Poco - Legend Lyrics

Dark as night, cold and lonely,
Rides the horse that's known as only Thunder Road.

Icy fingers hold the reins
While hoofs come poundin' so insanely on and on

Eyes that dance like burnin' embers
All the county still remembers who you are.
Did she love you like they say?
And did she really run away ond leave you here?

Ride the wind

Tonight you'll find her there
No more racin'
With the damp night air

Down the road to Whitman's Crossing,
Underneath the Widow's blossoms soft and green
Covered by the crimson shawl,
Hidden by the leaves that fall down to the ground
Midnight comes and midnight goes,
Inbetween the moonlight shadows veiled in tears.

The pure greatness of Paul Cotton!

    M.... M....

Although Paul did the lead vocal, this song was written by Rusty

  8. l.... ....

Kudos to the unsung hero of this song, Steve Chapman on drums. Paul and Rusty charge straight ahead to set the table for Under the Gun the next year and several upbeat tracks on other albums to follow, but Chapman holds it all smooth as motor oil. Stellar performance, and as we found out, not out of character for this versatile band.

  9. J.... T....

First heard this song on a mixed tape my stepdad gave me in 83..Took me years to find out it was Poco who did it because the title is not mentioned in the song.

My Old Man used to cover this song in his old bar band, Runner. It rocks for that fact alone...

  28. G.... F....

    Unreal song

  29. W.... F....

For all the sultry nights during the summer of 1978 - with me aboard my chopped H-D Pan/Shovel. This tune would wash over me like a powerful wave. This is still bruisin'!

  30. D.... N....

I was lucky enough to see Poco play for FREE in Glastonbury, CT a few years back. It was the last year Paul Cotton was with the band with Rusty Young as well. They played an outdoor show on a beautiful July night. This is like 10 minutes from my house. So glad I saw them. They did this song as their encore I think. It was awesome. I shook their hands after the show. They are legends.

    D.... N....

Yes they are LEGENDS! Ground-breakers, nice people, gifted - and SHOULD be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!

  31. B.... W....

Ironically, this is the first Poco song I ever heard.  Of course, by the time this was released Furay, Grantham and Schmidt were all gone.  The irony is that this was their biggest seller and of course the long running joke was that when one of the original members departed the sales picked up.

  32. C.... W....

This album is one of my all time favorites. My understanding is that Phil Hartman of SNL fame created this album cover as well. Anyone else hear the same?

    C.... W....

Yes, Hartman also did the album cover of America's "History: Greatest Hits".

    C.... W....

Did album covers for other bands, too, including the band America.

    C.... W....

@Steve He did several album covers for Poco including Poco Seven. He also did Aja for The Dan!

  33. t.... ....

The hardest rocking Poco song that I know of! The boys are flirting with heavy metal here

    t.... ....

+thewillismon Yeah-I Think this "hard rock song" was driven by Paul who was into a much tougher image ot Poco.

    t.... ....

    Henri Saxerholt Great

    t.... ....

NOWAY metal ...just a WILD THOROGHBRED MUSTANG leading his flock i the right direction

    t.... ....

Yes. Phil Hartman was a graphic artist as well as one of the funniest people ever!

  34. L.... P....

Happy Birthday Rusty! I'm sad that you are retiring but it is long deserved! A great job done! God Bless you!

    L.... P....

"Semi" retired. He still gets his band around and plays a date or two every month or 2. Just a lot more time off for him and Mary, his wife. WELL-deserved

  35. e.... h....

    i love this great song

  36. t.... w....

Great song with a driving beat and back-pull guitar chords that set up the beat of the entire song. TBS' influence here is obvious, but the entire band earns praise as this is one of the really great early rockers of this changing time in our music.

    t.... w....

    TBS? What's that?

  37. N.... C....

Memories from waaay back when...love it!

  38. 9.... ....

Oh Man!  I Love this song!  Great riff, great driving beat, great harmonies.  What's not to love?  Country rock at its very finest.  I was fortunate enough to see these guys in concert before TBS left the band.  Awesome show!

  39. B.... D....

Awesome song by an excellent band

  40. w.... ....

Little known fact. Phil Hartman of SNL fame was a graphic artist back in the day, and did the cover for this album. Great album....

    w.... ....

    Wow that's interesting to know!!

    w.... ....

I’ve heard that once before and love this cover, been wanting that tattoo on my arm for 25 years.

  41. O.... ....

This is a great album ...

  42. D.... B....

    very best album

  43. Y.... ....

    Legend!

    Y.... ....

YourFavoriteTwinzz You girls are beautiful. Will one go out with me Friday and one Sat?

  44. b.... ....

Timothy B. Schmit helped on this legendary album just before he joined Poco Jr. (aka The Eagles) although he was no longer an official member of the band.
