Poco - Dallas Lyrics

I lived in no holy house but the Grand Hotel
The back streets of this old town I know so well.
And I drunk of no holy wine save muscatel;
Now my friend , I've got to go,
You tell everyone I know

I'm sayin' goodbye, bye, bye, Dallas;
I can't stay.
Should have been at the palace
Yesterday
Bye, bye, Dallas; got to go
And I remember when they told me so.

Right now I'm wonderin' where
the good times have gone;
All the things I never loved when they wwas mine.
Hot city and an empty pocket make a man think on;
I've been living low so long,
Gotta get back where I belong.

I'm sayin' goodbye, bye, bye, Dallas;
I can't stay.
Should have been at the palace
Yesterday
Bye, bye, Dallas; got to go
And I remember when they told me so.

Bye, bye, Dallas;
I can't stay.
Should have been at the palace
Yesterday.
Ain't no bother; it's understood
Livin' under cover don't do no good.
Bye, bye, Dallas.

    I think I can say that I love the Poco version and the Steely Dan version equally. And It's not often you can say that!

    Way Kool
    I had the 8-track.

  4. P.... W....

    Great song!!....as is "Giles of the River!!" Also written by Walter and Dan. ..

  5. B.... H....

    I still love the Steely Dan version, but this has all the extra little things it needed.

    B.... H....

    they make what was once a pretty melancholy song far more dramatic/heroic which I admire

    B.... H....

    There was a band in Orange County, CA called Young, Cole ,Paugh & Amos who literally kicked -ass on this song live!!

    Howdy from Dallas Texas, there are over 200 recordings that mention Dallas dating back to 1918. That is probably more than Paris, San Francisco, or New York Dallas is a hip place. Dallas Blues was the first published Blues sheet music 1912.

    Good song with many good memories!

    I always liked this song but it never jumped out until until I heard the live version on The Last Roundup, where it's arguably the best cut on that album.

    Timothy Schmitt, who sang lead for Poco. provided backing vocals on a few Steely Dan tracks.I have to assume Becker and Fagen  gave him this song because it was written when those 2 started their songwriting careers.

    At the time of "Head Over Heels," Steely Dan and Poco were ABC Records labelmates. The Steely Dan version featured the elegant pedal steel guitar of Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, so it was a no-brainer that it would be a perfect fit for Poco and Rusty Young. Always loved how Timothy B. Schmit's voice just soars on the refrain "I remember how she told me so."

    Just like "Yacht Rock" pointed out, everyone knew each other in the soft rock community
