Pogues, The - Hell's Ditch Lyrics

Life's a bitch, then you die
Black Hell
Hell's ditch - naked howling freedom
The killer's hands are bound with chains
At six o'clock it starts to rain
He'll never see the dawn again
Our lady of the flowers

Genet's feeling Ramon's dick
The guy in the bunk above gets sick
In the cell next door the lunatic
Starts screaming for his mother

Black dildo, black hell,
As the Spanish cops ridiculed my gel
A mugshot I remember well
Little man how you have suffered

I could hear the screams from up above
If it ain't a fist it isn't love
As for our lady she kneels down
Her neck is bent, the blade comes down
Doing! There goes the breakfast bell
Back from heaven, back to hell
Naked howling freedom - Hell's Ditch

  18. K.... K....

Don't feel sorry for Shane McGowan. He's living as he wants. What freedom. What a legend. Oh for you know nothing's he's irish parents spent a lot of time in Tipperary growing up with grandparents so experienced more irish music/culture than most irish people growing up here. He's out for the craicwhich you will never understand unless you are actually irish not celt(haha we are gaels not Celts ...Celts are meant to be tall but good luck proving that you are celt as very few left here anywhere in British isles)70 AD when they got to ireland so facts and all that

    K.... K....

Gaels are a type of celtic people. It's obvious the Irish are Celts, why would Irish be a Celtic language otherwise?

    K.... K....

    Gaels = Irish, Scottish, Manx

    Boom.

  19. P.... O....

    Probably my favourite Pogues song!

    P.... O....

  21. D.... S....

Other people have Waits and Cave.We got Shane.Life is bitch, than you die.

    D.... S....

    @Diäb Soulé then*

    D.... S....

+Diäb Soulé Cept "The Clash" and "Pogues" I am also huge fan of Tom Waits and Waits always talked about Shane and "Pogues" with full respect, in the inner sleave of this album, re-edition on CD with some bonus tracks from 2004. there's Tom Waits poem simply titled "Pogues" and it's the best dedication to them I ever read or heard, I am not some fan of Nick Cave but let me remind you on Cave's and Shane's duet for cover of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World"; they are all the one gang of fucking geniouses hanging around together with a lot of fans in common so your's comment is little bit silly!!!

    D.... S....

    however never had a pope.

  22. C.... B....

Shane was born into a a tribe of cannibals in the Amazon

  23. T.... A....

best lyrics ever...Shane is a genius

    T.... A....

Agreed. A sad genius (as many are) but one just the same.

    T.... A....

@Druettya genius is a person filled with knowledge and knowledge is a powerful thing many use it to control people few use it to make us enjoy life that's why shane is a man with a soul blackened by the life he has seen and that's what makes him a beauty of a man long live shane McGowan may God be your only judge and may he judge u for the worthy man you are

  24. S.... ....

    black dildo
    black hell
as the spanish cops ridicule my gel
    a mugshot i remember well
little man how you have suffered

  25. A.... R....

On which album is this song?

    A.... R....

    hells ditch

  26. s.... s....

He brought up old Irish songs to keep the culture alive. So why bother that he was born in the UK? I think that it is a great thing to do because when they take your culture away, u become weak as a unity.

  27. T.... A....

    Stunning album...good work by Strummer

  28. R.... d....

aye but being a celt is a cultural thing not a mere nationality I live in England but im still a scot (celt).

the issue with England is the throwing away of our culture thus making a rift between sassonach an celt, all the hate stems from largely ancient cultural rifts.

things are peaceful now no doubt thanks to enjoying the differences rather then fighting over them. 15 years an counting with lets count on many more otherwise bono well be angry with us lol

    R.... d....

Im from the north of Portugal and we have celtic roots. Shane is a genius and his words and music always were a big part of my life.

  29. R.... d....

whos questioning it Iv spent most my life in England, (spites) lol. the only reason they question transplanted celts is coz they got no culture left to tell them apart from any other. I mean have ye heard English folk music lol having said that the people are grand but feck the country to the sea TAL

  30. D.... D....

    absolutely splendid!

  31. D.... D....

    what teeth?!

  32. D.... S....

    best.song.ever.

  33. D.... S....

    word mate.kudos from Croatia

  34. b.... ....

its real stupid that you talk about races. Turkey loves guinness and irish music ! and doesnt care for any race

  35. x.... ....

There's No English Neither Irish Too...We 're just human beings! Forget nationalism and patriotism just concentrate to the music..Listen! It sounds wonderful, can you feel it my little brothers and sisters too? This is Music and Music Unites!

  36. L.... C....

    Favourite Pogues song, fucking beaut

  37. m.... ....

To strummerarseholeclash. If you feel the need to call him british than make no fucking wonder the Irish hate you.

  38. t.... b....

this song is about the superstisions in every country and it turns out that they are much the same

  39. T.... ....

Doesn't seem to be the case here in Canada, though I'm assuming that what you are saying comes from in the UK.

  40. T.... ....

1 his parents were irish. 2 .his second name is MacGowan. 3. look at the head on him, ive never seen a more irish lookin fucker!

  41. N.... N....

Not these days it doesn't. all sorts of interesting creeds and races born in the UK we have to call British through fear of being branded racist......( I think we probably have to be consistent across the board, so definatley british - if you insist on the fact that he's Irish, definatly racist!)

  42. M.... ....

    bloody heel it rocks!!

  43. G.... T....

love this song wish there was more words in though

  44. t.... ....

most undrrated lyricisit out there, hes right up there wll bob and neil

  45. l.... ....

shane.has sido dueño de tu alma.felicidades

  48. H.... F....

@jackstrawfrmwchta t'as un sacré problème toi! à mon avis une séance chez le psy te ferait pas de mal!

  49. F.... G....

@jackstrawfrmwchta There's no such thing as wormholes. So, what you say is crap. I think you best go back to the institution where you escaped from. And leave the world in peace without the shit you're writing here. Off you go!

  50. M.... ....

    UP DA POUGES!!!!!!!!!

  51. B.... C....

@DarkstarXxIII Then how did they listen?

  52. G.... S....

@badjackbrowning5 I love it!!!! Exactly what I think!!!

  55. M.... ....

Shane's Irish... Now Fuck Off And Dance!!! ;-)

  56. C.... ....

@ComfortablyUnnumb Actually it's called bog-speak, and it's the primary language of most Celtic countries.

  57. f.... ....

sounds like mediterranean music, actually a lot of irish are from the mediteranee originally especially the "black irish" people with dark hair and darker skin but still white, my @0.02 enjoy the song :)

  58. d.... ....

    What a voice Shane has...
What a music the Pogues made...
I was 15 when I first heard this voice/this song, I've been always thinking that behind this voice there must be a wonderful man, first time I saw him was 3 years ago (I age 32 by now,imagine...) but still Shane remains in my heart as a beloved friend.
Hate to read comments about teeth or alcoholism.Concentrate on the voice/music,please.
Shane, darling, love you as a brother.
    Greetings from Athens.

  59. L.... N....

@badjackbrowning5 I love your comment! I have heard more debating about where he was born than the true importance of his musical genius....he is a poet and the music rocks!

  64. S.... ....

  65. J.... H....

Just because you were born in a stable, it doesn't make you a horse.

  78. M.... M....

  80. o.... ....

Dont be a hole and claim this music isnt eastern/turkish influenced, anyone experienced in Irish music will tell you its highly influenced by the orient, hence the bouzouki : D

Most of us here are mixed with something, many of us with Irish blood. Very few here are pure anything unless their parents are foreign born emigrants. We Americans aren't just proud to be Americans, but also like to be proud of where our ancestors hail.

I'm Irish, Italian, and Polish/Czech, but I identify most strongly with the Irish side. I guess it's where you feel the most comfortable.
