We must understand the culture of the Jews at that time. What was Peter’s fear which caused him to deny Jesus thrice?

Peter was a person steep in the old covenant. Peter actually spoke about this in his epistle.

2 Peter 2:21-22
It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. So you see he was speaking about going back to the Law.

Jesus was leading the Jews to the age of grace. To deny Jesus would mean a return to the Law.

Peter’s persecution came from his fellow Jews.

You may not understand this. In my country this is liken to a muslim leaving his faith to become a Christian. It means persecution, denial and all that.

Satan there is the old covenant and the priestly system which led to the arrest of Jesus.

So many people turn to Jude 9 and say Satan is a cosmic angel which desired Moses’s body.

What people don’t realize is that Jude is not speaking about the devil.

He was actually referring to Jewish folklore and legends which are familiar to his audience to Jews. It’s like telling a story about Jack and the Beanstalk to my mom’s generation to illustrate a point.

Jude is referring to people are slanderers and take the holy things of God for granted. They have no respect for things which are sanctified. Hence there is that illustration about slandering celestial beings.

In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings.

Who are they?

Jude 1:18-19
They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.

So these are people who were trying to bring people who have entered into the new covenant back to the old. It could refer to people like the following:

Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

Now, with regards the burial of Moses here is a Jewish legend about the burial of his body.

According to ancient Jewish legends – which should be regarded only as legends – the death of Moses was tender and full of God’s compassion.

Now looking at this story, it seems that Moses has difficulty facing his death and the certainty of where he would end up after his death.

Jude’s reference to the devil here if read together with this story probably is referring to Moses’s struggle with his passing.

The devil in Hebrew means slanderer. This would fit well with the story that God had purposed that Moses would have a comfortable death.

Hence Moses’s fear of the angel of death would stand against the character of God who wanted to give him a comfortable death. Hence, the term “Devil.”

It’s important for us to note stories like the above are not biblical accounts but folklore and fairy tales. They cannot be used to substantiate the presence of a demonic being.

The “devil” there is his personal struggle whether to adopt the Jewish ways or his Father’s way.

Turning stone into bread is a temptation to use the Law to please God.

The mountain Satan took Jesus to was Jerusalem. It was an offering to make him the high priest. The king of the Jewish world.

There is a very interesting documentary about a group of priests who go to the same desert to fast and be tempted by the devil.

It’s a program hosted by Morgan Freeman. In search of God. Season 3.

The conclusion of that documentary was that the “devil” is in our hearts. Not out there in the desert.
