....

    One of his best

  47. M.... ....

Downvoted because a minute and a half of dead space at the end totally fucks it up for a playlist. Fuck right the hell off.

  48. J.... J....

Bless you Shane. We have walked a similar path. Many gifts bestowed upon us but tempted by all the poisons. Thought I would be gone by now but at least I have your music to carry me onward.
